Official UNC Transfer Thread Fall 2011

Hey Ducky, Stressed and Slinky…

A few of us experienced this last year… I was one of the last to hear back even though my application was in and completed early. What I learned from that experience was that it really doesn’t mean anything. I was initially wait-listed about 10 days after Carolina started releasing decisions. And there were people who had to wait even longer than me and some of them were offered admission.

My guess is that you are still in the running for a few of the available spots that are left if you had your app in early and promptly addressed your to-do list.

I remember the utter helplessness I experienced waiting while those that were accepted were discussing on CC whether they were going to accept Carolina’s offer, or whether they should try to live on north or south campus…

It hurt when I was finally denied, but I kept my dream alive, stayed focused and was lucky enough to get accepted as a Junior Transfer this past Friday.

Hang in there and good luck to you guys!

Won’t be able to visit but I’m sure I’ll find my way around come August.
I’m so excited.

They must be looking at things beyond the normal “good looking” high school/college credentials. I do not have very formal credentials, but I think I got in mostly because I am a weird case/character.

I do not have a high school degree[well I have a GED, but most people do not consider that to be a “full” h/s degree…w.e].My CC GPA is okay(around yours…probably a little lower), but I did not have that many leadership/volunteer positions. I took a class at UNC during one summer and did not enjoy it/did not do well, but they didn’t care about that I guess. My SAT scores were average and not really indicative of any of my mathematical or verbal talents bc I do not care for the test and being the age that I am, it is quite awkward taking it in a room of people who are at least five years younger than me.

The extra curricular activities that I put down were pretty unorganized and self-made, which is okay I guess because I live in a town where you really need to “make your own opportunity” to do anything[I remember I put down a few philosophy papers that I have written, volunteering in India before I went to school, winning a britpop musician’s contest, the instruments that I play informally, and the summer I spent writing a bunch of trigonometric proofs].

I did not write an original essay,I used part of an old one that I wrote for another school(I think this is option 4 or something) and modified it to put UNC’s name in it. I emphasized wanting to go to a school that had good research opportunities for physics and mathematics. I had a lot of health problems in my younger years but I only sent UNC a letter about it because they asked about my educational gap. I took this from what I already wrote on Common application.

I have an associates degree, I am also 20 yrs old(I don’t know if this helps because it is a little above the age of a traditional student), and I applied as a Physics major.

When I take my name off of UNC’s list I hope they accept so wait listed students like you who actually want to go to the school. Do not lose hope. I do not know anything really about the college/transfer process, what they look at exactly…I think every school is different. When I applied to a total of 9 schools in the spring, I thought I would be rejected from all of them and so far I have gotten only acceptances. This makes me more hopeful that I will get into my top choice. I think the important thing to show schools is that you really, really want to learn and you are there to do more than just get a degree.

To KJUNC

I remember reading through your ordeal from last year’s post. I really felt for you. I think that it must have been a very lonely feeling there towards the end–especially since so many of the people who had been active on that thread started disappearing. However, some of the active members stuck around and gave encouragement. I thought that was pretty classy of them, and speaks well to their character.

So, that being said, CONGRATS!!! You definitely deserved admittance. Perseverance is truly a virtue.

Cheers!
Slinky

So, amongst those of you in the holding pattern at the moment, anyone care to bet on hearing anything back today?

I think we’ll probably hear nothing–MAYBE tomorrow (that will be the start of a 3-day weekend), but I’m certainly not holding my breath.

Slinky

Still nothing :frowning: Disappointing.
So there won’t be anything posted tomorrow because of Good Friday?

i’m really disappointed also, I received the email last Friday also. I thought I would of heard back by now but then again I thought a 3.7 GPA, 6 years of military service, and tons of other extracurricular activities would of been competitive. Sorry for anyone else that is going through this.

Hopefully decisions will be posted tomorrow! Good luck!

yeah I didn’t hear anything back either. Out of that are still waiting to hear back, what did you apply as? What was your intended degree?

Sophomore in Peace, War, and Defense

And I don’t think we’ll be hearing anything today. I tried calling the office to follow up and I got an automated recording saying the school was closed for the weekend. Happy Easter!

I hope you all hear soon!

I got in!!! whooooo just dont’ know if I wanna leave my current school for it…

Im declining my acceptance since I got into Vandy so hopefully thatll help some of you!

Congrats on Vandy! I’m still waiting to hear from UVA and William and Mary so I guess I’ll see!

I was recently accepted for the fall semester at UNC Chapel Hill.

I have a question that could probably ease my mind if someone can help me out.

I was driving home the other morning and it was raining. It felt like I had a blowout so I tried to pull my car over to the side of the road. While doing this, I hit a sign. My phone was dead so I walked to a buddy’s house that was nearby. The next day, a state trooper calls me and wants to arrange a meeting to talk about the accident.

I didn’t think it was that big of a deal and decided I would talk to him a few days later. However, the next day he put warrant out for my arrest for “Resisting a Public Official.” This is a class 2 misdemeanor. I’m extremely worried that this may affect my admission status with getting into UNC. I know that transfer students have to fill out a community standards form before they are allowed to enroll.

Can someone please tell me that they won’t revoke my admission over a misdemeanor? I’ve been extremely worried since this happened. I’m currently talking to my lawyer. I have no problem explaining my situation to the admissions office, but I was wondering if someone had any type of advice?

Thank you all

On the form it says that stating yes will not necessarily preclude you from admission. Basically, they will consider the circumstance and as long as you are not a threat to the campus you should be fine. I personally think you have nothing to worry about. In my first semester I got written up for alcohol at my college and I was still admitted to UNC.

go to Vandy. it’s ranked higher.

dkid25, my friend had a misdemeanor in high school and he still goes to UNC. you’re fine trust me.

About the Vandy comment (“because it’s ranked higher”), that should never be the sole reason on attending a school. . . UNC and Vandy are very different schools with very different environments.
I turned Vandy down for a much more liberal school.
