Official UChicago Coronavirus Updates

@blondeboynj - hello? Not cool. Get a grip.

@lilchaz IIRC you live south or southwest of Chicago, right? Otherwise we would have offered your D a ride at least part way. My son is also bringing home a valuable musical instrument that was a financial sacrifice for our family (but worth it to support his talent). Cellos can get damaged so easily - you did the right thing. There’s no run on airline seats - most are still traveling for business at this point. The only risk would be if flights are curtailed in any way.

Thanks all! @JBStillFlying yes we are in Arkansas, but thank you for the offer! I am staying on top of the news and watching flights. I do think some sort of domestic shutdown of flights, train and bus travel is coming soon. If that happens before tomorrow, we’ll figure it out.

I’m glad to see that the RAs are getting some sort of salary for the Spring Quarter. My daughter’s RAs have always been wonderful, and are planning some virtual events for the Spring.

Safe and healthy travels to all that are in the midst of getting your kids home!

Spring Quarter delayed by one week. Now it has only 9 weeks.

Happy about the extra time off! My daughter will certainly need it. I also saw that Maroon dollar balances are being carried over to next year, unless you are a graduating senior, then the money will be refunded.

From UChicago College tweet:

As directed by the Governor of Illinois, the University of Chicago will cease dine-in service for all on-campus dining halls and cafes from March 17 through March 30. Food will be provided in take-and-go packaging.

Video just came out today and it is very easy to follow her logic.

First IL-related death; died at UC Medical Center. Not sure whether that automatically means HP campus.

Booth student tested positive. Lived off-campus.

Subject: Case of COVID-19 at the University
Date: March 17, 2020

We write to inform you that today a member of the University of Chicago community tested positive for coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The individual, a student at the Booth School of Business, lives off campus and is receiving treatment.

This is the first confirmed case of COVID-19 involving a member of our campus community. Following protocols established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the University and the University of Chicago Medicine are working with local public health authorities to quickly identify and contact people who may have had close contact with the individual. We will provide guidance and advice as soon as possible to those who have had close contact with the diagnosed individual, ranging from self-monitoring for symptoms (fever, cough, difficulty breathing) to self-isolation at home for 14 days.

We understand this is a difficult time for this student. Of course it will also be concerning to those who may have been in close contact. To the extent possible we ask that you respect their privacy and make sure they have the time and space needed to make a full recovery.

For more information on COVID-19, including precautionary actions you can take, please visit the University’s website here. The University has established a call center for those with COVID-19 questions or concerns, which you can reach by dialing 773-795-5374. You may also email us at coronavirusinfo@uchicago.edu. Students with questions related to their physical health should contact Student Health Services at 773-702-4156; those who need counseling care may call Student Counseling Services at 773-702-9800.

We ask that all members of our community continue to practice social distancing and monitor their health. If you develop a fever (100°F/37.8°C or higher), cough frequently, or have trouble breathing, the CDC provides this guidance, including:
Avoid contact with others.
Seek medical care by calling ahead before you go to your primary caregiver’s office or an emergency room.
Report your symptoms as well as your recent travel history or any exposure to others who may have symptoms.
If you have symptoms of COVID-19, do not stay in your on-campus residence or travel to your hometown without speaking to a medical professional by phone.

Please consult the CDC website for further guidance on how to protect yourself and prevent the spread of COVID-19.

We know this news adds to the concern many people feel about the COVID-19 situation in the U.S. and worldwide. As always, it is vital for our community to support each other, avoid uninformed assumptions or discrimination, and base our actions on the best information and data available. The CDC has provided resources on reducing stigma related to COVID-19. Information on COVID-19 and topics of interest to the University community are archived at coronavirusupdates.uchicago.edu. Further health information is available from UChicago Medicine, CDPH, and the CDC.

has anybody heard of finals being delayed? midway was closed today

I was under the impression that all finals were now being taken online - that is the case for my daughter - so they can be taken anywhere. Her last final, while scheduled for yesterday, “came online” yesterday and the prof gave until Friday end of day to complete/submit. Is that not the case for your student @momo2x2018 ?

has anybody heard of finals being delayed? midway was closed today

@CUandUCmom That is also the case for my S. He is still at school and is due home this weekend, however, lst night I heard some professors were delaying submission of final papers, by up to a week, in order facilitate a speedier departure from campus.
My S was not one of the students whose papers had been delayed, and he is still not ready to leave ie he has not packed bc he’s still working…

I’m having trouble understanding why the Midway is shut down. Is it because groups might gather to conduct a sport / activity? Why would you shut down open spaces?

@kaukauna This is why:

https://techcrunch.com/2020/03/17/faa-temporarily-closes-tower-at-chicagos-midway-airport-after-employees-test-positive-for-covid-19/

FAA likely has to quarantine a whole bunch of air traffic controllers and disinfect the place and bring in a new crew.

Oh! What an idiot I am! I was thinking of the Midway Plaisance! Need to read more slowly and carefully! Thanks for the response 85. I had heard about Midway airport shutting.

Finals have officially been delayed per communication from Provost this morning. (My son is still sticking to the plan of leaving this weekend and will likely finish everything up prior to that, but I’m not sure).

The reasoning for the delay might be that students sticking around might have difficulty getting out of Chicago, so let them get out now and then worry about finals when they arrive home.

Latest from Dean Boyer concerning finals:

March 18:
An update from Dean John W. Boyer || Mar. 18
All undergraduate students who have not yet left campus for Spring Break, and who can return home, are encouraged to do so as soon as feasible.
The College will move online exams from Thursday and Friday of this week (March 19-20) to next Tuesday and Wednesday (March 24-25).
Over the next days, instructors will directly communicate the specific timing of rescheduled exams.

It doesn’t seem there will be any breaks for tuition in the Spring Quarter; that’s too bad, with the stock market and my 529 in the toilet, my anxiety is high…

Are bills out yet?

No. I saw a post on UChicago Mutual Aid; apparently, so rumor has it, Yale (and other schools) is prorating / reimbursing for online classes

I’d be wary of “rumors” - Yale hasn’t posted any such information on the FAQ (although they are prorating for res hall/dining, as are other institutions). Many private universities offer an online option for their curriculum anyway and NONE waive tuition for that. In Yale’s case, the spring schedule hasn’t been impacted w/r/t course times and presumably the same profs are teaching. Not sure exactly where any “discount” would be applicable, although it’s possible that some schools will decide to take a little haircut to account for things like lack of one-on-one office hours or physical lab experience. In UChicago’s case, they’ve been experimenting with flipped courses so this isn’t much different (and UChicago doesn’t discount tuition on those courses). So I’d be skeptical of any rumors of reimbursement coming from elsewhere and it’s probably not realistic to expect UChicago to be offering spring quarter free-of-charge. However, schools might, indeed, offer a new low rate just to keep families happy. I wouldn’t rule that out  The university has been keeping everyone in the loop as decisions are made. Best to wait and see rather than speculate. BTW, EVERYONE’s 529 is in the toilet.
