***Official Thread for 2015 BSMD applicants***

I was accepted into some amazing BSMD programs and I will be forever grateful for the advice and support of so many on this thread including @texaspg @lax1997 @jb9832
@chihuahua1 @Dildil @Me4college @ignitescience @GoodDoctor @lifeishard there are many more people too but I can’t quite remember their usernames right now. Thank you!

@Laidback :: I do not have any specific information , but i have heard about financial issues which led to re-org 2years back. The motto for the re-org was to make Rutgers from “Good to Great”. University hospital being funded by state is not such a bad thing. The hospital caters to large number of patients who cannot pay and I would think in future NJ state will continue fund it no matter what as impacts a large # of voters . This means NJMS will continue to benefit from clinical experience gained with exposure to a large pool of patients. With Cancer institute and RWJ under Rutgers belt I am expecting Rutgers to be able to give more research and clinical opportunities in future.

There is a common theme I heard at all the three places my S was fortunate enough to get selected that BS/MD students always formed the cream of the medical students and got top residency positions, so I would not be too much worried about competition with SGU or students from any other medical college.

@randombowss, Yes

my D was accepted 5 years ago to TCNJ. It is a great school 15 minutes from Princeton in the country. They have 2 electron microscopes that bio majors can use which is rare for a school,of its size. They have small classes and very good instructors. It is a gem in New Jersey. You can have lunch in Princeton which is stunning. Most of the other combined schools in Jersey and Pa are more urban schools. It used to be that only 1 or 2 kids were from any high school were accepted since it is our public Swarthmore.

anyone here apply to howard?

@Raycmr: I am assuming your D is at NJMS ? Does she like NJMS and she thinks it prepared her for step 1 ?? How about living situation near NJMS? Any problems with administration or lack of research or other opportunities there?? Thanks.

Is there a reason to be wary of Hofstra as it is a new medical school and is still not ranked?

I am puzzling my S may want Washington and Jefferson College BAMD program with Temple Med school versus going to Rice University or UC Berkeley. W & J pays $25000 scholarship while others have no FA. Any comment on this??

@llojps As with any new medical school, there are unknowns - they were pretty vague about their results from their first match class so I can’t comment on that but just be aware that you might be selling yourself short.

@benina that’s a good choice as long as your S thinks he can have a fulfilling experience at Washington & Jefferson college. If going to a small, less-known undergrad is a tough pill to swallow for your him, the guarantee isn’t necessarily worth it. I guess you also have to consider how important finances are for your family.

@llojps Hofstra is ranked decently in http://medical-schools.startclass.com/

@benina
If you apply out of Temple Med, you lose your guaranteed seat there. Just something to consider.

Daughter has been accepted to Case with $32,500 scholarship and UMKC (out of state). She is trying to decide between these two programs and Yale. Please share your thoughts. Thank you!

Did Yale give you any money? If not Case is a pretty good school to attend if your D is not keen on the combined program.

UMKC is rather intense and not that quality. Makes sense if you live in Missouri though…

@Iz48880 Your D is obviously very talented and I don’t think UMKC would be the recommended choice because the medical school’s quality could very much close some doors for residency. As for the other two, assuming she’s set on medicine, Yale seems like it would offer the most enriching experience but it would be understandable why any family would be hesitant to spend that kind of money for 4 years so Case is worth considering. If there’s any doubt about medicine, Yale would be the better option.

Has anyone heard anything from Drew/NJMS?

got into UMKC , UIC GPPA and Berkeley. It is hard decide for us.

@popsys I would be hesitant to recommend UMKC, as it closes doors quite early and Berkley would be a fairly challenging environment for pre-med. UIC GPPA would be the best choice, assuming they’re 100% set on medicine, because the medical school is fairly good (impressed by their match list) and applying out is even an option. I guess the only drawback is undergrad quality but not having to stress about medical school admissions will go a long way in making undergrad more enjoyable.

is there a Facebook group for the incoming tcnj/njms class? or can somebody make one?

@popsys, I don’t know about Berkeley as it all depends on your expectations of UG education. Berkeley would be a better choice if you want to complete your UG in a reputable university. Between UMKC and UIC GPPA, of course UIC GPPA which is in state tuition and a lot better medical school.
