Official University of Chicago 2020 Waitlisted Applicants Thread

^Bump! Let’s keep this thread active for the next coming week or so since apparently most of the waitlist acceptances will be heard this coming week or two.

Waitlist acceptances should not happen until at least May 2nd because Chicago needs to know how many people are coming to the school from their accepted students. Good luck to all of you!

@jarrett211 There have been a few posted on this thread, though it is likely that acceptances will be more common after May 1st.

@NotVerySmart My apologies then. I did not realize.

Question, if an applicant is admitted off from the wait list who is in a low income family, (under 12K), will they be able to get 100% of need based financial aid?

@Techman24 I believe so, but they might be more inclined to place someone who is full-pay higher on the waitlist as a result.

Jarrett is right. Waitlist students will get the same financial aid EA or RD admits would. If Chicago accepted you and gave you little or no financial aid, all they’d accomplish would be to lower their yield.

@NotVerySmart, What exaclty is the % yeild, and how does is account for the number of students who are accept a place on the waiting list and for who will get off of the waiting list? I heard that there are approximately 1000 people on the waiting list as of right now. Is this true?

Percent yield is the number of students enrolled divided by the number of students admitted. Schools want to have to higher yields because it makes them appear more favorable. Chicago, for example, had close to a 60% yield last year, 1500 students enrolled out of 2500 admitted. The lower the yield of EA and RD students, the greater number of people that will get accepted off the waitlist.

Thank you for that. (:

Now from that, what do you think the % yield will be this year ? If the % yeild is low this year, then their might be an increase in waitlist acceptances.

The % yield (the % of admitted students enrolling at Chicago) has been in the low 60s for a few years now, when waitlist admits are taken into account. Though we don’t have any definite information, there have been reports that EA yield was up sharply this year, so more spaces have been filled in the class of 2020. Hard to say what happened during the RD round, because it’s an ongoing process.

I’m not sure how many students are on the waitlist, though if someone can find a link giving numbers for this year that would be great. Here on CC, a lot of applicants have been waitlisted - not sure how many accepted their spot on the list - so it could easily be 2000+.

Which students get off the waitlist will depend on institutional need. If Chicago accepted 50 thespians and 43 go elsewhere, they’ll look for a few students who’ve been heavily involved in acting. If the baseball team is missing an infield because the 1B, 2B, 3B, and shortstop recruits all went to Vanderbilt instead, some baseball players could come off the waitlist (though, this being Div. III, they’ll still need top-notch academic credentials). You get the idea. The odds of getting in via the waitlist are too low to justify getting your hopes up, so you should get ready to love the schools where you’ve been accepted, and any good news from Chicago will be an unexpected boon and not a crushing disappointment. Best of luck.

@NotVerySmart that’s what I thought, too. but honestly, the acceptance rate via waitlist is actually same if not higher than regular acceptance rate, anyway.

Well thank you for that (: Has anybody been placed on the waitlist for Florida?

I have heard yield is up this year, and I expect yield to only continue to increase in the coming years as Chicago finally begins to get the recognition it deserves.

Not to indulge in self-congratulation, but it’s hard to believe it took this long. See:

i, too, was waitlisted!!
does anyone know how many students were wait listed this fall?
also, when do we get our final decisions?

good luck to eveyone

This year Chicago might be taking around 100 from the waitlist; which is just an estimate because as far as I know, although the yield might be a bit higher this year, all the other factors are almost similar as to that of last year.
Kinda depressing, but then again, we must not lose hope.

And Chicago although would like to take people from the waitlist who are 100% ready to commit, still prefers taking people with lesser need, especially in the case of international students (that’s what is the negative point in my application), as most of it’s resources must have already been allocated to the EA and RD admits.

Nevertheless, the results might still come as a surprise, and I hope everyone is able to get into their dream colleges.

The majority of students get notified by May 2nd , but there are others who had already gotten off of the wait list. 2000 people were offered a spot on the wait list, but we would have to see how many people will be accepted when we find out on May 2nd, which for those students will be taking the AP Chemistry/Env. Sci Exam (GOOD LUCK TO THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE TAKING IT!!! (

@physicsguy1997, are you from Florida?

@Techman24 How do you know that we’ll be able to find out how many people got off the waitlist on May 2? Or are you saying starting on May 2?
