I also heard that Cinematic Arts is really difficult to get into which is the school I applied to. Hopefully I can at least get accepted to my 2nd (sociology)

@lanbernas Yeah. What program did you apply for? School of Cinematic Arts is probably one of the most difficult schools to get into. I’ve heard that getting into SCA is equivalent to getting into Harvard Law School. But that may be a rumor…

@hepburn95, that is incorrect. If you don’t get into your first or second choice majors you are still considered for undecided and if you are admitted you are admitted to Dornsife as undecided.

SCA is extremely difficult to get into but it has very little to do with academics. It’s because they have so few spots and (from what I’ve researched) their decision is made based on how good of a storyteller you are, not how much you know about Quantum Physics (this, however, will probably help in gaining admission to USC).

@greengecko I applied to Critical Studies which if I’m not mistaken is the biggest program. Since it is more academic based than say Film and Television production I should have a better shot. But looking back I should have just applied to Sociology…would have been way easier to get in

They will definetly send u a sgr if u are applying to marshall and taking calc in the spring. I had a completely upward trend its just as simple as i didnt have core courses finished and my gpa wasnt very high. This year is different mainly because i applied to a different school but ive never had a downward trend in grades ive made the deans list the last 3 consecutive semesters. Core classes are a must. General ed is also very important USC really cares to see that you are someone who is going to graduate in good time. But like randomnewguy said dont waste your time freaking out about it honestly set a date like may 20th and dont check usconnect until that date. Focus on finishing your semester.

@scahopeful what do you mean “how good of a story teller you are”… Do you mean how well you are able to tell a story in the personal statement and essays?

Do we all have to submit a mid-year grade report? If so by when?

@fayano I’m pretty sure they mean telling stories through film or writing actual scripts (if they’re applying to screenwriting) for the portfolio portion of the SCA application

@Magico Only if they request it, some people send it in anyways if they think it will help their chances, or so that it will take less time if they do get an SGR to get a decision back

Am I the only SDA applicant here?

@sorakeybade I applied to Viterbi as an Industrial Engineering major! Anyway, are they really giving out decisions by June 2nd? :o

I have a councelor at my CC who did his graduate school at there and stays in regular contact with SC and what they want from transfers. You really have to knock that essay out of the park n make yourself stand out. Being a good story teller dosnt mean like fiction but how well you can tell your story an get someone to really see that you stand out from the pack.

That applies to all major choices.

@fayano I meant just that. How good of a storyteller you are. It’s about this for nearly all the SCA majors; however, I’ve seen that Crit Studies & IMD focuses less on the storytelling component. Crit Studies is literally what it says, critical studies. My film professor has a graduate degree from SCA in crit. studies and she explained to me that it is a wide breadth of film topics but the application is tailored to analyses of film and film knowledge. Not necessarily how good you are at telling an interesting story.

In the supplement, Film/TV Production, WSTV, etc. have writing samples. WSTV is concerned with storytelling, originality, and screenwriting format. Film/TV production is almost pure storytelling ability. Can you pull me in with a creative/original idea that is compelling and flows together? is a general question here.

I know for Film/TV Production, there is a personal statement, a general writing sample (where you have to tell an original story–there are many ways you can do this), a portfolio, and a visual sample (where you have to write a 1 page story that goes with it to explain it).

Sidenote: I think people think that the portfolio is the same thing as the SCA supplement. It’s not. It’s only a small part of the whole thing. I’ve been told that they do place importance on it but not nearly as much as your writing samples (for Film/TV production). This is because many people do not have access to equipment or anything film related. Your portfolio is like a resume for your creative endeavors, it need not even have many film related activities. It’s not a reel–which is completely different.

Storytelling ability is demonstrated in the writing samples, not the portfolio (since it is impossible to write a story in what is the equivalent to a resume).

@JR2013 So if you get a SGR you should send your grades right after your last quarter/semester? My school year ends at the end of June so this is really late. The only core class I would have left to take in the Spring quarter is my last chemistry class, so I’m guessing this is going to happen?

You should send them asap. Its not definite that you will recieve an sgr tho. Anytime you finish a quarter you should send in your grades if it will help, even if your not asked

@JR2013 I see, thank you for the tip!

@JR2013 One more thing, by “sending in grades” you mean my official transcript after each quarter completed following my application, right?

Hello everyone, I have a quick question. I’ve been heavily considering changing my major and because I go to four year university I was wondering whether I should change it before or after I get my decision? Would it even be possible to change majors if I am accepted to 'SC?

@fightingtitan I’m pretty sure it’s only if you are a sophomore transfer, but I’m not 100% sure

@hepburn95 … USC was the last school I heard from, right after I graduated from my community college (after Memorial Day). At that point, I was pretty far along the process with other schools. I almost had to eat a deposit at a state university, but then another private university came along (before USC) with another offer. I asked if they could give me an extension on the deposit (while I waited on USC) and they kindly obliged. That’s often an option and don’t be afraid to ask. They’re not going to rescind your offer.

And I can totally get the frustration, as I completely moved my entire life from Maryland. The best advice I can give is prepare a few options and understand they may have to be the option is USC falls through.

@Trojan131 … Not sure about the SGRs, because I never had to submit my grades. I had over 58 units by the time I applied.

And @hepburn95, I was turned down for my first and second choice at USC, but the university still admitted me into Dornsife as Undecided. They will totally do that if they like the candidate, but don’t have a spot in the candidate’s school(s) of choice. It happens. Not all the time. But it does happen.

@RandomNewGuy what were your 1st & 2nd choices?
