Official University of Chicago Class of 2011 Early Action Results

I figured there would be some response-bias. Its just that I saw next to no one. Man, I’m so happy. I spent at least 50 hours on my app, and now I’m relieved. Yay.

Decision: Deferred

Stats:

* SAT: 650 across the board

 • SAT IIs: Didn’t Bother
 • GPA: 3.5ish unweighted
 • Rank: Don’t Know

Subjective:

* Essays: I thought my essays were quite good. I’d been thinking about my topic for a while even before I thought about chicago so I thought it went really well. Last supper in the Roman countryside, with many anachronisms.

 • Teacher Recs: I liked all my teachers last year. I had 4 letters of rec. Latin, AP Stats, AP English, Music. Even I thought it was ridiculous. In retrospect probably wouldn’t of sent all 4.
 • Counselor Rec: 500 kids per counselor. I never even met her. You do the math.
 • Hook (if any): I had Cancer at the end of middle school and the very beginning of high school so that affected my grades a bit. My mom died of cancer during that time.

Location/Person:

* State or Country: California

 • School Type: Public
 • Ethnicity: Caucasian
 • Gender: Male

Other Factors: I spent last summer at brown and got an excellent recommendation from the proffessor who taught my class so I threw that in with suppliments.
General Comments: I’m pretty upset I was deferred but I feel better in that very few of my friends got accepted EA or ED this year. I’m a pretty decisive guy and I’m not particularly fond of waiting 2-3 months to find out I need to wait another 4 months. I’d love to go to University of Chicago but I’m willing to accept my fate either way. I’ll be up writing suppliments until April 1s. Congrats all ya’ll who got in. I wish you luck and hope to join you.

I’ll second that! Yay!

def the most selective year…this IS cc though, not going to be many rejectees wanting to post either

Decision: ACCEPTED!!!

Stats:

SAT: 770 CR, 720 M, 690 W

SAT IIs: 750 Bio, 710 US History, 670 Math 2

GPA: 3.8 unweighted, 4.16 weighted

Rank: 4th out of 28.

AP Scores: 5 US History, 4 Bio, 4 English language

Subjective:

Essays: I really liked my essays, especially the Why Chicago one. Thought it had a good hook (“I want to go to the school where fun goes to die…”).

Teacher Recs: I had my AP LAtin teacher write one. She’s known me since I was in 8th grade and she really likes me. Also, my AP Euro teacher (also my freshman history teacher) wrote one for me. He is a Chicago Grad, and his family has endowed a professorship there (his brother is also a huge donor).

Counselor Rec: Wife of the history teacher. Had her as my AP English teacher last year. She liked me. So I bet it was pretty good.

Hook (if any): I’ve got rather unusual goals. I want to eventually start a real-estate development business in India. So I’ve been to India twice in the last two years and have learned a lot and have got some good anecdotes. Also, my aunt is a grad and is friends with Ted O’neill, the admissions dean. He read my app himself.

Location/Person:

State or Country: California

School Type: Private

Ethnicity: Caucasian

Gender: Male

Other Factors: I spent the last two summers in India, which gave me lots of good essay material. Add that to the previous stuff.
General Comments: I’m super happy. I got rejected from Penn ED, but I decided after I sent both apps that I wanted to go to chicago more than Penn. Good luck to all of the deferred; to the rejected, don’t worry, it will all work out. Chin up. And to my future classmates, see you next year.

Condolances to those who were deferred/rejected.

Decision: ACCEPTED

STATS

ACT: 31
SAT: Didn’t Take
GPA: 3.96/4.0
Rank: 20/350
Other stats: AP US History–5, AP Chemistry–3

SUBJECTIVE
Essays: Did the first one, it was pretty good. I managed to change my personal narrative to fit it. The shorter ones were good.
Teacher Recs: Both from teachers who have known me for a long time. One was kind of generic, the other really really good.
Counselor Rec: Good. She knows me well and she wants to see me succeed.
Hook: eh…

LOCATION/PERSON:

State/Country: Illinois, northwest suburbs
School Type: Public, general curriculum
Ethnicity: caucasion
Gender: female

Other Factors: Captain of the Speech Team, um…got a 35 on my english component of the ACT, I have 6 weighted courses on a 7 course day, 3 of which are APs
General Comments: I’m super excited about getting in. Chicago was my only reach. now i’m concerned about how I’m going to afford it.

I WAS ACCEPTED!!!

So here’s what happened:
first they lost some of my documents.
Sent me a deferred, saying I need to complete the application.

Then they found them.

Now I’m in!

GPA: 3.34 (my goodness)
SATI : writing 800
critical reading 800
math 740

SATII: Math II c 800
US History 770

AP exams: BC Calculus 5
AP French 5
AP US HIstory 5

Rank: 2nd decile

Here’s a line from my essay:

Black background with white lines depicting a chessboard in jarring perspective. Doll-sized aristocrats and naked women stroll arm in arm along the squares stretching into the pictorial horizon.

I think my essay was quite good. When they sent me my acceptance letter, it said something like, We aren’t taking you based on your numbers, but on your achievements and your words.
I think my essay saved me.

Teacher recs: one said that I compared to the best of his students when he was a professor at University of California San Diego. Another one was from a professor at Boston University, I was taking a college course in discrete math. The third one was pretty generic, from my history teacher. A supplemental from a close friend of mine, kind offset the “highly motivated serious geek” tone of the other ones. Counselor rec:
he compared me to John Nash from A Beautiful Mind. I wasn’t too pleased with the schizophrenic analogy thing back then, but I guess it did me no harm!

Hook: no. I’m Jewish, from New England, a semi-urban public school.

Other factors:
well, my mom and I made a list of why they would accept me. It was something like this:

 1. My interview made it clear that I’m comfortable with the city. So they weren’t worried about me and Hyde Park.
 2. I wanted U of C so much.
 3. They’re nice guys.
 4. It’s Christmas. Perhaps they read my application over a warm cup of chocolate. Who knows what goes on out there?
 5. Life is good.

General Comments:
I didn’t think that I had a chance with my GPA. And I didn’t understand that the essay counted for so much. I think that future applicants should not be discouraged if their ‘statistics’ don’t match up with the school’s profile. Especially Chicago, I think, has a gift of looking beyond “numbers” to find what they want.

Oh,
and I want to thank you guys on CC for encouraging me back in the fall. You had more faith in me than I did, and though this is absurd, it is one of the reasons I decided to apply. Thanks babes!

“I think my essay was quite good. When they sent me my acceptance letter, it said something like, We aren’t taking you based on your numbers, but on your achievements and your words.
I think my essay saved me.”

Everyone’s letter said that haha

Also, I think everyone got a handwritten holiday card from their regional admissions guy… I did

^ Me too! Did it mention anything about your essay as well? :D

**Decision: Accepted **

[] Teacher Recs: I believe they were all good.

General Comments: Go Chicago!

hey the international officer didn’t send me any holiday cards :'(… and i’m sure she had less to send out than the others.

now i feel unloved.

orangetree-
congrats!! I remember your chances thread, and I’m glad to see everything worked out and you got your wish!! If you have fb, there is a UChicago 2011 group

Hooray! =)

I don’t mean to spam or anything…but for those accepted, how did you think ECs played a part in the decision? Will brilliant essays atone for weaker extracurriculars?

Oh my god. Daenerys? From “A Game of Thrones”?? I’m reading that book right now! And even though I’m only 60 pages in, I must say that I really like it so far!

Correct me if I’m wrong but

Accepted - 63 - 75.9%
Deferred - 16 - 19.3%
Rejected - 4 - 4.8%

That’s pretty significant.
If you want to get into chicago, you should get a CC account.
(Gotta love that correlation)

lol i like that hehe, but you’re not taking into account those who didn’t get in and therefore are not posting on this board!
