@hajypajy - Yeah, I just put undeclared for my major. I am currently a Psych BA major at Arizona State but I really am not excited about it. I just feel that this major is lacking severely in hard science applications, something I’ve been interested in doing ever since high school. I kinda wanted to explore a bit before declaring my major if I get into USC. I know that no matter what route I choose, I’ll be getting a top notch education anyways. :)

There are a few successful sophomore stories on here, you kinda have to dig around a bit, but they are out there! How were your high school grades? Mine were terrifying! I think I’ll probably end up getting SGRed. :

regarding sophomore transfers, don’t be discouraged or feel as though you’re at a disadvantage compared to junior transfers. my advice is that you shouldn’t waste any time taking unnecessary classes (obviously) and make sure to get those pre-reqs completed. finish pre-reqs, take a couple GEs, and everything should be fine as long you can maintain a 3.7+ gpa and write pretty decent essays. As far as extra curriculars go, if you don’t have any ecs at all i’m sure it could hurt you, but as long as you have some decent ones you should be fine. try to join an organization your first year on campus just so that you could have one ec that isn’t from high school.

Hi everyone,
I’m new and I’m deciding on transferring to USC as a junior next year Currently I go to UCR. I was just wondering, do we need to finish all the major pre-reqs and GEs before transferring in? I emailed the advisor but he hasn’t emailed me back yet. I’m going to try to transfer in as a psychology major, except I’m missing 1 pre-reqs that’s not offered here.
I’m missing PSYCH 274 Statistics I and this is what it says:

** It is recommended that no more than two upper division psychology courses be taken prior to the completion of PSYC
274 and PSYC 314L.**

I’m not quite sure what that means… but I don’t know how to take a class that is not offered here and I’m not sure what to do about that

Sorry for the double post but it won’t let me edit that one =( Anyways, I just meant to ask… how much will it affect my chances of getting in if the major pre-reqs are not met? I haven’t finished my GEs either but I have a very strong GPA (4.0) and good ECs. Thanks for the feedback

Yeahhhhh I feel like they’ll request for my spring grades as well. Mine in high school were not spectacular, trust me hahaha. I got a 3.6 freshmen year, then 3.8 sophomore, 3.7 ish junior year, then senior year I kinda sorta did awful (got a C in calc… never again), so I don’t know what I got senior year but my cumulative is like a 3.6 or so? Sorry for the vagueness I don’t know exactly. I took two APs my senior year and I didn’t get a 4 or a 5 on either of them sooo I have no credits coming into college.

I don’t wanna say I’m that terrible of a student or that I don’t meet USC standards… I just don’t think I proved myself enough in high school and I feel like that’ll hurt my chances a lot when I apply. I’m really nervous!!!

PS I don’t wanna sound iggggnant but what would their pre-reqs be and what are GEs? I wanna know if my classes right now would fit in their pre-reqs. I’m almost certain they would but considering I’m part of a new branch of a residential college in my university I don’t know if the credits I get in these new types of classes would transfer over. Did that even make sense? hahahahha

@hajypajy - Oh wow! That’s way better than mine, I completely bombed my HS career. Granted, towards the end, it got marginally better (I think I got a 3.6?), but my overall was extremely low. I don’t even think I have the guts to admit it on here, lol. But I was able to get a 3.8 my first semester, and my classes, with the exception of College Algebra, are pretty easy, so I’m sure I’ll be fine this semester. =]. Fingers crossed!

I totally understand what you mean. Like my high school record was laughable. I’m completely grateful that USC is willing to allow us to prove ourselves in our college careers!

Pre-reqs vary according to major, like my Psych major’s pre-req was Psych 100 and I think Statistics. USC has articulation histories with a lot of 4 year institutions, so you can look your school’s history and cherry pick your schedule that way. That’s what I did for this year so I can be sure that they all transfer.

GEs are like General Education requirements that all USC students have to fulfill. I think there are 4 we can do outside of SC, and 2 more we do if/when we get in.

Here’s the site I used to find my articulation history, figure out which courses transfer and all that good stuff:

I will be applying for a B.A. in Human Performance…any others out there?
I’m planning on becoming a Sports psychologist and want to transfer as a sophomore.

Also had only a 3.77 in highschool
played club soccer and tried getting recruited there, but broken nose and injuries refrained that from happening
also was
school vice president, soccer captain, nhs, and all that good stuff…
currently at a CC doing work to transfer after freshmen year!
hope chances are good.

Thanks for the website! That helps a ton. Some of the classes I’m taking don’t show up there but I guess I’ll just have to talk to an admissions officer or something to explain my situation. And some of them did show up which is really good.

How are you planning on telling your academic advisor about transferring? It just kinda sucks for me because mine has so much faith in my residential college and I don’t know how to break it to her without offending her a little bit… Haha. Also with that, do you know if undergraduate transfers are supposed to get a letter of recommendation(s)? Cos that’ll be a toughie too… Trying to ask my prof’s for one I mean. Hahahhaha. Whatever. I don’t wanna start stressing about it now. Lemme know how your essays go btw!!

I transferred to USC’s School of Cinematic Arts this fall as a Writing for Screen and Television student. I’m a freshman all over again thanks to my program. I know how unique this program is and if anyone else is going to attempt a transfer into this they should drop me a line! I’ll be happy to answer questions and look over your materials.

I’ll also answer any other questions regarding USC/SCA if I can answer them…

Good luck to everyone! I’ll be stopping by occasionally, as my boyfriend is going to attempt a transfer into CLAS Fall 2012.

Same here! I just transferred in this fall as a Junior in Marshall. I still lurk around and wouldn’t mind help answer questions in regards to Marshall or USC in general.

Seems like there’s always a ton of Marshall applicants and I know how helpful it is to get advice/info from someone who’s already been there…so I’ll try to answer to my best ability.

@hajypajy - No problem! And yeah, just be sure to talk to your admissions officer about that. Like for mine, the only languages that showed up were Japanese and Chinese, but when I consulted him, he assured me that my German should transfer just fine for that requirement. =]

I just actually switched my major today to an Exploratory track so I’m allowed way more flexibility in building my schedule, as well as being able to get rid of some pesky sciences early on. My new academic advisor is very understanding, so I think that I will break the news to her around early Jan, although I hinted to transferring today. I’m toying with the idea on getting a letter of rec from her. And yes, I’m almost 99 percent sure all undergrad transfers need at least one letter of rec, at least that’s what it states according to their common app. I’m nervous about that, too! I’ve always been incredibly shy, but I’ve been establishing a relationship with 3 of my teachers. I’m thinking that I’ll end up asking my math teacher as I’ve been really working hard in her class.

I will definitely! Did you fill out your application at all yet?

@CrownoftheSea and sydneyral - First of all, congratulations on being accepted! I actually have a general question to ask you two - how are you finding the coursework load in comparison to your previous schools? Has the transition been smooth for you guys?

I’m planning to transfer next year as a sophomore but I have a question
The requirement to complete English and Math is before enrollment at USC right? My CC had all of those classes fill up by the time new students were allowed to sign up for classes, however I am currently taking a full load of courses that fulfill requirements for USC’s GEs. I’m assuming I’ll get a SGR?

@gouscc92 - It feels like it’s the same difficulty more or less…some classes are easier, and some classes are harder. The easy ones are not much easier and the hard ones aren’t much harder.

The classes are actually not as bad as I thought they’d be. However, I think I’m studying about twice as much as when I was in CC. I have homework almost everyday, plus lots of readings. I think if you keep up with the work, you’d be fine. It’s almost impossible to procrastinate if you want to do well…unless of course you want to live in the library days before a test…like right now, for example.

@hopefulgraduate1 - I know that the English requirement is VERY important and if you don’t complete it in the Spring, you’ll probably end up getting denied. It happened at least once on the previous transfer threads.

Are you not in any math right now, or the math you’re in isn’t transferable? And may I ask what major you’re applying to?

@crownofthesea and syndeyral - Oh, ok, thanks very much for your input. I’m always curious to see how adjusting to 'SC life works for people.

Another question - how did you guys manage your housing situation? I know from previous threads that housing is pretty hard to get for transfers… :

I completed Calc 2 in HS but I’m currently not in a math class. And is it the full English requirement I have to complete (CCs divide it into two classes) or is it possible to do Spring and Summer to finish before I enroll if accepted?
Planning to apply for music industry and I’m taking some prereqs for it though if I apply and get rejected I can’t apply again to Thornton

I just filled out the general info on the common app hahaha. Haven’t begun my essays but you needa help me stay on track so I don’t do it last minute! HAHA. What english requirement are you talking about by the way? I’m in a writing class but my major has different requirements from the rest of my university so I’m hoping that they’ll count for something… And gahhhhhhhh I don’t even wanna think about housing right now.

@hopefulgraduate1: Hm, I think your best best is to find out the honors English courses and see the ones you can get into that fulfill the Eng requirement. Like my school has Eng 105 and USC’s articulation history said that it covered their Eng req. In retrospect, I probably should’ve done it that way but that’s neither here nor there.

@hajypajy - Haha, of course! I know around Feb 1st, I’ll just be super nervous! And my birthday is like 4 days after…I will NOT be able to celebrate! I’m in Eng 102, which is the one USC wants. I’m more nervous for my next semester, I’ll be venturing finally into the higher maths! Arg! How many credits are you taking btw? I’m taking 16.

Housing for transfers depends on when you get accepted. This past year it got full like around first week of July. The earlier you get accepted and send in your deposit the more likely you’ll get what you want. I sent mine in like in mid June and basically got dumped in whatever was available at the time
