[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul]
Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
I am so surprised. I never took an AP before this year so that was a strike on Academic Rigor. I also doubted my essay only because I was very critical of my application. The University of Chicago was my first choice and my reach school as well so I wanted to get in so bad that every little mistake made me worry that I wouldn’t get in. I really didn’t think I had what it takes. I had an ounce of hope so I held off applying elsewhere and thank god it paid off.

[] Art Supplement:
Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: 10/31
[] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Large public

[] Income Bracket: $80,000ish, single mom
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):[/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Writing, essays, probably recommendations
[] Weaknesses: I was mainly worried about my lack of extracurriculars and “leadership positions”
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I really have no idea. I’m still in shock.
[] What would you have done differently?: I mean, I can’t say now that I would have done anything differently. But to have been more at ease while I was awaiting my decision… I probably should have done more extracurricular/volunteer-wise.[/ul]
Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: I’m completely surprised and thrilled to have been admitted - I would have never thought it possible, since about a dozen students from my high school have applied over the past few years and only one has gotten in. Luckily, that one admitted student was a friend of mine and helped to calm me down while I was waiting for that blessed e-mail. I’m one of those kids whose friends always tell them there’s no way they won’t succeed, but I never believe them. I’m going to go cry tears of joy for another few hours before I order all of my Christmas gifts from the UChicago store…

Decision: Accepted

[] ACT (breakdown): 35 (36 Eng, 34 M, 35 R, 34 Sci, 9 W), but I think UChi might have only been sent my 33 (35 Eng, 33 M, 33 R, 30 Sci, 8 W)

[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Chem, AP Art History, AP Lit, AP Psych, Econ/Gov Honors, Spanish III Honors, Dual-enroll Statistics (We’re on the block schedule, Econ/Gov isn’t offered AP, and they couldn’t fit AP Stat into my schedule, so it’s the most rigorous possible)
[] Number of other EA applicants in your school: none that I know of for UChi
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):[/ul] National Merit, AP Scholar with Honors, All-Star at the High School National Championship Tournament, QuestBridge Finalist
[/li]

[li] Volunteer/Community service:[/ul] All my clubs make community service a priority, including the quizbowl team, but honestly I have almost nothing outside of that.
[/li]

Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] Common App Main: This was the same essay I used for the QuestBridge essay that had almost the same prompt. I thought it was pretty solid. Around an 8 I guess.[/li][] EC Short Answer: About quizbowl. It was really sincere and I thought it was as good as it could be for being so short. 8
[] Extended essay(which topic): (2 types of people) I really liked this essay and think it probably got me in. I wrote about how people are either C#s or Db’s. It’s in the “Post Your Essay” thread. 9 or 10.
[] Optional Essay: Pretty good. Maybe too informal. 7ish I guess.
[] Why Chicago: Again, good, but perhaps not specific enough. I’d still go 8 I think.
[] Other:[/ul]
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: My AP US History Teacher and quizbowl coach who works with me on a daily basis and has a lot of respect for my intelligence and work ethic. I didn’t see it but I’d expect it was pretty good.
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: My AP Lang teacher who loved me and gave me 8s and 9s on every essay in there. Again, I didn’t see it. But I assume it was good.

[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I guess it was the essays.
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] Volunteered more for sure.
Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: I’m really excited. I’m still waiting to see from my RD schools, like Stanford and Amherst, but I’d definitely be thrilled to go to UChi. Congratulations to everyone else who got in! And if you got deferred or rejected, you’ll still end up somewhere great that’s a good fit for you. No worries.

[] Why Chicago: Great! (9). Wrote about love for the city of chicago and the universities great academic programs
[] Other:[/ul] Essays were good, but they could have been better. I wasn’t overly pleased with them. I think the actual thought behind the essays mattered more than my style of writing. I guess Uchicago really does want to know how you think and whether or not you’d fit into their environment
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: Great
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: Great
[] Counselor Rec: Great
Other Factors: Awarded University Merit Scholarship ($10000) per year
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:

I am overjoyed, happy that my college search is nearly over, and most of all, relieved. After getting rejected from Penn ED, I didn’t expect much. I was shaking as I opened the decision tab, and I felt like a huge burden was lifted off my shoulders. I will apply to Northwestern, but most likely will go to this school because of the scholarship money awarded. Go Maroons!!

Other Factors:
**General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: This college application process has been stressful, but I’m really glad it happened the way it did. It showed me that everything happens for a reason. I applied ED to Wash U, but was deferred, and was heartbroken. When I found out I was accepted to U of C, I really, really, really knew that everything really does happen for a reason. I know that it must suck/be cliche for people who were deferred or rejected to read comments like this next one, but to those of you who were deferred or rejected from ANY school, keep your head high. As long as you continue to be a good person and work hard, doors will open that you have never even dreamed of. **

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths:ACT score was decent, Immigrant factor might have helped, I speak three languages.
[] Weaknesses: Pathetic GPA, Horrible school and school district.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I had a horrible first two years in high school, e.g. the ‘D’ in Honors Biology did not get balanced out by an ‘A’ in Honors College Biology.
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] Applied regular decision after my fall grades came out.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
I can only blame myself for the academic sins that I committed when I was younger. Congratulations to those of you who were accepted, or were at least deferred, you obviously proved you were more deserving of going to Chicago.

My one gripe is this: The extroverted world is not made for a social introvert such as I.
