Official USC 2012 Transfer Thread

@BlackRose21- That’s correct!

Yeah, I keep hearing different things about ECs when it comes to USC. I think they probably consider it in the context of your whole application, but I can’t say definitely if it’s a deal breaker. I’m heavily involved in ECs this year, so I’m trying to be optimistic, lol.

I was supposed to be be studying but I came on here to check any updates and of course I got inspired by this thread as always so now I’m going to hit the books and study my a** off :slight_smile:
Goodluck to us all!
Oh and @Nicjam, you and I are on the same boat except I can’t be a broadcast journalism major anymore cause Annenberg requires less than 36 units for journalism admission (I think pr too but not sure) and I’ve gone a little over now starting my sophomore yr :frowning: So applying for creative writing and I can apply to annenberg once I’m there as told by a USC advisor so let’s see how that turns out. Just wanted to let you know incase you weren’t aware.

How does housing work for transfers?

@douglovesmovies: HEY ME TOO! I shake at the thought of doing that 5 min video. Gonna try and do an animation, old school style drawing everything on paper :confused: Let me know how your apps are going I’d love to talk to somebody who’s in the same boat as me!

@ fabregasfan:
yeah i need to look more into that. i’m applying to the animation program and I know I have to send in something as part of my portfolio. I’ve just been so busy with school that I haven’t been keeping up with it. also just a heads up if ur interested there is suppose to be an information session for transfers and other undergraduate students that are interested in the school of cinematic arts. i believe its like an online chat but you have to hurry and make a reservation.

Applying as a junior and my major’s sociology.

Does anyone know if their sociology program is extremely difficult to get into? I know UCLA’s program is impacted/difficult to get into, but my cousin who attended USC, both for undergrad and grad, said the sociology department was quite easy to get into at SC, at least relative to others. I have a crappy GPA, but a rather good list of ECs, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

im on the same boat as you stressy except im a chem major. keeping my fingers crossed at all times…

@jaajaa20 my counselor told me that when Annenberg states they only allow 36 units, they mean only 36 units will transfer. I have to double check on that one. Would that apply for communication majors as well? I need to double check with that.

@Stressy - I don’t think SC’s sociology is impacted at all, at least in comparison to Annenburg and Marshall. I think you’d have a good chance.

Is anyone else here applying for sophomore standing? My HS grades were dreadful and I know they’ll count, but I’m hoping my upward trend works in my favor. =]

@Jumbo: Ah, good luck. Just let them know how much you want it- don’t sell yourself short. At least this place serves as support.

@ Gousc92: Thank you lmao. That’s absolutely encouraging. : ) Good luck to you!

Edit: Has anyone turned in their supplement yet and how did you feel about the short paragraph?

@Nicjam I don’t think so I clarified it with Annenberg admissions and they pretty much said if over 36 units (transferable ones), you’re not competitive. Luckily, it doesn’t go for comm majors, just journalism and I think pr. What would you do if you went over 36? Go for comm or a major outside Annenberg? I’m still kind of debating :/

@jaajaa20
How would you not be competitive if you have over 36 units? I would think the more you have the more completive you are on you application?

Also the whole units thing confuses me. I always go by credit hours. How does the units system work?

@jaajaa20 Well Im going to double check with Annenberg at transfer day on October 21st because after this semester I will have 51 units. I have been following the articulation agreement with USC and my community college. Worst case scenario, I would apply as a comm major that way Im still in Annenberg. Ill definitely let you know when I get more details.

@BlackRose21 I would think having more units would make the applicant more competitive. Wouldnt that set me back as a student if I only took 36 units?

@nicjam:
I don’t know if it would set you back. I’m still trying to figure out how the unit system works versus the credit system. But I would try to talk a bit more than 36 cause if you just take 36 your hoping that all of those classes would transfer over which it might not and u would have less than 36 in the end.

Really? I’m excited for my 5 minute short! I’ve watched a countless number of accepted visual samples, and they give me hope if you catch my drift haha. Send me a private message and I’d love for us to help each other out. It’s nice to have someone stressed out with me haha.

I’m applying as a sophomore for fall of 2012! I’m attending Michigan State University and I hope I get in! The essay prompts seem so generic and boring though. I know I have to do a ton of brainstorming in order to give my essays some flair.

@hajypajv - Yay! I’m not alone, lol. I agree with you on the essay prompts, I wish they had retained the ones they used last year. :. What major are you looking to declare?

@gousc92 -

I’m not too sure about what major to declare but I know I’d apply to Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences. The major I’m currently in at MSU is called Arts & Humanities, a liberal arts major in the residential college of arts and humanities (yes the major’s the same name haha weird). Since it’s a fairly new college a lot of people consider it a bs major… And after the first month since classes have begun, I can’t help but agree to a certain extent.

I feel awful admitting that but I just don’t know how I’m gonna take this major and incorporate it into the working field after I graduate. Most kids double major in it but I’ve always felt that USC offers a ton of opportunities to get hired in the California area which I want to be able to do.

I haven’t found a ton of info or success stories about sophomore transfers to USC on the site (I’m pretty new)! Hopefully you and I both get in!! Where are you attending atm?

@blackrose21, yeah I understand what you’re saying, it just doesn’t make sense. When I called though, the lady told me it has to do with graduation, like not graduating on time, don’t remember exactly but @nicjam, you’ll probably get the answer again.

Here’s the link to transfer guidelines.

http://annenberg.usc.edu/Home/Prospective/Undergraduate/Jour/~/media/Admissions/Transfer%20Guidelines%206-10-11.ashx

and apparently, communications and public relations have a maximum of units preferred as well, 64.
