@5nonnegotiables - You quoted hepburn95. When you put the @ sign in front of a person’s username, that’s called quoting in forum jargon.

Can I appeal if my application wont be reviewed because I’m missing a toefl score? It is worth a shot or I better just wait to apply for next fall?

@Harren

What do you have to lose?

@5nonnegotiables - I believe she’s asking whether appealing is an option.

@Harren- I’m not too familiar with TOEFL, but is it possible for you to upload that score? You should call USC, tell them about the situation, and if possible, bring up the possibility of uploading the document now, and later sending the official scores.

If you explain it to them, they might just give you a shot.

@esai23

I believe that @harren understands my response, even though it appears you do not, because they were asking if it was worth a shot… If you had read the entire post. My belief is what do you have to lose by trying. Probably if @harren needs to clarify, they could let me know themself.

Thanks though.

The weather is amazing. We got up to 63 today!

I went on a run through this new trail I found → preparing for SB this coming week

@esai23 It is not possible for me to upload a score because I didn’t get tested for it, they provided a hard deadline which was yesterday, and there are no available test dates until the summer. They told me toefl is required for all international students with no exceptions. I was stupid and thought they don’t need it because none of the UC’s asked for it and even LMU didn’t need it because I already passed college level english in my CC but for USC there’s no exceptions.

i was wondering if you guys think i have a shot at usc. my first semester of college i attended a state school and earned a 1.97. After that year i transferred to a jc and earned 4.0’s for the duration of my period in college thus far. I know stand at a 3.68 with a ton of volunteer work at a food bank and access to great help for my essays/personal statements. Do i have a shot? Thanks for your help!!!

@jch718 What’s your major? And how did you explain the low grades?

@hepburn95 I am a sociology major. The low grades were a result of immaturity,being horribly homesick, and not being proactive enough to channel it in a good way. I took 14 units that Semester. 1 was a pass/fail math course which I passed, then I received 2 C+'s and a D+. Do you think there’s a shot for me?

@jch718 USC does really like upward trends, so that is good. And sociology is under Dornsife which is the easiest school to get into. I hope that your essays and EC’s are enough to convince them! Your GPA is good enough for Dornsife, I just hope they don’t see that first semester as a deterrent. I think you have a good shot if they don’t put too much negative weight on that. Good luck!

@hepburn95 Thank you and good luck to you as well. I do hear a lot about USC loving upward grade trends so fingers crossed that can help me. I did in fact retake all the class i got a D+ in and received an A. Also forgot to mention I have a family friend that is a Professor at USC and he is going to write one of my letters of rec. Do you think That’ll help?

@jch718 It’s really hard to tell if that will help simply because of the mixed results in the past. At the end of the day, it all just depends on the rest of your application and the person reading your application on whether or not that letter of rec will make a difference.

At any rate, your upward trend may help you a lot more than you think (even more than the letter of rec). It has been said that USC appreciates that kind of thing.

Good luck on getting in!

@scahopeful Sorry to annoy, but I am so desperate to get into usc. Its been my dream school since as long as i can remember and I’ve had a lot of family that have gone and are currently attending and i Would like nothing more than to be a part in that. So do you think that the 1.97 is just too low for them to look past? I did retake that course one summer and received an A in the class if that means anything

@jch718

I think that colleges say that they really like to see an upward trend of grades and that a lot of great people don’t have a great 1st semester. I have heard that if you have had a not so great first semester, colleges like to see that you found a solution to a problem ( your 1st sem gpa), and fixed the problem and succeeded to move forward.

So I wouldn’t worry about it and just hope for the best just as we all are.

@jch718 No problem, that’s what this thread is for–to support each other and provide any information that we can to help others.

And to answer your question, it’s what 5nonnegotiables said. BUT, just to put it in different words/expand on the topic, I believe that an upward grade trend demonstrates one’s growth as an individual. That’s part of the reason why universities love to see them. An upward grade trend is usually the result of a person “growing up”/becoming more mature, adapting to some major change in their life, and/or learning how to deal with less than favorable circumstances in a way that is not detrimental to their academic performance.

Those things are key to being successful not only in college, but also in the workforce. So it makes sense for universities to look for such a trait in an applicant.

What’s everyone doing for SB?

@scahopeful Going on a cruise to Mexico! And getting some homework done of course :)

hey does anyone know if we have to send our AP scores now?

@scahopeful Thank you for the help! Much appreciated! Given my statistics, do you believe that I stand a decent shot at being admitted? or would it be helpful to stay another year at a jc and improve my gpa more?
