[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: BOOYAH!

sour grapes make for a sucky christmas.

My son got accepted. Tremendous feeling of relief.

Basic stats:

ACT: 35 Composite (36 English, 35 Science, 35 Reading, 34 Math)
AP: Will have taken 17 AP-level courses by the end of senior year
GPA: School doesn’t calculate, but his average is an A- (around 3.7)
Essays: All of them; wrote on “how I got (not) caught.”
Type of School: Private. Don’t know how many other kids applied early to Chicago.

Hope that this is helpful. Good luck to all, and remember this: whatever happened today, things really, truly do work out in the end. My own story is evidence of that, but I won’t bore you.

OK, as a person with a 2390 and a 36, I guess I can’t say much that will convince you, motion, but seriously, there SHOULD be at least a slight correlation between test scores and acceptance - the SAT and ACT measure how well you know your stuff (and arguably your scholastic aptitude) and thus the “smarter kids” (or at least the better test takers) get the higher scores. I mean obviously, if I only had a 36 ACT, I wouldn’t get in UChicago. It took a combination of things, ECs, class rigor, nationals piano, etc. that got me in. I’m sure a lot of people would agree - the people that tend to get in tend to have higher standardized test scores because they tend to do better in general.

Motion, I have long suspected that you might tear down the Chicago forum by exploding into ‘this guy got in with bad essay topics’ and ‘how could she get in with that low score’. I encourage you to refrain. You got deferred, but clearly it hasn’t phased you, because you already have set your location to “Pitt’14!!!” I am happy for you, and I know you will succeed wherever you end up. But if you have already decided to go somewhere else, as it seems you have, why stay on the Chicago forum to complain?

[] Where else are you applying?

-Don’t really care for ivy leagues just doing it to see my options. My first choice is UIC GPPA!

[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL WHO GOT ACCEPTED. FOR THOSE THAT GOT DEFERRED KEEP TRYING YOUR BEST TO UPDATE YOUR INFORMATION AND FOR THOSE THAT GOT REJECT PLEASE DON’T GIVE UP!!!

and please don’t insult the people who have been accepted.
For example, I posted in the essay thread yesterday, but there’s no reason for you to crack down on the essay topics.
Then, you got angry about the testing preferences. Obviously tests WILL be used to a certain extent. And, as others have pointed out, higher test scores have at least some correlation with a higher gpa/class rank.
Stats matter to an extent, but Chicago is looking for more.
For example, I’m an admit but I’m barely in the top 20% of my class. Yes. That’s it. Now my class has 50 students, so I don’t even have that much competition. And I got a 1460 on my SAT so clearly numbers aren’t my thing. So, there must have been something else. I don’t know what…but they are looking for more. Please realize that and continue to work hard on the rest of your applications: something will eventually work out. Good luck!!!

I was accepted with a 3.36 GPA and an 31 ACT score. Maybe that’ll put an end to the whole “UChicago only looks at numbers” talk?

Decision: Deferred
