Hi guys! Thanks for all the information, it has been very helpful so far, and looking at this thread really keeps me away from slacking off!
Anyways, I have a question regarding the 30 units thing, I go to UCI and we go by quarter system, does the 30 units means 30 quarter units? Or do I need to convert it to semester units? (which would be 3/4 of quarter units?)

They are talking about 30 semester units. Which is 45 quarter units. I’m going to ucr and applied last year so yeah. I applied while under 30 credits, and so did my roomate. He got in so it’s definitely doable.

@gousc92 yeah I’ve been there already. Didn’t find much though, but thanks! I have emailed another counsellor actually, as well as to the admission office in general. Am seriously considering calling as well, but it’ll have to be an international call.

@teddygrams Haha I know what you mean! It’s just that I want to attend USC soooooo badly, and my SATs and secondary school records aren’t exactly spectacular. But my GPA is not bad now so I hope that will be taken into account even if I won’t be able to transfer credit. I am going to apply anyway. Will be submitting my application soon since I’m applying for the School of Theatre So fingers crossed!

@Cminor: Definitely consider calling if all else fails. I’m sure they will appreciate your dedication to gaining admission, so don’t feel that you’re pestering them - that’s what they’re there for! I’m not sure what country you’re in, but if cost is an issue, I know Skype and Googletalk have discounted rates for international calls. I don’t know too much about those services though because I only really use Skype and the like for video chatting. :. :(

And out of curiosity, are you required to audition for your major?

@hoopro: They are referring to 30 semester credits.

Nope! I’m applying for the BA programme so there isn’t an audition.

Do y’all think that I should retake the SATs? I took it earlier this month but didn’t manage to break 2000. 1990 (CR680 M700 W610) -.- darn writing section pulled me down… I’m in my final semester now so I’ll be busy with my projects and assignments. My GPA stands 3.9 so I’m working super hard to graduate with that or higher. Oh and my current course is in a different field so I imagine that might complicate the credit transfer…

@Cminor: I would say no to taking the SATs again because those type of tests are meant to show how you did in high school. Now that you’ve got some college under your belt, I think taking them again would be superfluous.

The time spent taking and studying for the SAT would be better served studying for the classes you’re currently in, in my opinion.

Yeah I thought so too. But I thought I should equip myself well to be a strong applicant. I never knew what the really SATs implied actually, so kudos for explaining that!

And thanks for replying so quickly too! Hahaha. I imagine that it’s an ungodly hour at your side of the world.

@Cminor: haha, no problem! And it is…2am and I’ve got
my German class at 1045. Oh joy -_-

But yeah, ECs would probably also be a better alternative to retaking the SATs. Even though there seems to be some confusions on whether or not they count, 1 or 2 meaningful club involvements couldn’t hurt :).

I was wondering why you would have classes on a saturday. Then I realised that on your side it would be Friday.

I was quite shocked when I heard that ECs wouldn’t weigh much on the application. Hopefully it’s not true. I was kind of counting on that as well. But I think they’ll still take it into account though. I think I’m pretty much set for ECs. They rank us here and we’re given a grade… so much for voluntary eh?

Haha I wish it were Saturday! I need to sleep!

Wow, you’re actually graded on your ec involvement out there? That’s insane. I’d think the whole point of ecs were just that, outside of the cirriculum. :O

Unless it’s like a requirement. My high school made volunteering a requirement for graduation. :/

@Cminor

You’re applying to the School of Theater? That’s awesome, so am I! We should keep in touch. And I feel you on the not having good enough stats during high school. The records I have from high school are definitely not good enough for admission but now I wanna transfer in as a sophomore next year. And I want to apply to either the BFA or BA program but I don’t know if I should apply to two schools (Theater and Dornsife) or just try BFA or just do BA or oasidjoduafhosdjjasd. I don’t know!

Hey guys! I’m a sophomore at Occidental College looking to transfer into Annenberg. How might a 3.3-3.4 GPA look even though that is below the average considering my grades went from a 2.5, to a 3.3, to a 3.9 the last three semesters? Hopefully I’ll be accepted, but I know it’s very competitive.

@gousc92 Hahaha yeah. Back in secondary school, it was pretty much mandatory for everyone to declare an activity and we’d be given a grade after the 4 years. But in the polytechnic where we get our diplomas people just do it because they want to, points are just a bonus. Those that don’t wouldn’t bother.

Oh and uh, do you think that my not being able to complete the writing and english requirement would weigh heavily against me? I’m actually quite alright with having to take them all at USC, even if that means 4 years - that is, if my grants are approved or if i manage a scholarship…

@ HajyPajy How are your applications coming along? The deadline is a month away! Why don’t you put one as a second choice major? Aren’t we suppose to just submit the supplement application to SoT? Are you currently majoring in theatre as well?

I don’t know if I should submit the online CommonApp supplement or just mail in whatever they request. (I’m not much of a technology person really.) Just out of curiosity, what is your experience like?

Heh, I’m sorry. I just realised I bombed you with so many questions. We should definitely keep in touch!

@Cminor: I would find a way to get that English req DONE (like even if you have to take it as a winter course or overload your Spring semester). There have been people who got SGR’ed that ended up getting outright denied because they didn’t finish it. SC really seems to be very firm on that English course.

Not trying to scare you or anything, haha, just don’t want you to end up getting screwed.

@gousc92 see the thing is, it’s a fixed curriculum so I don’t get to choose classes like that. I dont even know if they offer college equivalent english classes:( This is really bad isn’t it?

@Cminor: Oh, I see. :\ Is there like a community college where you could take an honors English course online?

I’m sure they’ll be more lenient on international students, but you’ll definitely need to talk to the counselors like asap to see your best course of action. I’d shell out the cash and call them first thing Monday morning (in your case, Tuesday? )

@teddy - lol i think i know how this process works better than you do buddy. I’m not trying to dissuade anyone from applying, just wondering why you guys have such few units. I think you guys have to realize it doesn’t matter how many units you have by the fall, it matters how many you have AFTER the first year (spring semester). And also, a 3.5 at a UC is harder than obtaining a 4.0 at a community college.

@Gousc92 I think I’ll do that. I AM going to be in USC next year, not risking anything… Pretty anxious though, gonna write down everything I wanna ask. Boy I hope he picks up…

@Cminor

I’m currently a double major in Arts&Humanities as well as Acting. But I don’t know if I should just drop my Arts&Humanities major and try to get the GE classes out of the way, or if the classes I’m currently enrolled in will be able to transfer over. I really have to talk to my academic advisor about it.

And my application is a failllll! I’m gonna spend a good chunk of my time today trying to bang those essays out. This sounds awful but I always have so much to do everyday I’ve been putting this app off. It’s pathetic, really since all I want to do is transfer out of my school and go to USC!!!

And I guess I’m gonna apply to the B.A. I just don’t know if I even have a shot in their B.A. program! I’m really nervous because I know that if you don’t do well in their B.F.A. auditions, they offer you a spot in their B.A. program. So I don’t know if I should bother auditioning or not…? Whatever… I’m so confused right now. Do you know if it makes a difference whether you mail in the supplement or not? Hahahah.

As far as experience, I don’t have too much. It’s not like I’ve had extensive training or anything, I’ve done 4 musicals, done things here and there. My resume’s really not that impressive. I just have always loved performing/entertaining that sort and I’m crazy enough to believe I could make something out of it. :]

I think I’m overanalyzing everything that’s taken into account in an application. Because I’m freaking out about what’s right or wrong and etc. etc. ETC and it’s freaking me out.

@hajypajy I think if you’re confident in auditions you should just go for it. It wouldn’t hurt… It’s really all about what you want. Like do you just want to just focus on acting or dabble on the other aspects?

I just figured that by mailing whatever they required, I wouldn’t have to submit the commonapp supplement just yet. Like the short answer bits and such. I don’t know if it works that way though…

I think you’re in a better position than I am. My experience is quite minimal really, although I have tried to be involved as much as i can. I hve a certificate in theatre performance and production, which is kind of like a minor. There aren’t many opportunities easily available here. But I’ve heard of people getting in without experience. Don’t know if it’s the same for transfers though…
