how nice of UMich haha. thanks bluexrhapsody281

ur deferral letter specifically says ur deferred right and nothing appeared on WA, im guessing. same situation here.

yupp. should we send in additional information (extra rec or an essay?) or should we just wait? How can we improve our chances when we are deferred? UMich is still one of my top choices so I hope they can move me the “acceptance” pile. XD

it’s monday, and i still havent received anything yet(no mail, no email, no WA). omg. when is their office open again?

DEFERRED, i’m so mad!!

ugh!! maybe i’m missing something?
maybe they hated my essays?

kjbtx456, I doubt that UMich deferred you because of essays — they really don’t put a huge emphasis on essays.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
How was your courseload? (e.g. How many APs?) How was your GPA? Remember that UMich drops your freshmen grades and any non-academic grades. They also do not add bonus points (unlike the UCs) for APs or Honors classes. If you’re OOS, the competition is also tougher to get in because UMich does prefer to admit IOS students b/c it’s a public.

UMich has resources on their site as to how they evaluate applicants. I have included them for you to read:
[ul]
[][Office of Undergraduate Admissions: Application Review](http://admissions.umich.edu/intl/eval_procedure.php) <- This is for international students, but their eval process for domestic students is very similar
[]Rating Sheet: http://admissions.umich.edu/docs/Freshman_Application_Rating_Sheet.pdf
[/ul]

If you still have questions, you can PM me. I’m more than happy to help.

Really, though, I am surprised that they deferred you. Your stats really do fit in UMich’s profile. And don’t be mad at yourself. You’ve tried your hardest in high school, so you have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.

I wish you good luck if you have other schools you’re applying to!

thanks ab2013! umm i took ap bio soph year, ap english junior year, and now i’m taking 4 aps (chem, english, stat, and calc) every other academic class is honors, so i’d say it’s not THE hardest courseload, but i think it still counts as pretty hard right… i didn’t know they don’t add bonus points for honors and ap, my school does, so i don’t know what my unweighted gpa is. in most of my classes i got a b+ or a-, the worst were b’s in ap bio and ap english but i got 5s on the exams so idk…
i think like three or four students already got in from my public hs in nj, does that affect me? i know at least two got in by mid-oct.

I just got offered a 10k/year scholarship today. How many scholarships do they give out to OOS students? I didn’t think I was going to get in to UMich, let alone a scholarship.

kjbtx456, did you just received your letter today?

^ where do u find if u got a scholarship?

Accepted OOS engineering
3.96 mich gpa at school 4.3 weighted rank like 5/600
2250 sat
790 math 2
760 chem
pretty decent ecs and all that other good stuff

whoa thats weird my post got moved before.
To Zfanatic where did u find that u got scholarship money?

Hi kjbtx456,

Your courseload seems adequate for UMich … but it’s definitely not the toughest courseload you can have … you definitely did not challenge yourself or take full advantage of what your school had to offer, but UMich is not HPYMS, so your courseload was probably not a factor in your deferral. The only explanation I have if it is one is that UMich wants to see if you can maintain your grades with a significantly more challenging courseload (e.g. 1 AP in your junior year and 4 APs this year … that is quite a jump in admissions world).

You can calculate your UM GPA this way: Drop all your freshmen and non-academic grades from your grade transcript. Each A counts as 4 points, B 3 points, etc. There is no difference between an A+ and A- in UM’s point of view.

Generally, NJ schools are well regarded by UM, because schools in NJ are usually very competitive, which makes me even more puzzled as to why they deferred you in the first place. Your GPA is good, your ECs are very good, and your test scores are above range …

Here’s another question to ask yourself: How were your teacher/counselor recs? Did your counselor know you well and did you have good relationships with your teachers? Did you work hard in classes? Were you motivated? If a teacher or counselor thought that you were a lazy, that might have played a factor … even that I would be puzzled about because your grades and test scores are pretty nice, though I do recall a UM admission officer at a campus visit saying that she would rather recommend someone with a 3.5 GPA and 12 APs for admission than someone with a 4.0 GPA and no APs.

In any case, to improve your chances, you should keep UM’s admission office well-informed about your progress this year if UM really is your first-choice and remember to have some good safeties on hand in the event UM does reject you in the end.

You probably know about this, but UM has this FAQ set up for deferred students: [Office of Undergraduate Admissions: FAQs about the Admissions Process for Deferred Students](http://admissions.umich.edu/deferred/).

I hope this helps! Feel free to reply to this thread or PM me directly if you have any more questions. I’m more than glad to help.

i applied early response to the university of michigan and i have not heard back yet. when do you think i will hear because this wait is killing me

^ i am in the same situation as you are. i still havent received anything yet(no mail, no email, no WA link). is michigan just messing me up?

i have no idea, but this is killing me. i think if i dont hear by the end of the week i might give them a call because its stupid to say youd hear by dec. 24th then have to wait after that because thats just torture

they said that they would be sent out in the mail by the 24th and the mail takes a few day. I got accepted online on the 24th and just received my acceptance packet in the mail today.

i looked on my wolverine access but i have not seen anything about a decision, where did you find it online?

their ad office opens this friday right?

i’m not sure seeing as how itd be 1/2, but i think the next monday 1/5 would be a better bet to contact them if you don’t hear anything. i’m just hoping it doesnt go that long for me.

nbonus56 and psp-fifa-fan I’m in the SAME situation. I haven’t heard a thing. I’m starting to get nervous that my decision isn’t going to be a good one if I haven’t heard yet. If you don’t mind… what are your stats? Or if you would rather what do you think your chances of getting in are? Just to know what other people haven’t heard yet… hopefully people that are most likely going to be accepted? Haha. I will share mine:

First off I’m a junior graduating early, so that might throw a wrench in things… none the less…
