Hey guys, I’m a prospective transfer for 2015. I attend a CC in NC and I was wondering if a B (yes, I know) in Microeconomnics will severely damage my chances. It’s completely out of my major range (journalism). I had a 4.0 Fall semester, but micro is just killing me right now. Will USC appreciate that I tried something out of my comfort zone anyway? I plan on getting 4.0’s in all of my other classes, so I’ll have a 3.9 after this year. Thoughts anyone?

@NCXfer No, I don’t think a B in Microecon would do much harm, and if you finished all the prerequisites by Fall, it is likely that they won’t do SGR.

@scahopeful … My first choice was always USC. Runner-up came went to Pitzer, but Chapman and Cal State Fullerton were also in the mix.

Where’s Tomred?!

No problem. And yes exactly.

Good to know you can post pone a deposit because i was worried about losing 200$ to university of oregon by may 1st

Randomnewguy comin in clutch.

@RandomNewGuy I meant your 1st and 2nd choice majors lol

@Coolkid094 … He’s doing well. We haven’t hung out this semester, as we have both been crazy busy (the fault mainly lies on me). I probably bit off more than I can chew this past semester, with the 18 units and part-time gig and two media lab shifts and extra stuff on top of that. We tweet and text.

@scahopeful … I was Annenberg or bust. I applied for Journalism and Comm.

@RandonNewGuy Thank you for the information!

Important question here: So I filled out my Common App as a first choice architecture major, second choice spanish major and a pre-professional focus on teaching. Should I call USC and let them know I’m no longer interested in the teaching pre-professional focus? If so, how should I do that? Thanks guys - and as always, this forum is INCREDIBLY helpful.

I don’t think it could hurt, however a pre-professional emphasis is not the same as a major (i.e. that you can’t get a degree in it). For example, someone could be pre-med and an art major. They would likely take lots of science classes to prepare for grad/medical school but their overall degree will be in art.

Would somebody mind “chancing” me? I’d appreciate it.

Also, at my current college (SMC), I have a 3.94 GPA. The only reason I have a 3.75 is because I didn’t complete a “college” course that my high school offered ( I got a D since I left high school early and didn’t complete it
). Do you think they will take my more recent grades into consideration more?

Thanks!

USC always takes trends into consideration, but it’s impossible to chance you. The admissions process often sounds like a cross between armchair psychology and tarot card readings.

(I think you have a really good shot, though.)

@ randomnewguy thanks for the feedback :)

If anyone else has any opinions I’m all ears!

@McGreans

I think that you have a good opportunity but could have a great opportunity if that GPA was higher (on a first impression). Your location and legacy are a plus and your “D” kind of justifiable once explained, of course if you explained it; furthermore that “D”,is quite one old “D”(you said high school) and shows upward trend like @RandomNewGuy said.

So after a full review on your application if your writing was great as well as your rec. letters and wrote a good explanation about the “D” and the reviewer had the same mentality as me I would say you are good to go. Of course this is a subjective personal opinion. Take it as you may.

Interesting…

@RandomNewGuy “…armchair psychology and tarot card readings.” Classic.

@basketballer123 yea, that was taken from the statement that the dean of admissions released just a few days ago, it was published on USC’s site. Its not really insider information or anything, meant to be for the public if thats what you thought it was. haha.
