Writing:[ul]
NOTE: I am not going to rate my own essays. I’ll just post what I wrote about and leave that up to you to decide.
    []Essays (Include Subjects):
[li]Common App Main: I answered the “Significant Experience” prompt. This was based on a triggering experience I had in 3rd grade when I studied abroad for a year and learned French at a public elementary school in Montreal, causing my subsequent love for languages. [/li][]EC Short Answer: This was essentially a short blurb about what I do with my knowledge of multiple languages (translating, serving as a teaching assistant, etc.) and what language means to me. Reading it again, I feel like I really succeeded in communicating how strongly I felt about it.
[]Intellectual Vitality: I discussed the fact that I am a synesthete (see: [Synesthesia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Synesthesia - Wikipedia)), meaning I make mental links between sounds, colors, words, ideas, and images (e.g. the word “Thursday”, when spoken aloud, sounds like a greenish blend to me). I talked about how this impacts the way I view the world, as well as how I learn things.
[]Roommate: Here I revealed a lot of random, yet interesting stuff about myself (talked about how I like foreign language films, decorating my room with postcards from places I’ve traveled to, late night chats, pizza crusts, and am very ticklish). The theme was the meaning of the word “together” and how this word would relate to my relationship with my future roommate.
[]Why Stanford: Somewhat generic description of Stanford’s location in the American West and the historical implications of that idea (newness, discovery, adventure), as well as how I would match up personally to that creative/inventive spirit.
[]Other: Nothing else that was noteworthy.

[]Teacher Recommendations: Waived right to view
[]Counselor Rec: Waived right to view
[]Interview: N/A
[]Art Supplement: N/A
Other:

[]State (if domestic applicant): California (lived in Michigan during junior year and Singapore during underclassman years)
[]School Type: Small Private

Reflection:

[ul]
[]Strengths: Standardized test scores, somewhat consistent EC’s in spite of moving, essays, multilingualism, significant international experience (lived in 3 countries and traveled to over 15 others in Asia, Europe, North America, and the Middle East), evidence of overcoming hardships, uniqueness (?)
[]Weaknesses: Very competitive demographic (Asian female applying from southern California), grades
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: It could have been anything, honestly…
[]What would you have done differently? I’m not on the admissions committee, so I don’t know. Best of luck to all of you who didn’t get accepted either; I’m sure you’ll all end up at a wonderful college.
[/ul]

Decision: Accepted

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]

[] Summer Activities: International Institute for Young Musicians in 2007 and 2008. Exploration Program in 2008. Aspen International Music Festival and School in 2009. Summer Internship and Online AP Physics B Course in 2010.
[] Essays: Common App Short: About Academic Team, I thought it was nice.
Common App Long: About Piano and how I learned from criticism, I felt this was one of my strongest because it really showed my passion.
Stanford Supplement: Intellectual Vitality: Thinking about who I am and my place in the world. Not the usual subject, but that’s what makes it special =)
Roommate: Definitely one of my favorites. Talked about my Asian stereotypes and how they don’t all fit me. Had a LOT of humor and tongue-and-cheek language.
Why Stanford: I think this one stood out. Didn’t talk about anything Stanford specific. I was honest and told them that I just felt it was right for me and that I really wanted to go but had no logical explanation why.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I loved my math teacher… and she loved our class xD I’m assuming this one was great. Other was my 9th grade English teacher but also academic team coach. Knows me really well and knows about my dedication and determination.
[] Counselor Rec: Our school has a counselor specifically for IB kids. She knows me really well as a result and, I think/hope, likes me. I’d say this was great.

[] Strengths: Music!!!
[] Weaknesses: I don’t feel like I’ve really done anything significant academically in terms of awards or activities (build a robot, invent something for science fair, and other super cool stuff like that)
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Music and my essays. My scores are maybe average for Stanford and my standardized tests are only mediocre. I found my essays to really show a side of me that diverges from my accomplishments and achievements. I’m ridiculously excited right now though… even though it’s 1 in the morning. xD[/li][/ul]General Comments: Congrats to all who were also accepted. Looking forward to meeting you come Fall of 2011. I talked about two professors in the Stanford Classics dept in particular, and how the profs were my true reason for applying, beyond those exemplary but generic ECs offered on campus.

[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: It was the work of God. There is no other explanation.[/li][/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to all those accepted! I am sooo excited to meet you guys! I’m honored to be able to work with such phenomenal individuals like you. For those who didn’t get in, don’t give up!!! You’ll find that the school that accepts you is the one that truly recognizes and values your talents and passions.

^^mantoss, I smell a ■■■■■. And if I’m correct, it’s pathetic to think about what might have motivated you to post in such a way. Let me guess: you go by a different screen name and you were rejected … and your unbecoming prejudices prevent you from owning your own rejection. In your mind, some “undeserving” URM took “your” spot, right? If my hunch is correct, you certainly don’t belong at Stanford, and I’m glad you were rejected.

(Pardon my interruption of this otherwise helpful thread.)

@bonkeee1323: wait, you “made the most out of what [you] had to work with in an extremely poor, rural town” and your income bracket is $160,000/year?

[/ul]Reflection[ul]

[] Weaknesses: Relatively low SAT I score for Asian applicant, stereotypical extra-curricular?
[li] Why you think you were accepted: Although my extracurriculars and academic pursuits seem similar to most other Asian applicants, I believe i’ve set myself apart from others in my essays by stating why I am the way I am and exactly what drives me. Unique background, insightful risky essays?[/li][/ul][ b]General Comments:** My advice to anyone who wants to get in would be strive to break your limits every time you come to a stumbling block. If you really want to do something, then go do it now, don’t just say “Oh i’ll do that later”. As for the essay, read lots and lots and lots of essays online, preferably help others proofread their’s, after you’ve seen lots of them, you’ll start to understand the purpose and execution of a well written essay. When your writing your own, don’t doubt yourself, and remember editors are there to make suggestions, not to write your essays for you. (That’ll only apply if you understand what you’re doing, which is why I would recommend reading and proofing college essays online starting now)

Stanford was my dream school even before coming to America. Can’t wait to meet all of the folks in the class of 2015!

CC has been such a vent for my college obsession and I decided to do my bit and contribute. Congratulations and commiserations all around…

Yeah, people need to get on the forum.

Um, for the record, I didn’t lie on my application, if that’s what you’re suggesting. I never suggested that any of my awards were ‘professional’ either. In retrospect, maybe that specific award you pointed out wouldn’t be classified as a “major award”, but it was still something I indicated on my app.
