I’m probably just going to use some prep books.

If you’re taking AP Bio next year, maybe you’ll want to wait for the SAT2 Bio? Barron’s is my favorite publisher…I feel like they overprepare you for the test. I would look through a book and see how much you know.

You traitor.

Yeah, for the SAT I’ll probably just use the Blue Book. I have no idea what subject tests I’m taking, which is bad.

in terms of the comment about volunteering:
volunteering is AMAZING. i spend my sunday morning in an in-patient unit at the phsyc unit at a local hospital and do art projects, skits etc. it is so much fun and you make really troubled kids smile.

it does look good for college but in no way do i do it for college. immerse yourslef in it… even if your motive is looking good for college you will be so happy you made the decision to volunteer for the same of volunteering.

I have absolutely no idea what I’m going to major in, and at this rate I’ll probably change my major 10 times.
I like writing, history, and some science (depending on circumstance)…
so thinking double major out of maybe history/neuroscience/writing/engineering? I dunno, I mean I REALLY have no idea.
Though if future job prospects wasn’t an issue, I would do some really obscure major, like medieval studies or something…haha.
oh and I would like to go to grad school, but at this point, who knows?

Nice decision. It apparently seems to be a great and rewarding one…for you.

I never intended to accuse you, or imply in any way that you were doing it simply for college, and I know you probably intended the comment as a harmless one, a simple suggestion that you think is great.

I’m just saying this “volunteering” thing isn’t for everyone, and as obvious as it appears, apparently LOTS of people these days don’t think so and instead regard it as a necessary prerequisite for an impressive resume.

@invoyable

totally agree =]

^Yeah. I know some people from my school that are HYPSMC hopefuls, and they’re spending a couple thousand dollars this summer traveling to some obscure part of the world to get volunteer hours and write down something that sounds grand and impressive. It’s so insincere though.

^I hate when people do that. It’s so ingenuine and heartless that they are “helping others” for their own selfish desires.

LOL. Sooo not this way at my school. 2011 is the most competitive right now. I wonder what 2013 will be like?

Trudat. But I don’t think that you necessarily should only volunteer if it’s ‘genuine’ and ‘heartful.’ Volunteering is volunteering-- every bit helps whether you actually mean it or not; although, I definitely don’t like it when people just do it for the hours. I personally volunteer for the fun of it, not necessarily out of the ‘kindness of my heart.’

spending money is not really how i imagine volunteering.
its pitiful.

on a separate note: anyone else dreaming of cornell?

^Cornell would be amazing. Columbia’s still my favorite, but I’m definitely applying to Cornell also.

I think I’m going to spare myself the Harvard/Yale/Princeton/MIT madness…

^ I agree about sparing the madness but then I will always wonder whether I should have gone through it and possibly end up missing out a huge opportunity.
I would also love to go to Barnard but I have reservations about being in the city.

Anyone else sooooo undecided about the entire college thing? I have absolutely no idea what I want to major/minor in, or even which college I want to go to. Ok, not absolutely no idea, but close enough. All I know is that I want to look into science and maybe business. And that I would love to go to an Ivy-caliber school, preferably on the East Coast, even more preferably in Boston. But I don’t like Harvard that much and MIT seems nice, yet I think it’d be too much. Basically, I just don’t want to stay in California.

So yeah, that sums it up for me. XD

I never said that, I was merely pointing out that community service is mostly disingenuous nowadays, from what I have observed.

I wasn’t lecturing anyone on his/her morals anything, lol, I could care less for what reason you volunteer or not, I was just having a slight problem with a previous statement that may have been misinterpreted as if volunteering is absolutely necessary.

Out of proportions…;(

…and maybe I’m just tired again for getting only 7 hours of sleep. i’m going to bed now, i haven’t stayed awake this late at 10:15 for a long while.

^ Oh yeah, sorry about that. That half of the response was responding to sqdwfe13.

Haha, there’s room for flexibility major wise. I like biomedical engineering, but I also think international relations would be cool.

I feel like Harvard or MIT would be waaaay too intense for me.

@mulberrypie: Right now I feel like I really love physics, but who knows, maybe I’ll end up switching to 12th century literature in college? But for now I think a physics/math major with maybe a minor in piano would be ideal.

I don’t think you have to declare until your sophomore year of college anyways. A lot of people end up undecided :)

My two dream schools are Harvard and MIT. I really love both campuses and they look like they would be amazing places to go to college. But chances of getting in? uhh…

It’ll be interesting to look back on this two years from now and see if we all get into our dream schools. (Of course I’m sure we alll will :p)…

^ I think you just jinxed it. Darn you. ;p

I love MIT…I dunno, I think the intensity would be kind of fun.

Me too, I’m basically applying to everything right below HYPSMC.

As far as majors go, I’m pretty sure I want to do neuroscience (as pre-med), but my interests include psychology, philosophy, writing, math, and political science so who knows where I’ll end up?.
