Official thread october sat 2013 test

Does anybody remember the other answer choices for the Einstein quote question, to which the answer was overstated?

Haha CDA dude you misinterpreted by rhetoric about CB excluding that question; it’s cool though man.

Yeah 33 the answer to number 7 on the grid-in sect. 33 is BOTH one more than a multiple of 8 but is not the square of any integer thus it is the valid counter example.

no, i’ve seen a test with a cancelled question before. the max score is reduced by 1 and no one gets credit for it.

ah, jumped into the thread late jlee… didn’t see the context.

einstein question about overstated, i remember the only other answer choice that wasn’t totally ridiculous was “outdated.”

Yeah I think the most recent example for a question in math being dropped and such came in either 2010 or 2011. I just saw it tonight (that stat not the question that was dropped). I think -1 today will be a 770 or 780, 790 is rather unlikely…unfortunately 760 would be more probable than the 790 for -1, agreed?

I think another choice for the einstein question was “cliche.” I’m guessing, although I have no memory of what I put, that I chose overstated.

CDA, what do you think of the CR question about the best definition for the word “homely?”

domestic or simple

for the may test, -1 was 770, for june -1 was 790.

this one feels like a -1=770 to be honest.

houston, this is another one that had me thinking for a while. i went with simple. domestic is very tempting since we normally associate these kinds of sayings with old wives tales, but the only context was about uneducated country folk. there was no direct reference to anything related to domestic(related to the home), so simple is the best choice here as it directly relates to uneducated. they were trying to trap you with your pre-existing knowledge.

Does anyone have a copy of the June test (presumably someone does because of the Q-and-A service)?

QAS only releases in Jan/May(sat)/May(sun)/Oct

Go figure.

So quick change of tests, you think I could get away with using my TI89 on the ACT? The proctors from what I’ve heard don’t know what the calcs you can’t use look like. The CAS saves so much time. Thoughts?

AND the 89, unlike the Inspire, looks like a black 84-SE which is a legal ACT calc…

i’m old school and don’t use a graphing calculator so not sure. but from what i’ve observed they just do a scan of the calculators. and isn’t the Ti89 just a regular graphing calculator?I thought they were allowed since most students seem to be using graphing calculators.

worst case, they say it’s not allowed and you can’t use it right? just take 2 calculators in case they prohibit you from using the one you want.

CDA you can’t use the 89 and CAS versions of the Inspire because of the functionality due to the CAS. It does everything for you as long as you know how to use it. I’m the only person I know who has an 89. Since they’re so rare I don’t think their guards would be up. Or I could show them a different calc when I walk in and have the 89 in my bag.

but honestly, you don’t need a powerful calculator for the act right? the harder problems are usually conceptual (in my opinion since i suck at number theory)

my sat proctors have never done a thorough check for calculators, and i’ve certainly never been checked at the door.
for the act, the proctor seemed a bit more strict and walked around inspecting them. i wouldn’t recommend trying to sneak it in. show it openly when they visually check it. if they don’t say anything then you shouldn’t get in any trouble if they do discover it later. but if you sneak it in, you’re asking for trouble.

besides, if you look at the admissions data, top colleges place less weight on 800 math than on reading and writing. some of the top 10 publish their class score data and acceptance rates for kids with 800 on math are much lower than those who get 800 on reading/writing. focus on reading/writing!

There was already consensus on the answers:
mundane…extraordinary
homely = simple

I’m not sure if there was a consensus for indignant vs. belligerent, but I chose indignant and ended up fairly sure that the man wasn’t belligerent. I don’t remember any satanic slurs lol. The man’s speech wasn’t hostile and didn’t alienate anyone. It was more of an emphatic and annoyed speech than a brashly belligerent one, for certain.

There’s still a degree of calculations and the 89 saves time all around, any CAS calc would. Number theory and ACT lol. Maybe pre-elementary NT at best

Haha yeah CDA I’m pretty sure you could straight up masturbate and the SAT proctor wouldn’t care

number theory is my bane…
to be fair, i don’t do any studying for math… i 'm relying on stuff i learned a long long long time ago.
