Official UCLA Appeals for Fall 2010

I just sent in my appeal today. I was waiting on a letter from the chair of the economics department at UCI. I was rejected because the prereq I took at UCI (Econ 25) wouldn’t be accepted in place of Management 30A…Both are introduction to financial accounting courses…

Here is what the Chair of Econ at UCI had to say:

"To Whom It May Concern:
May 2, 2010
This is to certify that Economics 25 and Management 30A are essentially identical courses. The only reason we offer Economics 25 is that the Business School is not able to offer enough spaces in Management 30A to accommodate all of our Business Economics majors. Feel free to contact me if you need additional information.

Sincerely,
David Brownstone Chair and Professor"

I attached 2 different UCI webpages detailing that you can substitute Econ 25 for Management 30A as well as the syllabi for both courses that show that they both use the same textbook. I attached a transcript which shows I got an A+ in Econ 25.

I also mentioned a couple new academic related things that I forgot to mention on my app. At the very end I asked to be at least considered for the economics major (I know this is unorthodox, but given my situation I thought it was a fair request) if they weren’t satisfied with what I had done/proved.

What do you guys think? Is this compelling enough?

Good Luck to Everyone Here :)

@ sandaboy: That explanation about Econ 25 seems perfect! I wish ya luck man!

@Sanda

If you get rejected, it’s not because you didn’t deserve it.

It seems like UCLA did not accept any Econ/BizEcon majors from other UCs that I know of (many of whom got into Berkeley).

You certainly have a competitive GPA, so I am rooting for you. I wouldn’t get your hopes up, however.

damn sandaboy, i wish i had that letter from the econ chair.

nobody responded in time so i just mailed it off with some syllabi and the econ page stating they’re substitutes. shiznit. If you get in lemme know playboy!

I also asked them to consider me for the math/econ major which accepts about 60%+ of transfer students.

seriously, if you get in because of that info and I don’t, I’ll respectfully ask them to see that we’re in the exact same situation. I wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize ur admission if u did get in and i didn’t though.

@Andrew

You need to realize, however, that his GPA is above the average admit GPA, while yours is below. I got rejected with a 3.9, and UCLA’s only reason was “competitive major.”

emilsinclair- what was your gpa for the pre-psych major?

@ Emil

Thanks man for all your support. It seriously means a lot. I thought the letter was pretty powerful as well.

@ Cali

I know what you mean…it does seem like UCLA is against us UC-UC biz econ/econ transfers…and yeah I definitely don’t have my hopes up for my appeal but I know if I didn’t appeal a part of me would always be like “what if?” LOL…Haha and thanks for rooting for me! Imma need all the rooting I can get LOL.

@ andrew

Ya fosho I’ll let you know what goes down. All the best to you!

@ shawnabehrens: My transferrable GPA is a 3.74, and I applied as a pre-psych major. I was initially rejected, but later I was admitted because they had overlooked one of my biology requirements.

@ sandaboy: No problem man! Definitely let me know what happens. I’m pulling for ya, and so is everyone else in this thread! :)

@Cali

Yeah, well my GPA is actually right on the money with the average transfer rate of 3.86 at UCI. But yeah, if you didn’t get in with a 3.90 then my chances are pretty slim.
Their reasoning though was simply that I didn’t do a prereq, which I technically did. So I’m competitive for that major at the very least.

Also I asked them to at least consider me for the Math/Econ major which is not impacted, boasts a 60%+ transfer rate, and has an average admit GPA of like 3.5+

@andrew

I hope it works out for you. I think you’d be a shoe-in if you were considered under Math/Econ (given that you have completed the pre-reqs, of which there are many). I’ve heard it is a pretty tough major though. But, you surely deserve to be admitted to Econ, so let’s hope they consider your appeal. Good luck!

Has anyone received an answer for their appeals yet? I sent mine on April 25, and I called them last Thursday (May 6) and they said that it would take 5-7 days. Yet, I’m still waiting for my answer. Hoping for the best!

@ gsuharli

Maybe they meant 5-7 days from May 6th…also, it says on the website that they respond usually within three weeks. 5-7 days more seems like it would fit the bill of 3 weeks total ;)

“It is our usual practice to respond to appeals within three (3) weeks of the date we receive them.”

anyone out there heard anything yet?? good or bad news?

Nothing :frowning: Still says the same thing on my admissions decision page.

Dear XXXXXXX:

In response to your recent appeal regarding our Fall 2010 admission decision, we have carefully reviewed your application again. We are sorry to inform you that the initial decision stands.

UCLA continues to experience increased interest from qualified transfer students. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate all who wish to attend. We recognize that your accomplishments may assure you a place at another outstanding university. The competitive admission process at UCLA forces us to turn away so many gifted students that we know will succeed at other colleges and universities.

Thank you for your continued interest in UCLA. We wish you success in your academic endeavors.

Sincerely,
Vu T. Tran, Ed.D.
Director

It’s all good. I’m already a Golden Bear. I dont look good in powder blue anyway lol!

It’s okay. Berkeley is better anyways :)

aww i’m sorry to hear that, i’m sure you will love berkeley though!!

i’m appealing because of a missing prereq (I know that’s FATAL for ucla) but i took a math class in san francisco and my councilors told me it would count as calculus I…they told me NOT to take another math class because I would be wasting my time, so I didn’t.
Turns out UCLA doesn’t take this class. bummer for me but I have documentation that I met with a UCLA representative twice and she never mentioned my missing anything, the transfer department numerous times, and a list of all the councilors I have met with over the past two years (with a note next to one date stating I was in there specifically for my math class and that was back in May), as well as a print out from assist.org given to me by my councilor that showed these classes are the same, along with an awesome letter of rec from the head of the honors department.

we’ll see how it goes! good luck everyone else appealing :)

@ Smartyskirt

You win either way :wink: All the best at Cal! :)

So the count beings…

0-1

Yeah, mine was a missing prereq which was recently changed. So lame. Oh well, it was in the stars for me to go to Cal, and I am super excited. I just wanted to live closer to my boyfriend (LA is an hr from OC), and HATE the rain. I guess I can suck it up for a couple years :stuck_out_tongue:

As soon as Cal accepted me, though, I knew I was a Cal Bear. I filed my SIR with my dad (visiting from AZ) last night. No turning back now!

What did you say was your reason for the missing prereq? If you dont mind my asking I’m just nervous :/
