Official USC 2012 Transfer Thread

What do you guys think is a good amount of time for someone to write a recommendation for you? When do you guys plan to ask? Like around December or January?

Can someone please chance me?
Im a freshman at OCC taking 27 units this semester with 1 W in the dealbreaker ENG 2 requirement (my teacher does not give out A’s so i had to drop him)
anyways my stats are
Bio/ philosophy major (either or)
HS
4.1 Weighted GPA
32 Composite on ACT (34 on math, 33 on english, science screwed me)
770 Sat II Math
730 Sat II Bio
5 on ap bio, ap lang
4 on ap euro
3 on ap art history

At OCC
3.63-3.82 gpa
as i said im taking extremely difficult classes and alot of classes

ECs
started my own personal training business (NESTA certified)
work experience (2 jobs)
All CIF preformer in track and field in HS
compete for the track and field team at OCC
planning on competing at the pac 12 level, i might be able to get a scholarship, but i wanna make sure i get in based on academics.

Im taking the 2nd english course next semester and I need to know if I will at least be a lock for a SGR because next semester is gonna be cake for me.

I don’t think any of us can say who would be a shoo in and who wouldn’t. We can only speculate. There are guidelines, but there have been exceptions as well. So the only way to get a solid answer is to apply and be as competitive as you can, even if it means spending 70 bucks.

Teddygrams put it best before and I shall quote : ‘So I wouldn’t go about the app like I have a doomsday ahead of me, cause then you’ll definitely lower your chances more than any GPA/credits could.’

@Blackrose I think there’s nothing wrong with asking early. I mean if you already have a teacher in mind, why not request one already?

i don’t understand how the people that are applying this year as sophomores and even the people on last year’s thread have soooo many credits under their belt. i came into college with none - which sucks - and i’m taking 15 for fall semester and probably around 15 if not less for spring semester. which would barely make the 30 credit minimum. like how are people taking 27 credits in one semester? that’d be impossible for anyone here.

hajypajy,
I came into college with only 4 credits but will have a total of 36/38 credits excluding that.

5 classes a semester, 6 next semester (maybe… but it’d be an additional 2 credit class for a program thing).

With how my schedule works I actually have time for more classes lol but we have a limit on how many credits we can have a semester so students don’t “overload.”

I don’t know about 27 credits a semester, tho… LOL.

@Blackrose: I’m planning on asking soon because I’m applying to two additional schools and USC’s the last application.
I don’t know if this will be like high school where my profs/teachers refused to do recs over winter break… but I usually allow a month/a month and a half for them to write so there’s no rush. ^^;

My only problem is that I don’t feel any of my professors know me enough yet or vice versa, lol.

I have a bit of a dilemma.

I am doing well in most of my classes (except one). I don’t know if I should ask my German professor for a recommendation because I have an A in that class and he recommended me for the German undergrad program. However, I don’t really go to his office hours because they don’t coincide well with my class hours. But, I do go to tutorial study hall and he’s aware of that, as well.

Or if I should ask my math teacher for one. Although I don’t have an A, I make a real effort to go to her office hours and I ask her questions pretty much all the time. I have never missed a class and I always sit in the front.

I don’t know which professor would be a better bet. Since I’m not particularly talkative in any of my classes. >_< Advice please!

Also, would an academic advisor be a good bet, too? I figure that they’ll only want a professor’s rec?

Hm…on the articulation history for UC Santa Cruz, NONE of the transferable courses for the Diversity are offered this year. UC SC has had a lot of budget cuts lately. Is it really bad if I don’t have the diversity requirement? Will that severely hurt me? I will have the Writing requirement and hopefully the Western Culture and Global Culture (I and II) completed and for spring I will be doing V (arts and letters) requirement.

bearterritory3: 27 credits definitely sounds like a lot, haha. Be sure you’re not counting credit gained before HS graduation. Plus those high school stats are great to begin with, you don’t even technically have to be taking that many. Chance-me’s are always completely random though.

@kaikomai: It shouldn’t matter too much if you don’t have diversity done, they said they don’t expect you to have all GenEd’s done because they do want you to take advantage of their own Core Curric. Just take whatever relevant courses you can.

@Cminor Thanks for the quote!

What are popular courses that fulfill GE V: Art & Letter beside all English Literature courses ???

@hajypajy and @teddygrams im actually taking 32 units lol (2 untransferrable units for chem 106 cause we have to take it at scc with chem 1a and 3 untransferrable units for track) i work really hard and I don’t want the fact that my 3.7ish gpa is taken for granted without consideration towards my workload. Do you think they would consider in my workload in my admissions decision? The reason I am taking so many units this year as my freshman year is to try to transfer into berkeley as a 1 year transfer (By skipping sophmore year and going straight into junior standing with 60+ units). I’m just hoping that I at least get into USC/UCLA if UCB rejects me.

I’ve got a question… since I’m in a rather strange position.

I had really great grades in a very competitive high school up until my last semester in 10th grade, and lots of things happened, in which I completely spiraled downwards academically and personally (which I have valid explanations for,) and in my junior year I completely reached a rock bottom. I decided I needed a complete change, so I took the GED and took my first semester at a CC the summer after 11th grade.

All of the courses I’m taking are transferable, and I have maintained a 4.0GPA (and am fairly confident this GPA will stay.) Because of budget cuts, there aren’t many classes available, so I am consecutively taking classes from two different CC’s. By the time of application, I’ll have over 40 transferable units and all of the required GE’s completed EXCEPT for math (I’m applying as a creative writing major and will take math in my spring semester.)

I know for sure I’ll be getting two letters of rec (from my CW professor and English professor) as well as one other supplementary letter from a nonprofit organization where I’ve put in hundreds of hours, if you only count what I’ve done since this summer.

I guess my question is how much will not having a high school diploma and SAT scores affect my chances? I do have AP test scores I can submit from my sophomore year of hs (but I’m not sure that that really matters?) And I’m assuming with over 40 units, they won’t really check my extremely crappy high school record, right?

Thanks for any help or advice! :)

@blackrose21: Yeah, I’d put engineer as the first if I were you. You would probably have a higher chance of getting into that? I was debating on Chemical Vs. Computer Engineer  not sure… cause both are not bad and I don’t mind either one of them.

@blackrose21: I’d say a good time to ask is the last week of November or the first week of December. That way you won’t be overwhelmed during Finals and your professor won’t be either! :)

@Cminor: hmm, in terms of your essay, your suppose to connect them with your ‘voice’ but the majority of what they’re looking for is getting to know you, not necessarily through your ‘voice’ but by how you can communicate something about yourself that is unique in some way and stands out from the rest of the crowd. i mean you can definitely use your voice in the essay with formality of course though

so from what i’ve read, we’re not entitled to include our scores we’ve received on standardized tests because we are transfer applicants?

Question: Someone from the Viterbi admissions told me that they look for 4-5 classes a semester from a transfer. My spring freshman semester consists of physics:mechanics, chem 2, chem 2 lab, intro to macroecon, english, and calc 2. Would it look bad if I dropped econ for a phys ed to lighten the load a little? My current schedule is 18 credits and would change to 16.

I have a question about double majoring. Are there certain schools within USC that it is difficult/impossible to double major between?

I have a question about the common app for USC:
In the “Education” section of the application, there is a sub-section for “Colleges & Universities”. It says the following:

“If you have taken any courses, including online courses, at another College or University for credit or have attended any enrichment programs hosted on a college campus since 9th grade, check this box”

I currently attend UC Santa Cruz. Is that what i would put? or is it asking if I took college classes from 9th grade until graduation of highschool?

Applying for transfer next year into the animation/digital arts program (emphasis in cgi/vfx) in the school of cinematic arts. So far got a 4.0 at my college, hopefully I can keep it up. Although a professor at USC i’ve been talking to is saying the portfolio is the most important factor. Can’t hurt to keep a 4.0 though.

anybody else going for animation?

I am uncertain whether to put my high school grades under secondary school grades in the commonapp, I do have over 30 units but i was wondering if it would look bad if i didnt fill that space up?
