Hey all USC transfer hopefuls! I’ve been a lurker around CC for awhile now. I didn’t get into USC for my freshman year(3.6UW GPA, 1950 SAT, 10AP’s) but I’m hoping to transfer in as a sophomore with a major in biomedical engineering. I was just wondering but does anyone have the transfer rate for the year of 2011? I’m rather curious about how well the students before us did.

Question…do you guys think USC will accept official, sealed high school transcripts if I were to send it in? I decided to get like 5 copies and keep them with me, but now I’m not even sure if they’ll take them :/.

@corrupt

The transfer rate for 2011 was 16.6%.

@jibnny
I don’t think gpa is the deciding factor in what makes an applicant stand out. I think it’s very important to stand out in your essay and short answer questions. Make it personal…show what you’ve experienced in your life that is relevant to your major/usc. Also, do research on usc and the specific programs you are interested in. In my short answers, I included usc’s mission statement and I also included research work done at usc in the kinesiology field. Show what you know about USC and why it’s relevant to you. Good luck :)

jgirl06: I don’t know where you got that transfer rate number, but it seems fishy considering transfer brochure says the admit rate was 26% for the 2009-2010 year.

http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/1011/TransferringToUSC_2010.pdf

my b…it’s 27% haha and the average gpa was a 3.7

So do you guys know where the personal statement is? Or is it the generic “Why do you want to transfer” one?

The latter. USC’s using the Common App this year

finally back and so glad to be done with finals! lol

@gousc92:
yeah I’m pretty sure they would accept them. Did u get it when u had all of your final grades on there for graduation?

@Blackrose21: Yeah, I got official, sealed transcripts because I go to school out of state. I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of phoning them when I finally send in my application.

Man, I’m really nervous now. Finals are done and I’m supposed to be working on my application! Having a bad case of writer’s block >_<

@gousc92: o ok then it should be ok. I’m kind of glad u said that because I totally forgot that I need to get transcripts from my high school. I should probably do that over break. lol But yeah I know what you mean I need to also start on my application too. The hardest part is the essays.

Have you filled out everything else besides that?

Do you guys think they account for what school/major you’re currently in as a reflection of the amount of work you do and the rigor of your classes?

For example, a student enrolled in 3 relatively easy courses a quarter at a JC with a GPA of 3.8 versus a student enrolled at a UC in 4-5 courses a quarter with a GPA of 3.6.

Do they take into account what standing you are? Such as your GPA transferring as a Sophomore versus the GPA of other Sophomore applicants, or is it simply thrown in the transfer pile with other transfer students?

And lastly, how much higher or lower do you think that the average GPA for admission to the Viterbi school is than the stated average of 3.7 for overall transfer?

can we still receive scholarships as a transfer?

it’s probably a little late too…but can we schedule interviews for our respective schools within sc?

Do you guys know where I can send my high school transcripts to?
I don’t have an address

Done with finals, gonna start on this USC app soon Fight on! Are letters of rec needed? I read somewhere no letter of rec this year because of common app?

when calculating your GPA, would that be your cumulative GPA for the whole year you’ve been at your respective CC or university?

@blackmamba2410 - letters of rec arent required, but including them can’t hurt!

@jibnny - yeah, you’d put your overall gpa. :)

i have a kind of…low GPA from fall quarter. but by the time our apps are due, i would only have my first quarter grade. but since i have to send in winter quarter grade reports and probably my spring quarter report, will they be looking at mainly my fall quarter grades as my GPA or use all of my quarters to determine my GPA? i’m worried because i would really like to make up for fall quarter’s GPA with winter quarter’s and if i maintain a 4.0 GPA winter quarter, i’ll have a decent GPA.

@jibnny: IMO, I would just send in my app because I’m assuming they won’t request your grades right away. And even if they do, you just send in your grades, then when winter comes out, send an updated transcript. Also, if possible, you should explain your fall grades in your application. I’d shy away from mentioning that you’re looking to get a 4.0 gpa in winter because if you don’t, it’ll kinda fall flat. But it’s totally your call.

And they will look at everything. USC loves upward trend, which is what I’m counting on because I really screwed around in high school. -_-

Basically, don’t give up without even trying. USC accepts all GPAs all the time.

I just got my fall semester grades back and I got a gpa of 3.73. People can get into Annenberg (Communication) with this gpa, right? I’m a little nervous :/

I’m sure I’m going to get about the same, if not, better next semester.

I know I should call USC myself, but it’s sunday and the wait is killing me so…for the math requirements they want from you, does it have to be college algebra or higher? My major does not require algebra or calculus, so I am taking a statistics course next semester. I also read on one of the USC links for the Communication major, and it said that for Comm majors, they “recommend” that they take statistics. But I keep seeing how they require math at least college algebra level. Would statistics fulfill that math req? I should probably call them…
