Official USC 2012 Transfer Thread

@gousc92
I’m taking 15. I’m in LL 301 (Korean), RCAH 111 (humanities writing), RCAH 192 (diff. class through my major like a freshmen seminar), RCAH 201 (another humanities class), and THR 101 (acting). I think second semester i’m enrolled for 14 but I wanna be able to meet the 30 credit criteria so I’ll have to take up another class. Do you think they’ll focus a lot on high school career since I won’t have 30 by the time I apply?

@hajypajy -
Yeah, they’ll probably end up focusing more on your high school stats + SAT/ACTs. It’s the same deal for me…I’ll have 25 credits completed after this fall. The darn unit cap at my school kept me from taking Japanese in addition to my other classes >_<.

Do you have an idea of what you plan to take next semester? I already have 4 classes, 3 transferable on my sched.

@gousc92 nooooononononoooo that sucks. I don’t like the sound of that. I’d want them to take my college career into account too. :T cos im trying really hard this year to maintain a 4.0! :] And i’m in some more classes that aren’t general education classes but are required through my major and another theater class and a statistics class. I might take up another elective. boo.

@hajypajy - Yeah, I know! I can understand their logic bc in the grand scheme of things, less than 30 credits is not really enough information to make a decision. At least by including hs records, they can kinda get a better overall picture on who we are as applicants.

And I know, same here! I should probably start working on my essay due tomorrow, lol. It’s just a first draft so it’s not that big of a deal, but nevertheless. :P

@ gousc

My CC has us take 300 before 301, which fulfills the English requirement. I’m still trying to see if I can late add the English course I’m waitlisted for but I don’t know that it’ll work.

I know that for admissions to focus on your college record only you have to have 30+ semester credits but do you think having 25 units (with a 4.0) at the end of fall may get me a SGR instead of a rejection if my HS grades were average? There was a reason for my grades (hospitalization/surgeries) but idk if that’s enough. To add onto that, would it be worth retaking my ACTs if I only got a 30 originally?

I have too many questions and my transfer day session isn’t until November :/

@ hopefulgraduate1:
I wouldn’t retake you ACTs. I was asking one school that I was interested in transferring at one time and they said the whole point of the ACT/SAT was to have an estimate of your performance your Freshmen year. Also a lot of places say they need it as part of protocol but they really don’t focus to much on it. It really your new grades in college and they will probably compare them to your high school grades to see how much progress you have made.

@hopefulgraduate1 - I second what BlackRose21 said about the whole ACT/SAT thing. And you got a VERY good score on it, so I don’t think you should bother retaking it.

And imo, I think if you finish 25 at the end of fall, and you apply around Jan stating what classes you’re currently in (basically, that you’re taking Eng), there’s a good chance you’ll be SGR-ed. I just think that if you can prove that you’re doing English or plan to, you should be ok, esp considering how well you did in HS.

But yeah, definitely bring it up during transfer day. I’ve only based my opinion on what I’ve seen happened on the 2008-2011 Fall transfer threads (yes, I’m aware I have no life, lol.)

@gousc92

dang you guys are making me look sooo bad! My ACTs were not even up to par. I’m a terrible standardized test taker… All this info is tweaking me out hahaha. I was hoping that if I finish 15 by the end of fall semester and do really well and then apply by January that I’d be SGR’ed. Who knows, who knows…

Hello fellow transferers! This is my first post though I’ve been lurking around forums in cc for the longest time… I am looking forward to the process - and hopefully make some friends:)

Is anyone applying for - or has applied for theatre as a transfer? I’m really anxious and quite overwhelmed really, since I’ll be an international student and my current schooling system is so different. I don’t know about you guys, but my emails to the admission department earlier this year has yet to receive a reply:(

Hello everyone,

I will be a business transfer from a ccc, and will have 58 units completed by this fall semester. However, I am taking Span. 2, and 2 english courses for the spring semester. Will this hurt me??

I have a good g.p.a by the way.

Just a question to clarify. If I am a CC freshman right now, I apply as a transfer student? And I use Feb 1 Deadline correct?

@klee306: Yes, you do!

Hello all.

Do I have a shot at getting into Marshall / Leventhal with a 3.52 GPA and no ECs to my name (haven’t applied yet)? I’m currently attending a CC (Saddleback) and I figure after this fall and spring if I ace all my classes (25 total units planned) I’ll be able to bump it up to a 3.6+ before fall of next year, about 90 semester units completed in all. I also scored As in both Financial and Managerial accounting if that helps.

I’d love nothing more than to get into USC after my rocky start in CC, but want to be realistic about the situation. If there’s anything I could do to significantly improve my standing as it is I’d love to hear it too.

Where would I look for more information on what classes i have to take to get in as a Sophomore?

@klee306: You can check out the information I posted on 126. Also, you can go to the USC website and find your admission counselor and consult with them. That’s what I just did to get clarification on my schedule.

And good news (specifically for hajypajy and I, lol :P), I just got a response from a USC admissions counselor and letters of recommendation are not required (with the exception of specific programs)!

I’ll still probably send one in, just as a supplement to my pretty bare college career. :</p>

What sort of gpa should I be looking at to get accpeted into USC Econ?

Im a little worried. I had THE WORST freshmen yeah in college in this whole thread. I had a lot of family issues and my GPA tanked below a 2.0 -___- I want to apply as a sophomore transfer to Policy, Planning and Development with 31 credits this fall, and I have straight As right now for this semester. I have no college ECs but I have excellent ones from HS.

I was Senior Class President, French Club President (senior year also), student council member for 4 years, french club member for 2, served on a district wide youth council for a year and played JV Tennis for 2 years. And took 4 years of french.

Do you think my ECs would balance my not so good grades, supposing USC does take ECs into consideration? Should I apply and if I get denied, reapply with more transfer units?

Most all of my prerequisites are complete and Im even taking some of my Major recommendation courses.

Please help!

@jrnavid - I think that if you can articulate to USC exactly what happened in your personal life on the application, and if your High School GPA was at USC (or near)'s standards, then you’d have a good chance. But it’s pretty early in the semester, so I would say try to get involved in at least some sort of ECs bc the more you progress through college, the less your high school years matter (thank God, lol). And it’ll balance out your whole application.

But that’s just my humble opinion! I’d definitely apply this year, and if you don’t get in, just apply next year. Just be sure to keep your grades up. SC can only be so lenient.

hi everyone! i’m in my first semester at cc, hoping to transfer as a sophomore as a bio major :slight_smile:
i posted a question in another thread, but will post the answer here from my admissions counseler and usc admissions because it may help others out like it helped me!

I am currently attending my first semester at community college and by the end of my first year, I will have about 36 units. However since two of these courses are not transferable, I will end up having 32 transferable units by the end of spring. However, one of my classes in my 32 transferable units I am taking pass/no pass. It is the equivalent of Math 108 (Pre-Calculus) at USC. However this class is not required for my potential majors which will either be Biological Sciences or Human Performance. The math class I need for these majors is Math 150, which I am taking spring semster (equivalent of Math 125). Will USC still count this pass/no pass clas as part of my transferable units? It is under the articulation agreement, however the agreement also says that no more than 4 units can be taken pass/no pass. Math 135 (or Math 108) is 5 units.

answer: We will not count more than 4 units of a Pass/No Pass class. There simply is no way to quantify it in your overall official transferable unit count. You should be sure to take MATH 150 at MCC for a letter grade.

so i will have less than 30 units at the time of application and at the end of springtime :(

2nd question:
My second question you probably receive alot. At the time of application (February 1st 2012) I will have about 14 units completed. Does the “30 unit rule” regarding the not looking at high school GPA and SAT scores apply to the date of application or at the end of spring semester? At the time of application I will have 14 units completed, but at the end of the semester I will have 32 units. Thus, shall I report SAT scores or not? And if I have to, and they were not impressive, would you recommend retaking them?

answer:For transfer students, we do not require the SAT at all. Since you will have about half of your units still in progress by the transfer application deadline, we will still need to look at your high school transcript. However, we may also ask for your spring grades, so do work on hard on those even after you have submitted your application.

THEY DON’T LOOK AT SAT SCORES!!!
sorry if this was in no way helpful in any shape or form. just wanted to help out for the heck of it

@brenddaasays: Oh, no! Emails from the horse’s mouth are always extremely helpful. Thanks so much for posting it!

I’m curious as to what school forms are required from us. I think I’ll email my counselor about it now.
