Probable starting on May 2nd. Hope we get in !!! (:
Seriously, did anybody from Florida get Waitlisted???
PLEASE TELL ME!!!
Florida has a population of 20 million. I’d think there are a few Floridians on any 1000+ name waitlist. Now turn caps lock off.
What should I send my regional counselor?
The only thing that you need to send your regional counselor is a letter of interest that you want to attend UChicago. You can do this by email. Also, you would need to go on your status page and click on the “Reply to Wait List” that you want to stay on the wait list for Uchicago. Good Luck (:
That’s all you need. And here is the page that says so:
https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/uncommon-blog/message-our-applicants-1
After re-reading my letter of decision from my portal, I just noticed that it mentions “spring” of “fall”. Does it say the same thing for you guys or just me?
“…Should space become available later in the spring, we will revisit the files of students who have accepted a place on the waiting list. If you would like to be considered for admission at that time, please reply using our waitlist response form. If you would like to provide any additional information to the committee, you may update your file in your UChicago Account…”
@oldmenewme It says that because it’s Spring now, at the current time where people are making their decisions, not because they accept people for the Spring term (as far as I know, they don’t seem to)
I heard from my admissions counselor that they don’t intend to go past may 1st with wait list acceptances
@jmreilly97 Are you international or domestic? Also, then are you saying that the rest (or atleast most) of the waitlist acceptances will be announced this coming week?
Is this year yield high than last year?they may not need any waitlist ?
So much unknown information… At this point I’m going to stop worrying about when they notify people. The decision will come when the decision comes. Seems best to stop worrying and hope for the best just like the earlier rounds of admission. Good luck to everyone!
To those who have notified their regional admission counselors prior to receiving their waitlist acceptance that they would be interested in taking a gap year or anyone else who has knowledge/experience about/with this:
In order for your regional counselor to offer you a place into the next year’s class and take a gap year, do you HAVE to notify him/her that you would be interested in taking a gap year in the first place before (probably within your LOCI or something)? I haven’t yet, but I’m not exactly sure if I would accept taking a gap year if I happen to receive such an offer. I’m afraid that if I do express my interest in a gap year, then I would solely be evaluated for a place into next year’s class instead of starting this fall (assuming that I have some miraculous chance in the first place). However, I do have some interest in it.
oh wow, May 2nd is the last notification date for waitlist? haven’t heard a word from them since my submission of continuing interest and update.
Also, would it be too late to contact my regional counselor or UChicago’s men’s soccer coach if I would be interested to play for their D3 team (who should I initially ask since my intentions of joining the team would be to up my chances of getting off the waitlist )? I haven’t mentioned about my interests in playing anywhere on my app/LOCI update, but I would be down if it helps my chances of getting off the waitlist. I don’t have a video of my games, but I’m pretty sure I can compete in their team and D3 in general, so I’m not really sure how I would go about with this if I were to actually contact the coach or my counselor about this.
Okay, here is some analysis on the current state of the waitlist.
This year, UChicago accepted approximately 2,378 students out of 31,286 for an acceptance rate of 7.6%. Given a target class size of 1,400-1,500 (a wide estimate), the school expects its yield this year to be around 61%, like last year. Sources say that UChicago may be taking ~80 students off the waitlist this year, but this is unconfirmed.
Last year, from looking through the 2019 waitlist thread, UChicago accepted kids off the waitlist on a rolling basis (usually in batches) up until May 6th, when the waitlist effectively closed. Most of the decisions last year were released on Fridays throughout the month of April. The last big batch of waitlist acceptances on the thread came out during the week of April 27, and after that, there were no acceptances mentioned on the thread (other than gap year calls on May 6). This doesn’t mean that UChicago doesn’t accept in May; it’s just that the school tries its best to notify all of its waitlisted students before the May 1st deadline to save those kids deposit fees. Of course, there will be a few after May 1st when UChicago gets its final numbers, but there will not be many.
Now, let’s analyze the results from this year. UChicago sent out its first rolling batch on T-Th, April 5-7 with the acceptances of strugglebus666, TrazCapDEV, TrazCapDEV’s school friend, and VeryLuckyParent’s son. Given that CC is relatively small sample of the larger population, I would expect that 10-25 students were let off the waitlist those three days.
On Wednesday, April 13, calvert’s son was let off the waitlist, indicating that Chicago sent out another batch that day. I would assume that another 10-15 or so kids were let in.
On Wednesday, April 20, several kids on the UChicago Reddit page were let off the waitlist. I would assume that Chicago sent out another batch that day, with another 10-15 students let in. There seems to be a trend that this year’s target “waitlist phone call” date is Wednesday.
Given that last year, much of the waitlist offers were given out during the last week of April, I would expect this week’s target day to be Wednesday, April 27, with approximately 20 kids let off if yield is normal. After this week, chances do go down quite a lot, but will still be existent until early May. Remember that this is all speculation! However, if no contact from UChicago comes by the end of next week (Friday, May 6th), I would be safe to consider UChicago a rejection. Yeah, there was one kid who got off in June due to Summer Melt, but the chances of that are really low.
Regardless, good luck to everyone waiting! Hopefully this week will bring some luck!
Also, another realization… Friday was the day of choice for UChicago last year, as RD decisions were also released on a Friday for the Class of 2019. However, most of the waitlist decisions this year came out on a Wednesday (4/6, 4/13, and 4/20), so it seems that the new day of choice is Wednesday. This makes a lot of sense since RD decision day, March 16, was also a Wednesday. Just an observation.
@ensigmapi So assuming that they’ll release waitlist acceptances this Wed, does that mean they’ll initially contact people a day or two before Wed via email then set up a time to phone call on Wed? Or?
Also, has anyone from California gotten off the waitlist yet? If so, which specific region?
Probably Wednesday morning via email for a phone call about the waitlist. At least, that’s what other accepted students have been getting.
@ensigmapi thank you so much for the info.
Hey everyone, I don’t usually post on CC but I’ve been nervously and religiously following this thread and I thought I’d chime in because I just got accepted off the wait list! For after a gap year. I’m not sure if my wait list ~journey~ so to speak will be applicable to everyone because I knew I wanted a gap year early on and have been pursuing the idea since my EA deferral (I am abroad on a foreign exchange scholarship right now and don’t get back to America until late July, so going out of state for college so soon after returning home just wasn’t going to work for me). I was so nervous all day haha, my regional counselor emailed me asking if we could chat on the phone and I knew it was probably a good sign but I still couldn’t help but think maybe he was just calling to reject me! So happy and relieved.
I wish you all luck, be it with University of Chicago or your other options!! <3
@dizzy99, congrats my friend
