Official USC 2012 Transfer Thread

@hajypajy: I’ll look it over too if you want six eyes haha

Very, very interested in transferring to Viterbi for mechanical/chemical engineering then to petroleum. Currently a freshman first semester at Penn State. I have about a 3.4 GPA and I don’t think that it will get me in. Any ideas on what I can do to help. I’d honestly do anything to get in.

Upward Trend and good essay! I’m applying for English, where are the english majors on this thread?

@CGeresti: What she said^, have a strong upward trend, have a great essay, and get involved with EC’s!

@ScGal12: English 2nd choice! Narrative Studies first choice! :)

@ teddygrams and kakomai: Oh my gosh, I would be eternally grateful if you two would look over my essay when I finish? I won’t start working on it until December, however, but I’ll just shoot you guys a pm with it when I’m finished.

Glad this thread is starting to kick up. This will be a crazy, stressful, interesting time for us all.

So I know that no one knows what the ad coms look for, but does anyone know how to be a competitive sophomore transfer applicant? I applied last year as a freshman and was rejected. Do you think I will get rejected if I apply this year, as a sophomore transfer, since they will focus primarily on my high school records and they have already rejected me before as a freshman applicant?

@ayymeer: I think that because you’ve done some college, they’ll consider that as well as your hs records. If you can manage an upward trend this semester and some ecs and/or work experience, you should be in good shape. :)

@ayymeer: they’ll look at everything you submit, you’re obviously not submitting the exact same things as you did last year, so everything new you submit will be taken into account. being rejected as a freshman doesn’t mean they’ll reject you as a transfer, that’d cut down a laaaaarge portion of the transfers haha.

and @gousc92, I’d be happy to.

ok im in a bit of a pickle right now. i want to transfer after one year from uci, but for business administration i need to fulfill my writing requirement with a class called writing 39c. however, im taking a university studies class that fulfills writing 39c and three other GE’s, but it does not state this in my articulation agreement. any help will be greatly obliged. God bless.

@CINLEI

Hello. I am applying to engineering, aerospace engineering to be exact. And if you think you’re nervous about your stats? I’ll bet you anything that your stats are way better than mine. I’m currently at Cal State Long Beach, and with my sub-par GPA, I doubt USC will even give take my application seriously. I’m trying everything to boost my GPA, but with my 16-unit workload this semester, it seems impossible. I’m struggling to just get a 3.0 for this semester.

Anyways, I’m also in the same boat as you. I actually just continued working on my common app. As for the essays, I haven’t started yet, but I am hoping that I’ll start working on it during my Thanksgiving break since that’s when my physics and calculus midterm will be done with.

EDIT: And if you ever feel discouraged about your stats, ask me for my stats. I’m sure that’ll cheer you up.

@Gratification: hahaha, don’t be so negative! Stay positive! Just focus on a strong upward trend and doing the best you can with what you have in your control now.

@bostonbryan: that’s sort of the unavoidable stop in the road. We just can’t find out if certain classes will transfer, which is really frustrating sometimes because all we can do is ASSUME they will or won’t and make other choices based on that. Pretty much, as far as other classes, take ones you know will transfer/GEs/etc. As for that one, I’d contact USC and ask about it, but they might not even know.

I’m a freshman, currently a corporate communications major.
18 credits and projected ~3.7 GPA at the end of the semester. I can tell you it won’t be less than 3.5 though! Studying abroad right now, involved in 2 societies/clubs abroad… definitely plan to do leadership/more whilst on my actual campus in states.

36 (or 38? depends) credits by the END of my first year.

HS GPA: 3.3 uw / 4.01 UW
Rank: top 35% lol
SATs: 1700 (i know ugh terrible) / 1900ish superscore

Plan to transfer to Anneberg for Public Relations.

Do i have a slight chance, or should I wait another year?

@gratification
haha I know what ur talking about! I’m kind of in the same boat. All of these engineering and math and science courses keep fluctuating my GPA. But I’m pretty sure the admissions people know that engineering is a hard major. (at least that’s what I keep telling myself) Trying to say positive about the situation. Just keep up the upward trend and you’ll be good.

P.S. I wasn’t trying to say any other major besides engineering is not hard. That’s just my major and I can relate more to those classes. (hope I didn’t offend anyone)

Do you guys have any W’s by any chance? If so, how many??

@ ScGal12

I have one. It’s from calculus II; I got it last semester.

I’m retaking calculus II this semester, so I’m hoping that they won’t see that W. I’m really not proud of it.

I have a bad record…mainly A’s, but got an F in Calc retook it got an A, and 4 W’s…With that being said, I was hospitalized, experienced a death in a family, and have a illness im constantly fighting, im going to have to write a good damn essay.

whos on the TTP?

im going to have 3 by the end of fall… I heard that having 4 or more is sort of pushing it, thats what i heard from a counselor. But, i heard of others who got in with like 5-7 W’s… Overall, the admission process is really really random… which scares me

i just used my first W this semester for calculus 2. I’m hoping that it will be fine since this is my first one.

@ScGal11: Are you at a CC right now? I’m a legacy, but I’m not sure I’d get it if I don’t get in since I’m in a uni right now. I’m tempted to just bite the bullet and go the CC route since I’m pretty much USC or bust at this point.

@jumbo11: I know what you mean. I think I saw on a previous thread - a mother’s two sons both applied to SC, one had a 3.2 but a bunch of ECs and got in, but her other son had a 3.5 and no ecs and didn’t get in. I was tripping out. He must’ve had a seriously great essay!

what would a good gpa be in a uc to transfer to usc? im assuming it would be a bit lower than what a cc student would offer?
