Official UC Berkeley 2015 Transfer Thread

@merpcollegelife
Hey sorry for the late reply, had to stare at the admitted screen for a couple hours to make sure i wasnt dreaming.

Here are my stats:

GPA: 3.911
Major GPA: 4.0
School: 4 year private school
Major: Economics
Prereqs: all done
Accepted: UCB UCLA UCSB
Denied: None
Pending: UW
Applied: UCB UCLA UCSB UW

@transferjay Yeah, I sort of feel that way. But at the same time, I also know that I have worked myself to the bone for the last two years, and 4 months in Berkeley to relax and work and save some money and get the lay of the land sort of seems… nice? Of course I’m also going to struggle with that feeling of falling behind my peers but… I don’t know. I’m trying not to think of it as negatively postponing one sought after experience but just gaining a different experience before I finally get to claim my status as a UC Berkeley student that I’ve worked so hard for. Hope that helps, even if you don’t end up at Cal!

Does anyone know the rationale for sticking some students in spring? I assume they’re calculating students graduating in Dec, but I wonder how they’re choosing who gets deferred.

@lindyk8 I’m assuming we’re promising applicants that they don’t want to reject but have a lot of other shining applicants who they want to offer immediate admission to… Just speculation. We’re you also admitted for spring? What is your outlook right now?

Accepted for Spring 2016
Major: Sociology
GPA: 3.80
Pre-reqs: 2/3, received one A and one B.
IGETC: IP, done this spring
ECs: Youth ministry, football and basketball assistant coaching, and some very minor volunteering.
PS: I’d rate 8-8.5/10
Applied: UCSB/SD/LA, Irvine, and Berkeley.
Accepted: ALL

Huge thanks to those who have helped me during the admissions process; and a congratulations to all fellow acceptees!

My idea that they didn’t want to reject promising students but ran out of space because of other applicants who were more competitive or reviewed first(so they wait for graduates to finish) is generally right because I found this online: Every year, UC Berkeley admits students who applied for fall to begin their studies in the spring so we can offer additional spaces to students we know will thrive and contribute to our campus community. Space becomes available on campus every January as a result of students graduating, studying abroad, and taking a semester off. Starting in January as a freshman or being admitted to spring as a transfer in no way reflects on a student’s performance or academic abilities compared to students starting in the fall.

From Berkeley on Spring admits, “TRANSFER STUDENTS: Transfer students should consult their college or department advisers after the spring semester begins to determine their graduation time. Graduation rates for January-entrant transfers vary more than with other groups, although the two-year rates are generally rising slowly.” They also suggest in the time just getting a job , go to community college, etc.

ALSO, my email says that 3200/17200 were accepted for Spring ( 18%), does that mean their acceptance rate for transfer is even higher because they also accepted applicants for fall (out of that same 17K)?

Accepted :D/

Hey guys. I have a question.

I was admitted for fall of 2015 (political economy). I am coming from a oos 4-year university.

I reported that I would have 65 credits by the end of spring 2015, but my college did offer three of the courses (unexpectedly, they canceled with no alternative). The three I am missing are under my major requirements, which UCB would let me use the summer term for. But it also means that I fell short the credit requirement by a few hours (4 or 6 I think).
I have a very good reason for not fulfilling the requirement.

Will my admission be withdrawn?
If so, is there any way I can still make it to Cal?

Admitted

Major: History
GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Yes
Pre-reqs: Missing one
EC: Work (a lot of hours), club president
Applied: UCB, UCD, UCLA
Accepted: UCB, UCD, UCLA

@cardinalzenn do you mean you will have less than 60 units by end of spring? If so, I think your admission will get rescinded. You should try to find anything transferable to cover it. Maybe a PE class?

Is PE transferable?

Yes, you can transfer 4 activity units.

ACCEPTED!

Major: Media Studies

General thoughts: I won’t pretend that I have any universal wisdom to impart, but I will say that I firmly believe that whether or not you got into a particular university does not diminish the value of your accomplishments. Good luck to all future applicants!

Rejected: SDSU, UCD
Advice: They have to turn away thousands of talented and qualified candidates every year, so they accept people with a track record that shows they will finish a demanding course load in a short period of time to make room for new students. STOP taking Bull Sh*t classes and take a full load of hard classes that relate to your major and get all A’s

Accepted!!

For spring :-/

Does anyone know if enough people don’t take up their fall admission, could the spring accepts move to fall instead? I really need to get in for the fall. I’m 24 years old for goodness sake. If anyone has any ideas about this, please send them way my way 8->

Congrats to everyone who got accepted.

And to those who didn’t, you are equally as amazing and should be proud of all your hard work!

I’ll post my stats tomorrow.

More info that might help someone in the future:

I spent 7 semesters with a 3 semester break in between at community college due to military obligations. The break lead to odd conflicts in my original schedule plan. I had to take an extra semester since I wanted to finish the 3 semester physics sequence at my current CC and the first class sequence was only offered in the spring. Thus, the last two years my course load had to dwindle down to 3 classes each semester since I was running out of classes to take and I needed to remain full time for the Pell Grant. My total semester hours that will be completed is 104 (with remedial course work; 82 without). I only had one semester where I had at least 3 major core classes; M.V. Calc, OChem 2, Physics 1, rest of the semesters were either math + chem or math + physics. I also retook English 2 twice; once at a CC in Texas and the other in California. I also took 2 semester of remedial Algebra at the beginning of returning to school and jumped to Calculus the following semester by taking College Algebra and Trigonometry in the summer. I also had to take introductory basic chemistry (high school level not general chemistry) for one semester; I consider it a remedial class since it cannot transfer to my major.
Also, all the extracurricular stuff won’t have an impact if your GPA is not competitive. Your GPA and what you’ve done with your life past high school is what matters. Try to finish everything you can at the CC and use assist.org for your class selection. Most schools would rather take someone with a 3.8 gpa and everything completed than someone with a 4.0 who is missing one or a few courses listed on assist.org (this seems to be the case with UCLA).
