General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
Congratulations to everyone accepted.

Thinking the same thing here…esp because Ohio State is throwing money at her left at right…hard to justify Michigan’s cost and attitude.

Michigan is very competitive for admission, especially for OOS. You live in Ohio ddd928. Ohio State is a fine school, but it’s not U-M. It’s not fair to compare the two schools when they are not equal. I don’t think Michigan admissions has an attitude, I just believe they have so many qualified students to consider, that it’s very difficult and time consuming.

I agree with novi. The majority of strong applicants (3.6-3.8 unweighed GPA, 1300-1400/1600 SAT and 28-31 ACT) are deferred and many of those don’t get admitted. Such applicants are generally accepted at OSU, many with merit scholarships. Michigan as an academic institution is on par with the likes of Cal, Cornell, Northwestern, Penn, UCLA and UVa.

The fact of the matter is, there are many students with excellent credentials and the financial backing that have Michigan among the top 3 or top 5 universities on their wish-list. It is not that easy for the admissions office to please everyone. In fact, it cannot even please the majority of applicants. Afterall, 60% of applicants are rejected these days, and of those that are admitted, many (mostly out of staters) cannot attend because the cost is too high.

“Thinking the same thing here…esp because Ohio State is throwing money at her left at right…hard to justify Michigan’s cost and attitude.”

Just be patient, you’ll hear by mid April.

Alexandre, while I agree that UM is competitive and swamped with applicants, the fact remains that they are terrible at communicating with and encouraging applicants compared to other equally selective institutions. I have heard repeated stories of applicants’ inability to have questions answered, or even to find contact information. My son was accepted at UIUC (comp sci engineering); in the fall we stopped short of completing his application there because it was OOS and financial markets were a mess, but the admissions office called him on his cell to check the status of his application (they have 40k+ students). This outreach caused him to reconsider. Carnegie Mellon provides step by step electronic tracking of their progress, and has sent numerous invitations to learn more about their institution during the wait period. There is no comparison with the treatment received when trying to ask a question of admissions at UM. In fact, the rep who visited my son’s school told them not to provide extra information or call the admissions office because it would just annoy them and cause their application to take longer. As an alum, I am embarrassed by the lack of common courtesy. As a Michigan tax payer, at least I know my money is not being wasted on the admissions process?

I hear you ryegye. I often complain about Michigan’s admissions office. It is not capable of dealing with the volume. This was not the case when we received 20,000 or 23,000 students. But with over 27,000 students, Michigan seems to be having a great deal of trouble. I am also involved with Cornell admissions and with 30,000 students, they too are having trouble keeping track.

But numbers are no excuse. Michigan really needs to invest in a system that works.

This said, chosing one school over another just because the admissions office is more effective is unwise.

Agreed. Does make you wonder, though, if the admissions experience is reflective of a pervasive bureaucratic atmosphere that might be expected as a student. Well, perhaps we will have the opportunity to find out. We’ll know soon enough.

Luckily, thanks to modern technology, students can cut out the middle man (the administration) and get most things done online, including class registration etc…

yeah, i’m not really up for waiting until mid-april. i planned to have my mind made up by next wednesday…

Accepted early, late on posting! Still no word from Ross.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: After getting in months ago, I am finally posting this!

i got into the school of engineering! (last november, i believe. i didnt’ discover this website 'til last week, actually)

i just put in my deposit for u of m

yay!

Hmm any rejections so far? How’s this year’s admission process going Alexandre? Will the admit rate be >40% or <40%?

I am not sure ProudeWolverine. I suspect we will end up admitting around 40% of applicants this year.

I know people in real life who have gotten rejected… There are rejections out there but most don’t want to post/don’t come to this forum.

when the heck will we hear back? haha. im getting really impatient. i dont see why it should take 4 months to hear back.

so they are releasing acceptances as well as rejections too right? i thought they are saving all the rejections till the end…

“so they are releasing acceptances as well as rejections too right?”

Yes, apparently.

I still haven’t heard anything. When is the last day to release decisions?
