Official Unofficial Class of '11 Thread

^what summer programs are you all applying to?

So far we’ve seen RSI and TASP

I’m thinking about applying to a mental institution, I hear the admissions rates are low.

Haha I don’t know…by the end of junior year, I think they’ll come to my door recruiting me :p

@rachael
im absolutely a humanies person.

oops. sent too early.

i am totally a humanities person and would LOVE to get into TASP. i like to pride myself on my writing… we’ll see.

in terms of when i get out:
may 28. then 9 finals. then summmer!!
anybody have that one college they absolutely positively want to go to?
mine is cornell.

I want to go to UNC

What if i go to IMSA, where all the courses are pretty much AP/Honors level, and I only managed to get out with a 3.56 GPA sophomore year, because of its difficulty?? I want to major in medicine. What colleges should I look at? I’m scared out of my mind that I won’t get a good college, but IMSA (Illinois Math and Science Academy) has a rigorous curriculum, and most colleges look carefully at it. What should I do? I want to apply to Northwester, Duke, Wash U, U of I, UIC, and University of Pittsburgh, but I don’ know if I’ll have a chance. I’m also involved in Science Olympiad, Amnesty International, Student Council, Key Club, Mu Alpha Theta, and I work as a teacher at Kids Institute over the summer. I will also be doing an SIR (Student Inquiry and Research) in Medicine during junior year. Will I have a chance at getting a good college? This was my first year at IMSA, and that is why it was really hard. I know I’m going to try really hard next year, though.

I think you answered your own question. ;] Honestly, you’ll be fine. Just do your best. Of course you can get into a good college.

And BTW, you don’t “major” in medicine. You complete a set of premed requirements (usually biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, calculus, general physics). You can major in whatever interests you.

ditto what rachael said.

also, it isn’t all grades that get you into college. obviously they are important but you have good extra currics. do you volunteer? if not you should. also, if your grades aren’t amazing you can boost your application by having excellent SAT and SAT II scores.
i’m in a similar situation. my sophomore year grades weren’t stellar but i will work my butt off like crazy next year. they say junior year is the one that counts the most

^^^^Very true. Some colleges don’t even factor in freshmen year grades.

That’s not really a major.

Maybe I’m reading this out of context but I pretty much have major problems with this statement…I guess I should step back with a “to each its own” platitude here.

^^I know you probably hear this a lot, but don’t just volunteer for your resume…it helps your resume but come on guys…

What majors/concentrations are people interested in?

^I think I want to maybe major in physics or math…minor in piano? :]

I wanna be a doctor and am really interested in biochemistry…with a little psychology on the side. (: So I’ll probably be a biology major with a psych minor or something.

I’ll probably double major in cognitive science (with an emphasis on neuroscience) and creative writing. I also like the idea of law school… I’m horrible at career planning, haha.

I kind of want to go into biomedical engineering…I’m not positive though.

Columbia is my dream school (I am uber-jealous tsubomi :p)

^ You can’t have Columbia. I’ve already claimed her. :D

^Haha Columbia is an amazing school. I wish doing research there/taking classes was a ticket there :stuck_out_tongue: If I got in to Columbia or any other comparable school, (in what would be the epic fluke of the year) I would be ecstatic. :]

Wow, our class looks so ambitious…go 2011!

How is everyone prepping for the SAT?

I don’t even know what SAT subject tests I should take… I need to take 3 for some of the colleges I’m looking at. I took Honors Biology this year, should I take the Biology subject test? This is all so stressful.

By the way, I think the class of 2012 will be way more competitive than us. They just seem like the type that would be super-competitive, at least at my school.
