Official Stanford SCEA 2017 Applicants' Discussion Thread

@kimchee1212: So should we just join the group with our regular emails? Or wait until we have our Stanford ones?

We don’t have email access though…

The 'other" is something@something.stanford.edu

like engineering or something

Ahh, I didn’t realize it was just for subdomains.

@bleach
He’s not arrogant at all lol, just telling it as it is. Hell, anger is the most logical feeling to be experiencing right now. Anger at Stanford! When it comes down to that low acceptance rate, it really does become luck of the draw. They ‘think’ they see something in certain candidates, and they happen to overlook others that may have actually been the better fit or more qualified. But you’re right about one thing, we’ll get accepted somewhere great and will make Stanford regret their decision. Guarantee it :D

@coffeeandtea: Do they ask for an e-mail or something? Usually you just press “Join Group” and they cross check your name with the list of admitted students and approve your request.

Yeah, they require a stanford.edu email to join the group!

^yeah. And the only options for suffixes are @stanford.edu or @department.stanford.edu

EDIT: whoops someone got there first

I repeat, because people probably missed it: We have a facebook group going, currently 18 strong =P Message me if admitted for the link.

@Angel
Have fun at Stanford. I like your style

@norwhale @coffee @stressed @everyone else
I guess you guys will have to survive without me. Ever get overwhelmed and that cali weed aint doing it for you, I’ll give you a premium discount on some good dope. Honor my memory. Honor it.

That is really weird. They’ll probably fix that soon–you guys shouldn’t have your e-mails until you commit, and the group is open to all admits. Just give it a few days :stuck_out_tongue:
The FB group is fun and addicting hehe.

stressesdaisin will join in the morning. My phone for some reason won’t open facebook. Anyone planning on taking a gap year?

bleach, I really, really want to take a gap year. However, my sister is a sophomore in college right now, meaning my aid package will substantially reduce when she graduates in 2 years. As much as I want to take a gap year, I’m not sure if my family will be able to justify paying higher tuition for three years rather than two. So, I’m in the maybe phase right now…we’ll see :)

Oh shucks financial problems are always sticky. I’m in a similar situation because my brother will finish school in two years after doing his masters. But then again I think the overall tuition paid per year will fall with one kid out of school.

Given the reality of college applications these days, I think it is only the admitted students who should be shocked. There are nearly 25,000 public high schools in the US, plus thousands of private high schools. Then there’s the overseas applicants. In this context grades/rank and test scores could never make someone a shoo in for admission. Once you go beyond those two factors, admission is impossible to predict because it comes down to how the AdCom decides it wants to shape its class.

SocalPapa, I am going to have to kindly disagree, to a point.

While I agree that grades and test scores would never make a shooin, 11.88% is still a decent percentage, and there ARE those applicants who are a cut above the rest. (No, I do not think I’m one of them =P )

I refer to those who do such things as RSI and TASP while maintaining strong grades, test scores, and ECs, athletic recruits of Andrew Luck’s caliber, and anybody who has ever attended an International Olympiad (or, in this one kid I know’s case… multiple. He was also the world’s best pianist under 17 and now dual enrolls, I hear (not sure how this is even possible so this may not be reliable) at Harvard and Julliard…)

Point is, there ARE the shooins. Just not us.

(now cue bitter IMO and RSI participant coming on CC to complain about how he got rejected…)

deferred poooooop

Congratulations to those who were accepted!! Ya’ll are awesome

for those of you asking for stats, I was just admitted with a 2190 sat, 4.33 gpa (6 aps with 4 more this year, all 5s so far), national merit semifinalist, sat2: 800 molecular bio, 790 chem, 780 math 2, 770 us history. My extracurriculars are nothing amazing–3 year varsity athlete, club volleyball player since 6th grade, national charity league, a couple interesting internships I guess–children’s hospital lab and a modeling agency. I know I was academically qualified, but so are tons of people who get rejected, and I didn’t think I was interesting enough to get in! Totally thought I was getting rejected and had a major freak out. Especially bc I’ve lived a privileged life with no significant struggles (if this sounds like you, I’m evidence that you can still get in without overcoming hardships and stuff!). I wasn’t particularly impressed by my essays, but I was super honest and authentic in them.

^ and no legacies or athletics or anything!

Congratulations Catillac! :slight_smile: Stanford Adcom saw something awesome in you, then.

My application sounds a little bit like yours, though I’m deferred!

Thanks aerygold! Good luck in the rd round and with your other apps!
