OFFICIAL University of Michigan Decision - Class of 2013

Yes…they are participating in the Summer Bridge Program. I thought it was odd because we know of other kids from the same high schools who were rejected with higher grades and test scores.

According to the U-M website titled the “Comprehensive Studies Program” :

A14. The Summer Bridge Program is neither a remedial program nor a program for minority students only. The University of Michigan offers no remedial programs. It is true that Summer Bridge students are on the margins of the admissions criteria, and thus their admission to Michigan is tied to successful completion of Bridge. The courses offered in Bridge are not remedial and all give degree credit.

The Summer Bridge Program is not a minority program. This program is open to all students regardless of race or ethnicity.

That is odd. The only thing I can think of is someone up high pulling strings for them. Not fair, but it happens. And no matter what their disclaimer says, I still feel pretty sure that the reason Summer Bridge exists is so that they can accept kids from Detroit to the university - just based on the stats of the couple people on here from Detroit in the Summer Bridge program. Otherwise, it’d be downright rare for a student from Detroit to get in, because they’d have so little prep for college and standardized tests.

I guess you should really consider we all deserve good education regardless of where we live. I know its not my fault at all that my district did not provide me with the education I needed.

In a district where the average is 18, and a school where I was a highest with 22 on my first take I would think it would be more unfair if I was rejected because I was compared with students in suburbs with scores over 30.

Its obviously not a racial issue, there is 3 students attending from my school, 1 white, 1 african american and me hispanic.

I guess now it doesn’t really matter how we got in, now its about the potential we go in with and how we do at our new school.

No,I just signed into collegeconfidential…late, got admitted, early…I;ve even accepted the offer…Go BLue!

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:

I’m going to apply this fall to U of M and if I apply for engineering school but am rejected, will they offer you admittance into LSA? Or if you are rejected from engineering, are you completely rejected no questions asked?

I’m asking here because everyone here has experience with the whole process. Also, I am in a dilemma on whether to apply for engineering or LSA so this information will be helpful to me. Thanks

I’m pretty sure that if you’re rejected from the School of Engineering, you are completely rejected from UMich. The only exception I can think of is pre-admit to Ross, where you might rejected as a pre-admit, but will still have a place in LSA.

This might be the wrong place to post this, but since you guys are already talking about it: DO you think it’s easier to get into college of engineering or LSA? My major (Computer science) is offered through both colleges.

It is easier to get into LSA because LSA has 15,000 students ,while engineering has probably around 2,000. They expect engineering students to have competitive stats. Even though that is the same in any college at the University. It is more so in the college of engineering.

Ah ok, thanks. Is the chance in getting in LSA so much greater, that I should apply for LSA instead of Engineering? I’d still be majoring in computer science and I’d be taking similar courses, but I’d get a bachelor of science degree, instead of the bachelor of engineering degree I’d prefer.

My stats are pretty good(31 ACT, 3.85 UW) and I go to a really competitive high school, but my EC seriously is terrible. However, I have been involved in every computer science compitition/program my competitive high school has to offer, and got a 5 on the AP CS exam which should help me get in.

Sorry, maybe I should post a separate thread for this =/

Well disregard the post I made earlier. As you can see the stats of engineering students are higher. 3.9 U-M GPA compared to a 3.8 U-M at LSA. 1400 Median SAT compared to 1330. But the acceptance rate for engineering is clearly higher than LSA by 13%. Meaning that most people that apply to the engineering school know that they have a chance of getting in with the stats that they have. Most people that don’t think they will get in probably don’t apply. It’s different in LSA. Just my take on things. You would have a better chance in getting into LSA than in Engineering with the current stats that you posted.

Ok thanks. I think I’m still going to apply to engineering. When I looked on their site, it seems that they’re really concerned about whether or not the applicant is ready to be an engineer student (what classes they took in HS, etc) and less concerned about their ECs. Also I think they take a special look at your highest ACT math score which was my highest sub score (34). And of course I want the bachelor of engineering degree =] Oh well, I’ll just see how it goes, thanks again!

Good luck to you

Thanks! I’ll let you know if I get in a few months later xD
