thanks for all the feedback you guys. i think that’s what i’m going to do. i’ll ask towards the end of november/ early december, that way they have time. also how many of you are using a high school teacher as a recommendation? I have 1-2 teachers that know me a whole lot better than my college professors because I took them for a good portion of my high school years. Are we allowed to do that, or is it frown upon?

Hey guys, I was wondering how bad it looks getting a C in ochem. My major is chemistry but right now my teacher doesn’t even curve the tests but drops one which is still hard… I would be getting A’s in everything else this semester but that C will kill me I think… I’m still applying to USC but I’m hoping my chances aren’t diminished by that… Also, would it be helpful to get letters of rec’s?

@ jumbo11: I’m going through the same predicament too in Cal I. I have a high C, right now but I’ve got one more test and the final to take, so I’m hoping I can make a B. I calculated my gpa with a C in, and I still meet the average transfer gpa. I suggest you do the same and see what you get. But a C in class that you’re majoring in may look a little iffy, idk. Go ahead and get recommendations if you can, they never hurt lol.

Anybody trying for Dornsife’s Neuroscience B.S.?

@ BlackRose21: Are you entering as a sophmore? If so, they do tend to look at your HS performance more, so getting a rec from a HS teacher wouldn’t be bad, but try and get one from a college professor if you can.

@ kaikomai: I think it’s asking for any college credit you gained in HS.

Oh yeah, since I have less than 30 credits, I have to submit my test scores, which aren’t in USC’s middle 50% range (made an 1800 on SAT, 27 on ACT), so I’m taking them again this December. You guys think that will help, especially since my HS gpa was poor?

Sorry for the third degree here, but do you guys know if we have to submit that school report (which our HS counselor would have to complete), or can we just have our registrar’s send official HS transcripts to them without the school report?

@ CluelessBelle
No I’m currently a sophomore so I’ll be transferring as a Junior. Yeah I might do that but its going to be harder to get teachers from college just because a lot of them I’ve only had once, but I’ll figure something out. haha

But that’s a tricky one. I heard that admissions do look at you SAT but its not like a big factor cause the purpose of the SATs is to estimate how well your going to do in your Freshman year. So I wouldn’t retake them if I were you. The important thing is how well your doing in college now.

@smalone3d
We’re the only animation people here. lol

@ BlackRose21: Lol, I already signed up and have been studying for months now. My HS gpa was ridiculously low (because I was lazy, not stupid), so I don’t want that to hold me back. I need every other part of my profile to be strong so I can stand a better chance. And I don’t feel like they’ll think one semester of grades is enough to show them that I’m a worthy candidate. That’s how it was for me when I was applying as a freshman, so I’m going to do everything I can to increase my chances, lol.

Also, your best bet for a recommendation is an English professor. They’ve read your writing, and those classes tend to be smaller, so he/ she might “know” you a little more personally.

@ CGeresti: I don’t think that would matter, but maybe try and take an academic class instead of phys ed (unless you really want to). You could take an intro class like intro to psychology, sociology, philosophy, anthropology, etc…
But whatever you feel you’ll be able to handle and make good grades is ultimately best.

hi, i am planning on transferring to usc fall 2012 and was wondering what do you think the chances of getting in with a 3.3-3.4 gpa? plus extra curriculars and also being on the deans list for each semester?

@blaccbeauty: Idk, you really can’t tell with USC, if you look at the 2011 decisions thread you see people with a range of gpas. 3.500 is the average transfer gpa, according to USC’s website.

So, not trying to change the subject or anything, but did anyone happen to go to Transfer Day today?

i actually emailed the usc counselor for my region and she said test scores were not mandatory to submit for transfer students…? confused…

@hajypajy I think I’d send them anyway… because the website says so. Plus, if they aren’t mandatory they couldn’t possibly hurt you more than they could help you…
Right, right…? LOL. (completely not sure)

Off that subject, how do you send in recommendation letters? Through mail, or do we upload it onto commonapp? There’s an ‘upload document’ section for Annenberg but I’d assume that would be for the one-page essay about why I want to major in Communications.

@lullabies I guess so… Hahah if only my ACT scores were above average which they aren’t. I feel like if I were to admit them they would only really hurt my chances to be dead honest… But I wanna see everyone else’s sort of take on this. Because I obviously don’t want them to think I’m irresponsible for not sending them in. And good call on the admission letters! I really wanna know how they work as well.

I went to a transfer day and the head of transfer admissions said unless stated for the major you’re transferring to (like Cinematic Arts requires 3), you do not have to send in a letter of Rec. If you do, they’ll read it but the only reason it’s there on the app is because commonapp has it. Also said that the “30 credits and we won’t look at your HS record” applies to the end of spring. You’re supposed to put your units in progress before submitting so they’d know that you’ll have 30 credits before enrolling at USC. I’d be more willing to trust him than the website.

@hopefulgraduate1: Ok, it’s good that there’s confirmation on the letter of rec thing. Thank God the 30 unit thing applies to the end of spring. That’s one less thing that I have to worry about!

Well damn, that sucks! I’m already retaking the SAT and ACT in December. Oh well, hopefully that will just give me an extra edge since I only have 13 hours (17 including my AP Bio credit).

Whew, thank goodness that rec isn’t mandatory, but I still have to get one for the other school I’m applying too :(

Do you think it’d look bad NOT sending them in? My SATs were terrible for USC standards so I mean by not sending it, or even sending it, it’d be clear that your test scores sucked enough that you don’t want the school to see them.

@hajypajy has a point… It feels like it’d hurt one’s chance if it’s under their standards if you do send them. Hmmm?
