I didn’t realize how much being deferred hurts. I mean…I guess it’s good that I wasn’t flat out rejected. But blah.

Decision: Deferred

Stats:

SAT IIs: 720 ush
GPA, Unweighted and Weighted: UW 3.97/4.0 W 5.67 / 6.0
Rank: 7/274
ACT: 29 composite
APs (including this year’s): 3 euro history, 5 us history, 5 ap lang and comp, taking Physics B, Chemistry, Lit, and Gov this year.
IBs (including this year’s: n/a
Senior Year Courseload: Basically toughest possible, except for AP Calc (Which there was no way i was taking, sorry.)
Number of Apps from Your School: Just me.
Other stats (AIME, AMC, etc.): n/a

Subjective:
EC’s listed on app: Your basic stuff. Honor societies (3), hi-q team, drama club, satirical magazine etc.

Volunteer/Community Service: S.H.I.P. students helping international peace, created by me and two of my friends, we’ve done a ton of service projects. Pretty unique, I thought.

Awards listed on app: I honestly don’t remember. Nothing extraordinary.

Job/Work Experience: N/A because of my father’s health…

Common App Essay: Eh, I thought it was decent. The writing was up to par, but it was about me being unable to construct a good essay. Subject matter I’m sure everyone is sick of.

EC Short Answer: I wrote about my volunteer grow, SHIP, which is very involved globally.

Why Chicago Essay: Talked as if I were a student looking back on the application process, just in general things that I loved about the school, and I mentioned what an alum wrote to me once about how I was a perfect fit and what not. I thought that would have helped.

Optional Favorite Things Essay: Wrote a little bit of an oddball one here. I’m a movie fanatic, but I talked about the process of watching movies rather than any specific movie.

Extended Supplemental Essay: Pretty kickass if I do say so myself. I really liked this one. I made my own prompt and then wrote a small narrative about the day that I discovered the book, Clair de Lune (A biography about Debussy’s life) in the back of a library and how that inspired me to take up the piano, even though I had no musical experience what so ever. I thought it was good :/

Teacher Recs (if you saw them): I had two counselor recs, one was my real academic counselor and the other was my sort of emotional counselor who knows me very well. My emotional counselor wrote as a teacher and it was absolutely beautiful…seriously we both ended up tearing up / crying as I read it lol. It was very very personal. My other one was from my APUSH/APGOVPO teacher. He has a dry humour and I think it was a good contrast.

Counselor Rec (if you saw them): She wouldn’t let me read it, but I’d assume that it was pretty good.

Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): I thought it was a great interview. We got along, I made her laugh, she said I was very ambitious and then we gave a hug at the end (I think that’s just how I am with people, but she didn’t seem to mind) and I had it at the college, which I think was cool. I mentioned how I flew out just to see campus and I had never been out midwest too…

Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): I don’t get / like these stupid things. I guess that’s cause I don’t really have one :/

Location/Person:
State or Country: PA
School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): your basic public school. filled with hoodlums and druggies but also with good kids too. No one really goes to good schools. Last year we had someone get accepted to Penn and the year before that MIT, but other than that…everyone goes local :/

Ethnicity: Caucasian (Also can someone explain the URM thing? It sounds pretty racist to me. Reverse racism, even.)
Gender: Female
Applied for Financial Aid: Yes
Strengths: I thought my essays plus the interview were the best. Really, if I have a chance at getting in during RD it’ll be because of my personality and quirkiness. I thought I fit the Chicago mold
Also my GPA and my uphill climb for AP scores should have helped.

Weaknesses: My scores, for sure. Chicago isn’t big into them, but I’m below the belt.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I’m not really a standout candidate, I guess.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted at PSU main, don’t really care about it. I’ll hear from the others in February (UIUC) and April.
Where else are you applying? University of Rochester, Syracuse U, Princeton (LOL), Brown (also LOL), UIUC obviously, and uhm vassar.

Other Factors: N/A

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I don’t know what to think right now. A little disappointed, but it was certainly something that I was expecting. Oh well. I just gotta keep trying!!!
