Oh, and motion, I prove it was not SATs. :)

Motion personally I think your SATs are perfectly fine. In my opinion that’s not what got you deferred.

I’ll post everything later. I’m proof that scores aren’t everything.
I still cannot believe I got in. Congrats to everyone who did. To those who got deferred, I was in your shoes just a day ago (Columbia) and good luck to those who didn’t.

@motion - I also got deferred, were you the one who also didn’t send the income tax returns?

As Steinbeck always said, “go through the motions”… you were deferred, not outright rejected. Send them an additional essay and I’m sure your first semester grades won’t hurt your chances either.

yes…seems to me like anyone w/ superb sat scores got accepted…
and everyone else deferred…
and i have no idea about the rejected ppl cause they havent said much…
:)

So since people ended up posting in all the decision threads, they’ve all become very confusing (and will be for next year’s kids who try and go through them). Perhaps a mod can merge?

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: My essays spoke volumes about my ability as a student. I do believe they caused my grades to be looked past, as we all have our problems in High School and I respectively had mine with a few classes.

Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Happy I got in!

yay accepted!

Motion,

"All the kids with high test scores are being accepted…so much for test scores not mattering that much. "

We had this discussion. I requested that we not stoop to this. We all know that scores aren’t the most important thing for chicago. You have good scores. It’s all the other things in your app that matter.

I know it makes deferral hurt less to blame it on a single test, but that just isn’t true, and you know it.

I’m tired of people saying everything depends on a test. That isn’t the case. There is a correlation between high test scores and good grades. If you CHALLENGE yourself, and follow your passion and show that in your application, that will make up for a bad score. If you are applying to a competitive school and have a good score and not much else (ahem), then it’s not the score keeping you out.

I know deferral sucks, but suck it up and take responsibility for yourself.

I know that if I get deferred (from MIT, tomorrow), it’s my fault- I took the tests and wrote the essays. It’s not the admissions office lying about their policies keeping me out- it’s myself.

btw, motion, you have higher scores than I do. I have a 1490/2170.

^ I second that; I have a 2400 and was deferred. Let’s just be glad for the people that made it and hope we get in in the spring.

Well I’m stooping to that level because from the looks of things, all quantitative data had a lot of say in some of the admissions decisions that appear in this thread. Not just SATs, but grades as well. Also, ‘challenging’ yourself and ‘showing passion’ don’t help you make up for anything.

Tests and grades honestly don’t play that much of a role…

I have a 34 ACT and a 3.95 GPA…got deferred today.
With good ECs…and supposedly good essays, but I guess not since that’s probably the only thing that hurt my application, even though I did work my butt off on em. =/

Meh…honestly though. I don’t think you can “predict” who they take in, and who they don’t take, for specific reasons.

Congrats to those who got in!

Maybe there’s a difference between an extremely goal-driven and passionate student and one that can accurately depict him/herself on paper.

I have a 1460/2200 and I was accepted.
Scores aren’t the answer; there must be something else. Essays? Recs? Luck? I don’t know, but in my case, it def was not scores.

Good luck!
