I created my own prompt (like five days to the deadline) and wrote about the end of the world as an intellectual apocalypse. Could have been much better, but the people who read it really liked it so… keeping my fingers crossed!

Hello everyone  just a little anecdote: my history teacher (the coolest teacher ever) is a UChicago undergrad&grad alum and, while we’re studying Chicago in the class, we’re doing a whole section on Hyde Park. How coincidental is that?

Did you get that teacher to write you a letter of recommendation?

@ZombieDante no I didn’t because of many reasons.

 1. I didn’t know it at the time. She only recently revealed this about herself (though I should have expected it, she’s just so cool)

2) I was never an exceptional student in her class. I was good, sure, and I enjoy her class but her recommendation wouldn’t have been as stellar as the ones given by the teachers that I had chosen.

3) the only student in her class who asked for a recommendation (we are 10 in the class) told me that she really wasn’t enthusiastic about writing it, and he’s the brilliant one of the class!

She was, however, happy to talk about the interview process (I had my interview over Skype last week). I think that she’s excited about a student applying to her alma mater (I am the only one).

I didn’t like my interview. It was one of those coffee shop ones. I did not like the atmosphere. The music was so loud every 30 seconds I had to say, “Say that again?” and I wasn’t answering his questions very well apparently, as I’d talk for two minutes and he’d say, “Let me rephrase the question…”

Ugh. I’d much rather have an interview in a totally serious office with textbook questions.

^I am no expert and have no grounding to truly say this but, I have to. “Textbook” is the exact thing UChicago does not want. It’s truly a unique school that forces you to think differently. Maybe the interviewer picked an environment to test you.

But we clearly had differing viewpoints. I kept saying “China is only friends with DPRK because it doesn’t want people flooding China” and he kept saying, “Is that really why?”

He just wanted you to substantiate your assertion, a strong one, clearly. Dont sweat it.

I just think it was the music. It didn’t help that he didn’t have a very loud voice.

Probably. An interview will not be a deciding factor as far as I know. My yale interviewer told him how his interview went awful and how the interviewer told him to not count on an acceptance!

Where else did everyone apply? Any acceptances? U of C your first choice? Why?

@getmorereveggies I actually went kinda app-crazy and applied EVERYWHERE. As in, places I had never heard of simply because I was paranoid (pun intended) of “not getting in”. This ended up amounting to 17 applications (yes, I know), of which I couldn’t care less about 10 of them, somewhat considered 2, and only cared about 5.

Those 5 are:
-University of Michigan–Ann Arbor (ACCEPTED)
-Michigan State University (ACCEPTED)
-University of Chicago (PENDING)
-College of William and Mary (PENDING)
-Yale University (PENDING)

UM was/is my top choice, but if I get into UC, CoWM, or YU…There’s gonna be some serious thinking going on.

What about you??
