Official Summer Olympics 2024 Thread - LIVE SPOILERS!

Opening ceremonies Friday I believe! Often a sport or two starts before the actual opening.

Curious to hear who from CC may be going. Would love to hear ANY details of your experience. Where you’re staying, what you are seeing, experiences.

Comments on all events! Hopefully this can be a positive thread for the most part!

I am so thankful we went to Paris last summer! Our taxi driver told us it was a good thing we weren’t going to the Olympics, ha. He expected a real you-know-what show.

When we landed in Paris, I was surprised at the poor condition of the runway. It felt like we were landing in a third-world country. And the airport was a chaotic mess when we left.

I am extremely excited as I will be there!

D and I went to Paris in 2019 and had a wonderful time visiting museums and seeing the sights. This time will be all about the Olympics!

Our hotel is on the Rue de Rivoli, in the 1st, so right in the thick of things, for better or for worse. We arrive Thursday after an overnight flight.

I love Paris and the Olympics, so this is a dream come true for me.

I know you mentioned going. I hope we can hear from you from time to time during or after as one our CC “feet on the ground”! Very very cool. Bring us all back a tshirt.

This is definitely a once in a lifetime trip. I remember the Montreal Olympics and wanting to go so badly - never did I think it would actually happen. We’ll see gymnastics, swimming, beach volleyball and rugby. Then sadly we’ll have to return home.

We have tickets for the opening ceremony and are sitting on one of the bridges, which will be interesting. When D initially got tickets they were standing, so when there was a new release of tickets, we upgraded.

I hope everything on your trip goes smoothly for you. I am very jealous, but you so deserve this break from life!

We went to some of the Montreal Olympics - no idea why we decided to visit family there during that exact time but we were able to score a couple ticket events. I was pretty young though.

Hope travel on the “going” side especially goes well. :airplane:

What does everyone thing of LeBron being the flag carrier for :us: ? We had a big family discussion about it today. I say he was voted in by his peers so that’s good enough for me. He’s done a lot with his success for others - he’ll hold it proudly.

I wonder how flag carrier will work since the Opening Ceremonies will be held on the river. I’m so used to seeing the flag carrier leading the contingent as they walk into the stadium. BTW the Opening Ceremonies will start at 10:30 am on the west coast.

Dumb question: is Olympic basketball like soccer, where the teams play in groups, followed by a knock-out round? I’ve never really paid attention to Olympic BB before.

Favorite Olympic watch party activities in our household include:

  1. Competition to invent the best new Olympic sport combining 2 or more previous sports. Last cycle, I was the winner with Equestrian Pole Vaulting. It is just like regular pole vaulting except the run-up phase is done on horseback.
  2. Cold War gymnastics coach. Who has the best accent? Who can deliver the most outrageous “motivating” insult?

It’s his 4th Olympics and it was a vote by his fellow athletes. No issue.

I will be watching some of the soccer and all the equestrian events. Equestrian is the only Olympic sport where men and women compete in the same division (ie, together).

LeBron is definitely worthy of being the flag bearer in what is most likely his last Olympics. I also feel that his participation spurred more NBA players to join team USA. Which they are going to need every last star to beat the world competition.

I could also see Katie Ledecky. Swimming is only the first week of the Olympics. Or Simone Biles. Has either carried the flag before?

Simone Biles was the flag bearer for the closing ceremony in Rio

We’ll be watching both swimming and gymnastics. Also, our family is probably one of the few who will watch rhythmic gymnastics.

I just got an email from The Washington Post that they are doing a daily Olympics newsletter with medal counts, etc. I bet you could Google and sign up.
