[] Other stats (AIME, AMC, etc.): ??

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: Co-founder/President of National Chinese Honors Society, Vice President of Key Club, Member of National Honors Society, Varsity Soccer, Volunteer at local food drive, Piano (self-taught musician), DDR (kind of informal but I showed my passion for it), Tutored friends and fellow students for free
[] Awards listed on app: Highest GPA in school since junior year, 3 year Honor Roll, 3 year Academic Lettering, AP Scholar with Distinction
[] Job/Work Experience: N/A
[] Common App Essay: Very creative if I say so myself (I’m very hypercritical on myself), counselor said it was her favorite/best college essay she’s ever read
[] Why Chicago Essay: Decent, not the best; answer was a broad and to a certain extent, generic.
[] Optional Favorite Things Essay: Good, nothing amazing.
[] Extended Supplemental Essay: Above Average.
[] Teacher Recs (if you saw them): I’m assuming one was good and the other was okay.
[] Counselor Rec (if you saw them): She and I recently had our differences.
[] Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): Alumni interview, went to the guy’s office, (40 minute drive). He was very nice, laid back, and made me feel relaxed. Interview went well overall though I feel that my weakness was that I didn’t ask too many questions about the University itself.
[li] Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): N/A
[/li]

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Colorado
[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): Public, N/A
[] Ethnicity: Asian (Korean)
[] Gender: Male
[] Applied for Financial Aid: Yes
[] Strengths: Very rigorous course load (arguably hardest 4-year high-school schedule among my senior classmates), Underscored my passion(s) well, Common App essay = awesome
[] Weaknesses: Low standardized test scores. Lack of major awards. ORM (Over Represented Minority). Worked on app last minute. Why chicago essay. No job experience. Potentially one/two weak letter of recs.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I have no idea. I was banking on an acceptance letter. Guess it really was competitive this year or I greatly overestimated myself.
[] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Get to find out about MIT EA tomorrow…
[] Where else are you applying? Cornell (University) Dartmouth Duke Harvard UPenn Princeton Yale

[/ul]Other Factors: N/A
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Contratulations to those who got accepted. To those that got deferred/rejected, lets stay strong.

P.S. My apologies if there’s an error with my stats as I filled this template out ahead of time in an effort to distract myself.

I didn’t realize how much being deferred hurts. I mean…I guess it’s good that I wasn’t flat out rejected. But blah.

Decision: Deferred

Stats:
SAT I (by section): Math 670 CR 650 Writing 650
SAT IIs: 720 ush
GPA, Unweighted and Weighted: UW 3.97/4.0 W 5.67 / 6.0
Rank: 7/274
ACT: 29 composite
APs (including this year’s): 3 euro history, 5 us history, 5 ap lang and comp, taking Physics B, Chemistry, Lit, and Gov this year.
IBs (including this year’s: n/a
Senior Year Courseload: Basically toughest possible, except for AP Calc (Which there was no way i was taking, sorry.)
Number of Apps from Your School: Just me.
Other stats (AIME, AMC, etc.): n/a

Subjective:
EC’s listed on app: Your basic stuff. Honor societies (3), hi-q team, drama club, satirical magazine etc.

Volunteer/Community Service: S.H.I.P. students helping international peace, created by me and two of my friends, we’ve done a ton of service projects. Pretty unique, I thought.

Awards listed on app: I honestly don’t remember. Nothing extraordinary.

Job/Work Experience: N/A because of my father’s health…

Common App Essay: Eh, I thought it was decent. The writing was up to par, but it was about me being unable to construct a good essay. Subject matter I’m sure everyone is sick of.

EC Short Answer: I wrote about my volunteer grow, SHIP, which is very involved globally.

Why Chicago Essay: Talked as if I were a student looking back on the application process, just in general things that I loved about the school, and I mentioned what an alum wrote to me once about how I was a perfect fit and what not. I thought that would have helped.

Optional Favorite Things Essay: Wrote a little bit of an oddball one here. I’m a movie fanatic, but I talked about the process of watching movies rather than any specific movie.

Extended Supplemental Essay: Pretty kickass if I do say so myself. I really liked this one. I made my own prompt and then wrote a small narrative about the day that I discovered the book, Clair de Lune (A biography about Debussy’s life) in the back of a library and how that inspired me to take up the piano, even though I had no musical experience what so ever. I thought it was good :/

Teacher Recs (if you saw them): I had two counselor recs, one was my real academic counselor and the other was my sort of emotional counselor who knows me very well. My emotional counselor wrote as a teacher and it was absolutely beautiful…seriously we both ended up tearing up / crying as I read it lol. It was very very personal. My other one was from my APUSH/APGOVPO teacher. He has a dry humour and I think it was a good contrast.

Counselor Rec (if you saw them): She wouldn’t let me read it, but I’d assume that it was pretty good.

Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): I thought it was a great interview. We got along, I made her laugh, she said I was very ambitious and then we gave a hug at the end (I think that’s just how I am with people, but she didn’t seem to mind) and I had it at the college, which I think was cool. I mentioned how I flew out just to see campus and I had never been out midwest too…

Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): I don’t get / like these stupid things. I guess that’s cause I don’t really have one :/

Location/Person:
State or Country: PA
School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): your basic public school. filled with hoodlums and druggies but also with good kids too. No one really goes to good schools. Last year we had someone get accepted to Penn and the year before that MIT, but other than that…everyone goes local :/

Ethnicity: Caucasian (Also can someone explain the URM thing? It sounds pretty racist to me. Reverse racism, even.)
Gender: Female
Applied for Financial Aid: Yes
Strengths: I thought my essays plus the interview were the best. Really, if I have a chance at getting in during RD it’ll be because of my personality and quirkiness. I thought I fit the Chicago mold  Also my GPA and my uphill climb for AP scores should have helped.

Weaknesses: My scores, for sure. Chicago isn’t big into them, but I’m below the belt.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I’m not really a standout candidate, I guess.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted at PSU main, don’t really care about it. I’ll hear from the others in February (UIUC) and April.
Where else are you applying? University of Rochester, Syracuse U, Princeton (LOL), Brown (also LOL), UIUC obviously, and uhm vassar.

Other Factors: N/A

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I don’t know what to think right now. A little disappointed, but it was certainly something that I was expecting. Oh well. I just gotta keep trying!!!

Decision: Deferred

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I didn’t get my e-mail until later so clearly there WAS a correlation between time of the e-mail and the decision. I don’t know what to go now. Two deferrals this week, and they were like my top 2 choices.

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: MUN, Economics Club (President), Volunteering for the Obama campaign, FBLA, Soccer/Basketball, Newspaper, Arts magazine, TSA, Volunteer Counselor
[] Job/Work Experience: Soccer stuff
[] Common App Essay: Very odd style to it, about how I was a sort of synthesis between a fictional and real character - too complex and confusing now that I look back on it.
[] Why Chicago: Talked about reading Nussbaum/Friedman’s work and imagining the rigorous debates that must have preceded the texts and then how I wanted to be part of those debates - in retrospect, it sucked
[] Favorite Things Essay: About the music and books I liked - pretty boring style to it
[] Extended Essay: About a quasi-social contract between the players of a soccer team to play their respective positions and other crap like that - it sucked
[] Teacher Recs: didn’t see
[] Counselor Rec: didn’t see
[] Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): I thought it went well, but not good enough apparently
[] Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): Submitted multiple philosophy essays
1 - Discussed the implications of the possibility of a time machine on our view of personal identity
2 - Derived a thought experiment to show how the only good in the world is not in fact pleasure (mental-state or preferential state of affairs hedonism)
3 - Dismantled John Rawls’ Theory of Justice by showing the internal contradiction between the reasoning of the parties in the original position and the original position itself, then showed how equality would actually be derived from the original position and how Rawls’ 1st principle of justice was incompatible with the second
4 - Revealed the contradiction between right-libertarianism’s view of liberty and its axiom of self-ownership
5 - Showed that the paradox of voting was only true if you hold an atomistic view of individuals in a political process which should be viewed as holistic (basically, votes combined make a difference while individual votes do not - collectively rational to do so)
6 - Showed how the utilitarianism should never be able to say that a certain event has ‘maximized’ pleasure, only that s/he has raised the amount of pleasure found in a society, and a bit more, but don’t feel like going over it right now.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I actually had tears in my eyes when it finally hit me that I didn’t get in. I really loved UChicago, but I guess it was only a one way love. Honestly, I don’t know what to think…I guess I’m just not qualified enough to get into a school of UChicago’s caliber. I guess I’ll have to take a risk and turn in my essays about the problems with Kant’s Categorical Imperative, some random qualia essay, a bunch of other moral/political phil stuff, and maybe my Einstein essay. Whatever, congrats to all those who got in, you probably deserve it a lot more than I do.
