(Most of my time is spent teaching other kids in my grade so they don’t fail their classes, but I didn’t really know how to put this on my app. I know I should’ve, but I just left it out because it’s not quite tutoring. It’s just something there.)

Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] Common App Main: My Chinese sucked until I realized it was a huge mistake to not learn it properly. Took Chinese in high school, did extra work outside of school to improve my Chinese to the point of being able to give a half-decent speech. English teacher said he had nothing to criticize. 10/10[/li][] EC Short Answer: Expanded more about the community service I did in China. 7/10
[] Extended essay(which topic): Find X. Personified X as someone running away from the alphabet, found it and learned it was having an identity crisis on account of all the things it is (list of references I sneaked in include Malcolm X, generation x, pirates, X-Men, calculus, XOXO, etc.). Then turned it into a discussion of identity, asking what are we, if through life everyone else forces their own perceptions of us onto our identities. 9/10
[] Optional Essay: Just a love fest for my favorite author and band. 8/10
[] Why Chicago: Talked about attending the Summer Session there and how much I loved it, from the weather to the bookstores to the people. Discussed the Core and how I thought it was a wonderful fit. 10/10
[] Other:[/ul]
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: Probably decent. Didn’t read. 8/10
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: Probably decent. Didn’t read. 8/10
[] Counselor Rec: Our guidance counselor does nothing for us. I’ve never been given any college advice from him, and everyone who’s tried to just gets a “Look it up yourself.” No clue/10.
[] Additional Rec:
[] Interview: Went extremely well. Talked for 15 minutes about bookstores, then talked about perception and cognitive science. At the end she said she felt I’d be a great fit at UChicago. 10/10
[] Art Supplement:
Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: October 8th.
[] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: No FA.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):[/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, interview, my chemistry stuff?
[] Weaknesses: I have an ugly transcript freshman and sophomore year, probably didn’t do enough extra curriculars.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Isn’t this a little redundant? It can be shown in the strengths and weaknesses…
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] Find a way to put my teaching in there, because I’ve been up 3 AM working with 5 different people so they don’t fail their chemistry test the next morning. Spend more time revising my essays. Have a much, much better freshman and sophomore year, and stop getting 0s on math homework checks. Maybe I came across as too much of a science man, when I honestly love Humanities just as much. But I don’t know, even my interviewer said I’d be a great fit.

Or were my essays just not as good as I was led to believe? If so, that stings, since writing is one of my passions…
Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: It’s disappointing, but I have to move on. My English teacher never felt my essays had any problems with them, and I felt the Find X had enough depth of thought, and the Why UChicago had enough heartfelt passion, but I guess it didn’t cover the rest of my app. Well, it’s still my first choice, and I still have a shot. Congratulations to everyone who got in, good luck to everyone deferred, and to those who are rejected: What UChicago looks for is different than what other colleges look for. You’ll find where you belong.
