Official UC Berkeley 2015 Transfer Thread

@goldencub, all of her courses fulfill her major requirements. I believe two are actually in Media Studies and one is in Psych. She’s also taking a Japanese anime decal (history of) and an engineering for dummies (no math needed) decal.

@lindyk8 Ah, I forgot that it’s interdisciplinary.

Ooh, they offer “Philosophy in Calvin and Hobbes”, “Dystopian Literature”, etc. I’ll probably take one or two.

I’m a spring admit and the adjustment was easier than I thought. Phil is significantly more difficult though than Econ so more power to you.

What stood out to me was that if your taking any “bottleneck” or “gateway” courses is that you can’t rely on any curve as the perceived curve will change on a weekly basis. I took Stat 21 which is a requirement for Haas and the competition for the grades was cut-throat. The vast majority of the class was hovering around the A/A- range and everyone was hoping that the grade distributions wouldn’t be artificially cut off since there were too many A’s. (It wasn’t but we got a insanely difficult final to lower the average grades instead)

What did you think of your summer class? From my personal experience the summer courses are easier than the regular year courses.

That said, your probably better off with just three classes. It it end up being too easy, just think of it as allocating more time to explore all the organizations on campus. Consider a Berkeley Connect section as they are really good with getting you on the right path for grad / law school and it’s pretty much an automatic letter of rec from a faculty member if you play your cards right.

@SDGoldenBear I won’t be taking any sort of weeder classes, if that’s what you’re suggesting. I’ll move right up to upper div’s.

I think grades aren’t generally curved in my major, but I could be wrong. If they are, then it’s a light to make the averages fairly normal.

I’m absolutely positive that the summer class was easier than it is during the regular session, as far as grading went. The exams weren’t bad at all (they gave a ton of partial credit, too). Learning three languages of logic and their respective approaches in 6 weeks was extremely difficult, though. However, if I had the time that I would have had during the regular semester, I probably would have done just as well, despite the grading. I hear that’s one of the more difficult Philos classes, too. While the class is apparently supposed to be a GPA booster, learning first-order logic thoroughly in 6 weeks was incredibly difficult. I’m sure the material wouldn’t be as challenging to absorb during the regular semester, but then the grading/prof would have been different. Discussion sections were new (having come from CC), but I found them to be incredibly helpful.

I also attended Philos 25A at the beginning of the semester, but was unable to get in. From what I gathered (friend is taking the class, too) it’s not too difficult. Honestly, the class that I’m taking currently that articulates with it is probably just as difficult.

If I get in/attend, I’ll definitely be taking Philos 100 - Methods, which is, from what I hear, extremely demanding (papers every week, difficult readings). I’ll likely take another logic course, because I loved the one I had. I’m more or less struggling with what to fill the third spot with - another upper div philos class, or perhaps an english literature class? Do you think three courses in my major would be too much for my first semester, provided I only will have 9 upper div classes to fulfill my major reqs once I transfer? Or is it probably a good idea to take something outside of it?

I almost forgot about Berkeley Connect. I’ll definitely do that (I’ve heard great things) along with another decal, probably.

How did you learn this? I really hope it is true. My son is taking two math classes at our community college (linear algebra and differential equations) which are not articulated with Berkeley. The closest college with an agreement is an hour commute from our home. He wants to transfer to computer science engineering. The lady we talked to over the phone in Berkeley admissions said they would not look at his application unless he retakes the classes. Do we need to talk to someone else? Thank you to anyone who can offer advice.

@suenos53 From what I know UCB wants you to finish all major prep and IGETC before or during your last spring semester prior transfer. If you have not fulfilled those requirements, yes, they will not look at your application. But it all depends, because I KNOW people for a fact that have gotten in and didn’t finish all of their major prep. It’s a shaky situation, but to be safe I would finish all of my major prep before transferring over.

Hi what was your cal level at that time?

@zzzanejuuze Nobody knows what you’re talking about and this thread is a year old.

It was my first time using collegeconfidential, so…
Do u know anything about transfering to UCB with political econ?
