@jucery13 you can still buy tickets and go to football games at student prices! I know it’s not quite the same, but it will be fun to go to games regardless.
@jucery13 Sending good vibes your way. I definitely think that they bump a select number of spring admits into fall. Not sure how good Kirk Brennan is with answering emails, but he’s answered almost all of my questions via twitter @kirk_brennan. You might want to ask him. See if he says something different.
I submitted my enrollment deposit just a couple of hours ago and I tried logging into Oasis and it let me! But there’s no info on there lol. Where are you supposed to go to see which courses transferred? I checked a while ago and it says that I’m a freshman again, but it seems like everyone had this problem.

Hey guys! My stars report was updated the day before yesterday; however, I still haven’t received my packet yet. Should I be expecting it to come on Monday? Also, what are the “conditions of admission” people are referring to in their acceptance letters? Thanks!
@jucery13 I’m really conflicted! After this spring, I will have close to 100 units (about 95 if my math is right) and my CC basically has told me that they want me out of there already, so going to my CC in the fall isn’t really an option (taking a fourth year at CC led to me taking a lot of unnecessary classes).
The way I’m looking at things now, I’m going to go ahead with my plans for ucla. I did mention in my email to my counselor that I would drop all plans for ucla at the drop of a hat for usc, but if your counselor said not to get your hopes up, I’m expecting a similar response. ucla doesn’t start until September 24th, I believe. So I guess I would find out about whether or not USC bumps me up to fall before that as I think they start in late August. If not, I guess it’s ucla for me. It sucks. I really felt like I belonged at usc and just got slightly unlucky that they got to my application so late.
The only thing that would allow me to wait for spring is if usc offered me amazing financial aid over ucla
I found the article I had mentioned earlier. In 2014, it said USC had graduated 13 linguistics BAs and 6 PhD students. So does anyone think the whole fall/spring thing has anything to do with major selection? It seems like the major I want to switch into is even more unpopular than I thought - I really like the subject matter though
Are we given two weeks to decide if we want to accept our offer from the date we receive our package or from the day that the letter was dated? I received the package on May 27th but the letter was dated on May 23rd. I called the admissions office on Friday since I wasn’t sure which one it was and asked if I could have an extension on making my decision (I was given a week) but I’m not entirely sure if I was granted it. The person I spoke with asked why and I said to decide which school is better for me given my financial situation, he then said “ok, I’ll give you another week. I’ll make a note about this.” Just like that.
Alright guys, I spoke to a good friend of mine over lunch yesterday that attends USC and is an orientation leader, so he has 1st hand info on the reasoning for spring admission. What he told me is that it has nothing to do with “getting to an application late” or anything of the sort. It primarily occurs with students that are trying to enter impacted majors that have a lot of units completed already. The reason being, you’ll jump straight into upper division classes that are still filled with seniors that may have a semester left or so. So the way to avoid getting admitted for spring is to have about a semester of lower division coursework remaining, as well as applying to a major that isn’t as popular as say, Marshall or Annenberg. Also, he said the age of the applicant plays heavily into that. You’ll find that more of the older (in age, not unit count) will be spring admitted as admissions has the thought process of “oh they’ve waited this long, what’s 5 more months”. Also, as sad as this is, USC is “need-blind” in making admission decisions, but not in offering what semester you’re admitted for. Meaning that those that apply for financial aid are more likely to be admitted for spring than those who don’t. The reason? Why would USC want someone who’s paying, let’s say $10K per year at SC for longer than someone paying 60k? If you’re paying full price they’ll want you there taking classes THERE, not at a CC. Lastly, he said it can boil down to the strength of the application. Were your essays crap but your gpa high? Spring admit. Are you going to drag down the average admitted gpa of transfers, but told an amazing story and have tons of ECs? Spring admit.
Hope this helps with some of your questions! I was so curious as to why so I asked my friend out for lunch yesterday and he let me know! His answers seems very reasonable to me
@jch718 The majority of this does indeed make sense. Although I would have to think the time of them getting to your application does play some small role. I’ve never seen someone accepted in early May get in for the spring semester
Other than that, I fit what you’ve described. I’m an older student (will be 22 in the fall), I have a ton of units since I took another year at CC so I could try at USC again. So that’s two things against me.
@jch718 I trust what you’re saying and want to add that I believe it all comes down to marshall or the other impacted schools. My friend and I are both sophomores entering impacted majors: we have pre reqs completed but only 1 of the 6 GE categories. We’ve completed 33 units thus far. I’m applying for financial aid and he’s not, I have a 4.0 and he has a 3.9. I just think business is really crowded this year.
@zettasyntax I totally get what you’re saying (also I recall you being admitted for SOC, which I find hard to believe that’s impacted) but there’s still kids that are doing finals at their respective CC’s this week. I find it hard to believe that they’ll all be spring admitted because they’ll send in grades later than others.
@Shortstop3 well shoot, looks like his response isn’t a perfect science (guess I shouldn’t have taken it as such). But yeah I think you’re absolutely correct about marshall! It’s crazy impacted and a lot of their students (hate to generalize) are in the Greek system and stay longer than the majority of other students- 4.5-5 years.
@jucery13 From how I understand it if you were offered spring admission (one out of ~500 people) they actually really want you there…I mean it is really a select few that they offer that to… Most of the time they do that if you are a wildly awesome candidate but have a GPA a little below the standard so they can advertise that the average fall admit is ~3.8 etc… for all those silly college report sites (usnews)
@jch718 no worries, I don’t think there is a science, but his insights are definitely plausible reasons for spring admission. I just posted that for future applicants so they know that spring admission is definitely a possibility for the impacted schools.
4.0 GPA freshman spring admit
Hey guys! So I just received my ‘digital letter’ as the admissions counsellor called it, and I was accepted into Dornsife for the fall semester!
I will try to change the college/major as I applied to Annenberg, but hopefully it shouldn’t be too hard, as I saw the Vice Dean of Annenberg today and he said that I should tell him when I apply for the major change and he’ll be happy to help. He was very friendly, and even said that should my parents have any questions, they should contact him personally.
(This is semi-coherent, sorry, I can’t control how excited I am!)
You received it on your portal today? @batusa
@poisonx I’m not sure, but as a rule of thumb you want to live either on the north side of campus or just north of campus (avoid west, south, east). Parkside is on the southwest corner of campus and it’s kind of isolated from the greater USC community, but I’ve also heard that Parkside can be close and tight-knit for this reason. OTOH it’s a quiet place good for studying if that’s important to you.
If I don’t get a housing assignment I like I might just go to University Gateway.
@lordfx the avg freshman admit will have around a 3.83 GPA, the avg transfer applicant has about a 3.7 GPA I currently have a 3.73 so I really doubt it could’ve been my GPA.
After reading what @jch718 said I do think it makes a lot of sense to give fall admission to the people who are paying top dollar. If your paying over 50k per year in tuition and on top of that you need to wait, students may take their money elsewhere. After all we need to remember that university’s are a business, and therefore profit is key.
As for the unit thing, I did complete all the transferable courses required (GE’s and Pre Reqs) However for marshall you still need to take quite a bit of lower divisions because some of the lower division such and micro and macro econ are not transferable.
I really hope I have a shot at getting in for Fall.
@zettasyntax wow almost 100 units?? Im curious if your counselors have told you how many more years of financial aid you have left?(FAFSA and CAL Grant). I really want to double major or triple major(I know call me crazy) at USC, but financial aid was a big concern for me, as this is my second year, so I estimate that if I take spring admission and decide to to go to USC I might stay for 3 more years if I do decide to double major( so total would be 5 years). Lol i don’t want to run out of aid while at SC, cause Idk how I’m gonna make 60k magically appear.
@jucery13 I only used up two years of financial aid. I couldn’t get it for the longest time. I started in 2011-2012 and barely took any classes because I had to pay for everything out of pocket - they wouldn’t even waive my class registration fees. The first semester I got financial aid was Fall 2013. So I should have two years left. What I did is pack a lot of units in that year. I took about 47 units in Fall 2013/Spring 2014 and that was easily more units than I had earned my first two years at CC lol (I barely took any classes because of the financial aid thing). I just wanted to minor in computer science and that seemed tough enough
I don’t think I’d be able to pull off a double or triple major.
Also, I have 1 on my transcript and the rest A’s, so I don’t think I would really bring down the average GPA if I had gotten in for fall, so I wonder if it is because I’m old and have so many units that I got in for spring. I know sociology is mega impacted at ucla, but I don’t know about usc. It wasn’t even my first choice.
