[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: essays, test scores, extracurriculars, letters of recommendation
[] Weaknesses: grades
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: look @ strengths[/li][/ul]General Comments: Still can’t believe it.

I’m going to do the same.

Well, with the exception of that one, most of the others were actually quite significant. Some are just not very well-known in the U.S.

Yes, I did. At any rate, they’re better than listing “School Honor Roll”. :stuck_out_tongue:

(P.S. I’ve actually only studied German for 2 years total myself. It’s been sort of an on-and-off thing, so even though I technically started in 9th grade, there were quite a few gaps in between due to moving and other circumstances)

@jeskohanadu: Why do you insist on badgering fledgling with this? Significance of an award isn’t based on one person’s opinions (yours). What’s your point here? SHE thought they were important to her, so she put them down. Why is that wrong? If they shaped her, if they were a part of her, then what was wrong with that? I’m putting down a couple “awards” that I received at a summer camp for certain qualities I demonstrated when I was a counselor. That camp isn’t well known by the AdCom. Maybe it’s wrong in your consideration, but I’m doing it anyway. I feel like they’re a part of me, they contributed to who I am today, and I believe that they’re what schools want to hear about. They don’t necessarily want the super intellectual who only has Olympiad awards and other intellectual awards (though they aren’t “bad”). Schools, especially Stanford, want to know about what your life has been like, what you’ve done, how you’ve worked in society. Heck, I’m even going to put another award in for being somewhere in the top 10 (won’t say what place) but not top 3 of a competition. I don’t care about the number, that’s why I’m putting it there. I’m using it to show what I as a person have experienced. So do us all a favor and stop trying to act like you’re the person who knows the ins and outs of filling out an application in such a way that demonstrates you’re well rounded.

'kay thanks bye.

@ Sleeet: Thanks for the support. And you’re right; I did have to practice/study a lot to get some of those awards, so they weren’t blow-offs, at least not for me. To jeskohanadu, you might just happen to be a lot smarter or more talented than I am (which is entirely possible), and that may be why you don’t think those awards mean anything, but please be a little more considerate of others who may not have the same natural gifts or resources as you. Thanks :)

^Sleeet, I was going to chime in along the same exact lines. I completely agree.

@jeskohanadu: Did you even apply to Stanford? I don’t see any posts from you on the Stanford forum, other than these to harrass fledgling. I don’t understand that. Did you come over here just to her a hard time? If so, that’s just plain weird.

And I see nothing wrong with the awards you listed, fledgling. You did just fine. You were real and genuine and forthright. Good for you. That’s what I happen to believe most schools are looking for. You’ll find your place at a good one, I’m sure!

Couldn’t agree more. What jeskohanadu is doing is really unnecessary and uncalled for.

fledgling, your awards are significant.ABRSM,for one,has an excellent reputation, plus the fact that you went up to grade 8 and passed(those exams can be nervewrecking) is worthy of mention on your college app.Go ahead and list it(even the spelling bee championship lol).It makes you UNIQUE!

Pick one:

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Band; I’m a very good clarinet player, though not a prodigy. (squad leader and section leader); NHS; French Club (Treasurer); French NHS (President); Environmental Club; Volunteering at animal shelters (300+ hours, mostly after 9th and 10th grade, none this summer); HOSA (reporter; organized an awareness week/fundraiser which I talked about in the big essay)

[] Counselor Rec: Probably very good.
[] Additional Rec: Band Director gave me a formula recommendation with my arts supplement.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Grades, scores, EC
[] Weaknesses: essays, ethnicity, lack of something outstanding I’ve done
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Luck probably. I’m so inferior to some rejects.
[/li][/ul]General Comments:
I’m SOO excited to go to Stanford but I’m kind of guilty because I feel like I haven’t done as much as some rejects… I hope I’m not the least-accomplished one there… but of course I’m still going XD

Remember to remove the spaces.

Decision: Deferred

**Teacher Recommendation: **Probably excellent; My math teacher has taught me for 2 years and is teaching my 2 classes this year, and is a close family friend. My Environmental Science teacher from last year probably wrote a very good one as well, since her mom is actually very involved in Therapeutic Riding too and she grew up on a horse farm and shares my passion
Counselor Rec: My assistant principal wrote this instead; I read it and it was very good, a little redundant because it restated my activities but very positive
Additional Rec: No
Interview: Yes; went well

Other
Applied for Financial Aid?: no
Intended Major: Undecided
State (if domestic applicant): Maryland
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: $100,000 +
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): legacy through father and uncle was a Rhodes Scholar there (don’t know if that makes any different haha), brother goes there

Reflection
Strengths: Transcript, volunteering, essays
Weaknesses: Test scores, have gotten suspended (for pregaming a football game 2 years ago; needless to say THAT was a mistake! )
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Who knows? I think I was deferred instead of flat out rejected so as not to anger their alum too much

General Comments:
I’m really, really disappointed. I’ve wanted to go to Stanford since 5th grade (which of course, I know so many others have). I’m really beating myself up over this. I’m thrilled to still have a chance, but I can’t help but feel a little let down, and I’m not too optimistic about getting in. I’m really hurt right now but I know it’ll all work out eventually.

Country (if international applicant):

Reflection
Strengths: a lot of extracurricular leadership, essays were really strong, sister at stanford, native american, stanford summer college
Weaknesses: bad sat scores and low gpa
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: my grades aren’t up to par with stanford’s expectations
General Comments:
This is really my dream school. I am pretty happy about this because I was expecting to get rejected because of my low gpa and sat scores. Native American and multiculturalism really helped me. Having a successful sibling was important as well. Overall, I hope I will get in eventually.

This is when it’s a good idea to lie. Different (but similar) state is a start, then move to statistically insignificant variances in SAT scores, listing science olympiad instead of math team, listing tennis instead of golf or track instead of football, AP Chem instead of AP Physics C, etc. If you’re referring to a really big thing that is crucial to your app but would easily give you away (like IMO) then yeah lying is not a good idea.

I hope you guys don’t criticize me for “damaging” the integrity of the thread, but it makes sense to at least change the state (except California) and a couple other virtually insignificant factors. Being exposed on here is terrible, trust me (I was because of a thread like this). And a lot of future applicants look on here to see trends. You need lots of people, not perfect details on virtually insignificant factors, to see trends.

ACCEPTED!!! YAY! Found out last Friday evening via email. Almost fell off my chair.

Why Stanford- pretty generic, did quite a bit of research since I have been in love with this school for quite a while
Roommate- probably my best essay out of the 3, very casual and humorous, a lot of puns but it also showed a lot of my other interests that could not be seen anywhere else on the app
Intellectual vitality- wrote about how “group think” slows societal progress, nothing spectacular
[] Teacher Recommendation: waived right so I didn’t see. I did hear part of one though because it was part of a ceremony for an award I won, very specific and in depth, talked about my leadership role in the classroom as well as my personality. Other one is probably good but not amazing.
