Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] Common App Main: 9 about my love for running, my injury that ended my career, subsequent efforts to start a 5k race in my community (didn’t come to fruition, but I spent a good 90-100hrs on it). it was really good, I had teachers, friends, family look over it, and I spent a lot of time on it overall.[/li][] EC Short Answer: 9 It was about MUN and how I’ve become a more charismatic and extroverted person through it. Most thought it was cute.
[] “Profile” questions: 10 <– because they were me. I wrote casually and honestly.
[] Intellectual Vitality Essay: 10 It’s about what excites me the most. I actually had fun writing this. It’s profuse with excitement, humor, and genuine sentiments.
[] Letter to Roommate Essay: 10 Super fun writing. Humorous first half, frank but lighthearted second half. I used all caps, slang grammar/punctuation, even *asterisks for emphasis/action in certain places. Definitely included personality. I also mentioned the word “atheism” here (i’m not religious), but it wasn’t off-putting past the simple stigma of the word.
[] Why is Stanford a Good Choice for You Essay: 8 Really good, as all were; I spent much time on them. buttt… idk this one was a bit forced. Still me though, so it was great, just not amazing.

[] Additional Rec: Research mentor. Pretty great, read it.

[] State (if domestic applicant): TN
[] School Type: Public

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I helped start/run a science camp for children last summer; I *did do research, but not on a siemens/intel level… inb4 those aren’t hooks[/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essentially perfect scores around the board, clear passion for running, solid EC’s with regional awards and leadership, great essays, the science camp
[] Weaknesses: No distinctions above state level (other than NMF)
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: ^weaknesses. but more so everyone else’s awesomenesses.
[] Where else have you been accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted: Vanderbilt (CV scholarship merit full-tuition), Emory (Scholar Semifinalist, $13k/yr), Rochester (in contention for full-tuition scholarship). Rejected: MIT, WashU
[li] What would you have done differently?: won more stuff, not gotten injured. idk. I feel perfectly confident with myself; the fact that there are many genuinely amazing people out there doesn’t make me feel any worse about myself[/ul]
[/li]
Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: The waitlisting honestly gave me a sigh of relief, after being rejected at MIT. This is the first super crazy college I’ve gotten good(-ish) news from. The fact that Stanford’s waitlist+acceptance pool (~3500) is smaller than WashU’s acceptance pool (~5000) pool alone (along with Stanford’s higher selectivity and 5k more applicants, etc.) gives me a nice feeling.
Briefly explain why you applied to Stanford (This may very roughly show who really had an interest and if there is some correlation with acceptance): California. One of the most intelligent assortment of kids, with a side of sociability/coolness. Silicon Valley. Science. Sports + Warm weather. Snowboarding close by. Everything is amazing, really. As far as demonstrated interest, I went to that five-college info session of Stanford, Harvard, Duke, Penn, Georgetown and talked to the Stanford dude, gave him my name.

Now to hear back from Duke, Yale, Princeton, and Harvard tomorrow! AH! congrats to the acceptances as well as the waitlisted, and I hope everyone else finds good news elsewhere!

I already received my Early Approval letter a few months ago, but I wanted to wait until everyone’s decisions came out before posting this. Here you go!

Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: Earlier in the year after I had submitted my Stanford application, I was already feeling certain of my rejection from Stanford, as I had felt that I had not spent enough time on my application. Then, on one rainy Friday–I will never forget that day–my dad handed me a thin envelope from Stanford University. Thinking it was a rejection letter, I was really shocked to find out that Stanford had actually sent me an Early Approval letter of my admission to Stanford! I was crying and wailing hysterically out of joy for almost half an hour after I had received this unexpected blessing.

I just want to say I am very humbled and honored to have been one of the 100 or so people who received this likely letter. Never in a million years would I expect to be within this small percentage of students–even moreso when I know that the people I’m competing with are USABO/USAMO/2400SAT applicants! I feel nothing but deep bliss and gratitude.

My advice to future applicants is: no matter what other people say, no matter if the odds seem to be against you… REACH FOR YOUR DREAMS AND APPLY ANYWAY! You never know what might happen! :D

Briefly explain why you applied to Stanford (This may very roughly show who really had an interest and if there is some correlation with acceptance): I applied to Stanford because of its unparalleled academics, as well as the wonderful people that make up this university!

General Comments: I’m in COMPLETE SHOCK!

Silverturtle-
I’m an adult, and actually first became acquainted with you through a lengthy argument over the grnaularity of SAT scores. Since that time I’ve re-read data, and had some time to reconsider my opinion and have moved a bit more in your direction.

That said, since that time I’ve read several of your posts and you really come across as a mature, decent fellow, with a very strong intellect. I’m sure your SAT/admissions manual was a great help to many parents and students. I know you already have some very elite likely letters, nevertheless I’m sure this result must sting a little. I suspect you will receive even more pleasant news this week, but even if not you have already achieved a good deal of success this cycle.

If anything, you are additional proof (as if we needed it) of the unpredictable nature of these decisions. Who really knows all the factors that go into these choices? Good luck this week and in the future.

Edit: I’m not familiar with all the other young people on here, but accepted or not, I’m sure similar things could be written about most of them.

Decision: Rejected
