[] Interview: September. It went okay, I guess. I was worried for the longest time because I was incredibly nervous and I had some trouble getting my answers out. Turned out not to make a difference.
[] Art Supplement:
Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: 10/31
[] State (if domestic applicant): Illinois
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Hispanic/white
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket:100000-110000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Legally, I’m a URM. I’m not first generation college, but my mother did only complete her associate’s degree a few years ago. My father’s never attended college.

My big hook was French-I completed a year of French independently, placed first in the National French Contest, won a French essay contest. [/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Very well-rounded. Few EC’s, but I devote a lot of time to them. Technically a URM; essays were pretty good. Passion in one academic area-language-shone through. I love this school and my love was evident in the Chicago essay.
[] Weaknesses: My schedule this year isn’t excellent (case in point: AP environmental science as opposed to an actual science class), and again, few EC’s. My app is a little small-let’s say my common app had more blanks-compared to those of some other accepted applicants.
EDIT: Should include that I’m in my school’s first graduating class and this resulted in the scheduling conflicts that prevented my schedule from being awesome. I made this clear.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Great hair. For a serious answer, look above.
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul]
Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: In with a University Scholarship of $5000… Extremely excited.

Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] Common App Main: I wrote about how being an artist had changed the way I thought about the world and how it affected my other studies. Basically the intellectual side of creating art. I think it was pretty decent in concept and fairly well written, 8/10[/li][] EC Short Answer: I wrote about teaching a clay class at an art center. It was alright at best, 4/10
[] Extended essay(which topic): Dissolving/Solvent, I talked about my attempts to dissolve time through various means so I could meet a historical figure I had a crush on. It was humorous and I think pretty well written. It also got across my personality really well and was pretty quirky, so I’d say 9/10
[] Optional Essay: I talked about my favorite things in the last year, like All the King’s Men, Seventh Seal, Baroque painters, and Chip Music. Not particularly well written but quirky, 7/10
[] Why Chicago: I wrote about how I was a huge nerd and I would look forward to studying for hours because it’s what I found fun. Brought up a couple specific things about the school. Pretty decent. (7/10)
[] Other:[/ul]
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: GeoSci teacher, he’s had me for two years and I don’t actually know if he likes me. Also I never read it.
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: Again I didn’t read it. My APUSH teacher who didn’t know me super well, but he always considered me smart. I don’t know what he wrote.
[] Counselor Rec: He was telling me about how he wrote so much and he’d never written so much about a student before, because I was so great (totally undeserved but whatever, I’m happy), so pretty good I guess.

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Good essays, good transcript (except math),
[] Weaknesses: poor ECs, math
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think my essays and activities showed my interests pretty consistently. I really like learning and that came across in my essays as well.
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul]
Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:

Congratulations to everyone who got in! Anyone who got rejected, I’m really sorry. I’m sure you will find luck elsewhere. Chicago just might not be a great fit. To those who got deferred, good luck! I hope you get in!
I’m still surprised I got in, and I totally don’t deserve it, but I’m happy.

[] Extended essay(which topic): 8 Find x: I said x was in the white light we see before we die, because X is essentially the answer to all the problems we have, and that’s the only time in our lives where we have everything figured out and when we see what was truly important to us.
[] Optional Essay: 6: Talked about my favorite books, shows, etc, pretty generic
[] Why Chicago: 8: Lauded them on their academics but made it personal as to why I want to study there

[] Teacher Recommendation #1: 10- science teacher who has known me since elementary school, absolutely glowing, said I was one of the hardest working kids she’s met
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: 7- My ap literature teacher, it was formal and a little detached since she doesn’t know me that well, but she praised how well I wrote, researched and could interpret literature

[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I was accepted because I do have strong stats, but also I have done a lot of volunteer work and I seem to know what my passions are (politics and spanish) and in school I’ve made steps to follow them. I’m also a first generation and I’ve worked very hard in high school so that I could go to college.
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] I definetly would have not procrastinated on my essay, I put off the find x one for the longest time. I also wouldn’t have worried so much about the interview, it wasn’t that big of a deal. Not a lot though because I got in so I must have done something right :)

[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] Common App Main: About how in Socratic method-style Freshman Geometry I figured out that the real point of the class was to teach us how to teach our peers. Clever introduction detailing the eccentricities of the teacher that segued into how this unconventional class inspired me. Very Chicago.[/li][] EC Short Answer: Same theme as Common App main. Talked about how my work on three publications was a way of showing my school community the importance of humanities. Managed to make this not sound pretentious.
[] Extended essay(which topic): Two types of people. Used the metaphor of Captain Ahab and the whale from Moby-Dick: how I was the multi-disciplinary humanities “whale” among single-focus math-major “Ahab” peers. Unconventional metaphor within a standard “I stand out because” paper.
[] Optional Essay: Compared Sherlock Holmes mysteries to Freud’s early case studies, how Holmes wraps up neatly but the answers to Freud’s questions are not simple. Segued into the complex nature of questions, which works perfectly with their promotional lit.
[] Why Chicago: Straightforward. Talked about considering a Classics major, which I think stood out. Mentioned specific programs and major tracks, grad. school, &c. Demonstrated extensive research into U of C.[/ul]
[li] Other: N/A
[ul][/li][] Teacher Recommendation #1: From teacher I wrote about in Common App essay. Known him for four years, A+ from him in Geometry and Philosophy. Waived right to read, but I assume it was glowing.
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: English teacher who also coached me in cross-country, known him for four years. Waived right to read, but I believe he talked about the playfully academic writing I did in his electives and my progression to varsity on the team. He writes a ton of recs. each year and he’s one of the best in my school at recommending students.
[] Counselor Rec: Also cross-country coach. Obviously I take education seriously, probably wrote about that.

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None in this category mentioned on app[/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Teachers said my essays had zero cheesiness factor. Great recs., extracurriculars balanced out having no work or service mentioned. Interest in unique major. Sold myself aggressively.
[] Weaknesses: SATs not spectacular, GPA took slump from all As to all A-minuses sophomore year, broke 4.0.

Anyone who truly does have the credentials this poster claims, such as 2400SAT 2 summers at PROMYS, as a black male <$30,000 would be reasonably at worst deferred.
“Lostmypants” has one post and registered this month. What are the chances?

Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] Common App Main: My Chinese sucked until I realized it was a huge mistake to not learn it properly. Took Chinese in high school, did extra work outside of school to improve my Chinese to the point of being able to give a half-decent speech. English teacher said he had nothing to criticize. 10/10[/li][] EC Short Answer: Expanded more about the community service I did in China. 7/10
[] Extended essay(which topic): Find X. Personified X as someone running away from the alphabet, found it and learned it was having an identity crisis on account of all the things it is (list of references I sneaked in include Malcolm X, generation x, pirates, X-Men, calculus, XOXO, etc.). Then turned it into a discussion of identity, asking what are we, if through life everyone else forces their own perceptions of us onto our identities. 9/10
[] Optional Essay: Just a love fest for my favorite author and band. 8/10
[] Why Chicago: Talked about attending the Summer Session there and how much I loved it, from the weather to the bookstores to the people. Discussed the Core and how I thought it was a wonderful fit. 10/10
[] Other:[/ul]
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: Probably decent. Didn’t read. 8/10
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: Probably decent. Didn’t read. 8/10
[] Counselor Rec: Our guidance counselor does nothing for us. I’ve never been given any college advice from him, and everyone who’s tried to just gets a “Look it up yourself.” No clue/10.
[] Additional Rec:
[] Interview: Went extremely well. Talked for 15 minutes about bookstores, then talked about perception and cognitive science. At the end she said she felt I’d be a great fit at UChicago. 10/10
[] Art Supplement:
Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: October 8th.
[] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: No FA.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):[/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, interview, my chemistry stuff?
[] Weaknesses: I have an ugly transcript freshman and sophomore year, probably didn’t do enough extra curriculars.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Isn’t this a little redundant? It can be shown in the strengths and weaknesses…
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] Find a way to put my teaching in there, because I’ve been up 3 AM working with 5 different people so they don’t fail their chemistry test the next morning. Spend more time revising my essays. Have a much, much better freshman and sophomore year, and stop getting 0s on math homework checks. Maybe I came across as too much of a science man, when I honestly love Humanities just as much. But I don’t know, even my interviewer said I’d be a great fit.

Or were my essays just not as good as I was led to believe? If so, that stings, since writing is one of my passions…
Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: It’s disappointing, but I have to move on. My English teacher never felt my essays had any problems with them, and I felt the Find X had enough depth of thought, and the Why UChicago had enough heartfelt passion, but I guess it didn’t cover the rest of my app. Well, it’s still my first choice, and I still have a shot. Congratulations to everyone who got in, good luck to everyone deferred, and to those who are rejected: What UChicago looks for is different than what other colleges look for. You’ll find where you belong.
