Official USC 2015 Transfer Thread

It doesn’t guarantee admission… That’s what they expect you to have though

@collegegal122 that can’t be the minimum though…just like a standard? or average?

@amessi12 The average GPA accepted is 3.7 (inclusive of all majors, for Fall 2014).

Am I hopeless with a 3.48 for mechanical engineering?

Hi, I recently withdrew from UCR due to financial reasons and I didn’t like the school at all so I wanted to increase my chances of transfer so I’m going to attend a CC. I am a business admin major and I would love to hear any advice you have on transfering to USC. It’s my dream school but I got denied as a freshmen and now I want to increase my chances of getting admitted as a junior transfer.

@sc4589 Hello! The biggest piece of advice I can give you is to not give up! I was also denied in HS and then got accepted 2 years later as a junior transfer! Just keep your grades up and focus on the pre-reqs! Get in touch with a representative from the Marshal School of business (they’re super nice and very helpful). I ultimately chose another college over USC but I regret it very much! Go Trojans!

Hey guys, I just finished my first semester at USC as a transfer students. I just thought I’d share some of my experience with you guys. First things first, as expected, it’s a VERY competitive environment. I was surprised at how competitive every student was when it came to their grades. You will see many students who will have tons of internships, work experience, study abroad experience, etc. There are tons of bright students so if you are like me, you will thrive in that kind of environment because it just makes you work that much harder. I’m currently a business major and I can say that I really love Marshall! The professors are all wonderful and willing to help you not only with your academic career, but your professional career as well. My professors this semester were so eager to share with me their knowledge about the industry. One of my Accounting professors took the time to have free Excel tutorial sessions where she brought in a student of hers who now works for an investment banking firm. Pretty cool stuff! The one thing that I admire most about Marshall is that it truly focuses on experiential learning. You really learn by doing. They set up many things for you to do that are relevant in business.

The campus is absolutely beautiful and there’s so much things to do! People at USC are generally friendly and nice! One thing that caught me off guard, however, is how much of a party school it is. If you’re a party person, you’d love this aspect of USC. For me, I thought it was a bit annoying how crazy some students were especially on Fridays. Greek life is huge at USC. I do not have anything against it, but sometimes you may feel secluded because there’s so many students in Greek life. I’ll be happy to answer any questions you have about USC!

Shoutout to my buddy @jucery13. See you in Spring?

@poisonx Hey there, cool to see somebody from when the thread was more active  I want to say I remember you, but there were so many people back in the days :stuck_out_tongue: I remember two people with “x” in their name and one being from Hawaii I think, but I don’t know if that one was you.

I wanted to have some students take pictures of me next to various statues and stuff when I was there for orientation over a week ago, but I was worried to approach them. I mean I’m pretty shy in general, but I was worried they’d just flat out ignore me or something :stuck_out_tongue:

I wanted to ask a question about housing if you could help me out or have any experience. As a spring admit, I guess there was even less of a chance of them finding housing for me as I know it wasn’t guaranteed for any transfers. Anyway, they offered me some temporary housing and I really didn’t want to accept that offer because it was pretty bad. I’m concerned that this is going to mess up my financial aid since it was based on me living on campus and stuff. They basically covered all my tuition and left me with paying for housing. The loan amounts they offered were sorta small though. I think one of them was like 1K. My summary said that housing was supposed to be something like 8K. Do you think USC would let me take out additional amounts for the Stafford Loan and such or would it have to be all from a bank or something? Also, since I’m about 99% sure I can’t live on the campus itself anymore, have you heard anything about off-campus housing from other students? I read some Yelp reviews about a place where they do tours and just barge in, so that wasn’t pretty. Sorry this was so long or if you don’t have a lot of experience with it - I really just don’t want to commute everyday since I basically have classes everyday with my current schedule :stuck_out_tongue:

@zettasyntax Hey there! I remember you. Congrats on being accepted! Yes, I’m the kid from Hawaii. And don’t be afraid to approach anyone for a picture with Tommy Trojan. I’m sure there will be a lot of people who won’t mind!

In regards to your housing question, there are plenty of places that you might want to check out (Lorenzo, Tuscany, StuHo are some popular ones close to campus). I don’t think you can borrow more than what you are awarded. However, If you need additional loans, I would contact the FA office or try doing an appeal. I appealed my original financial aid and basically they gave me a couple of grands more than my original aid. They will require you to submit proof of financial need like doctor’s papers, bills, etc. Why did you choose not to accept the on-campus housing? I currently live in a USC owned apartment a few blocks from campus, and I would much prefer to stay within UPC. Let me know if you have any other questions.

@poisonx My memory’s not as bad as I thought  :stuck_out_tongue: The students helping out at orientation were a super friendly, but I still couldn’t get them to laugh at my jokes haha, so I was just a little uneasy about asking random people. I didn’t even take a single picture that day, which kinda sucked :stuck_out_tongue:

I have checked out the Lorenzo, but it’s probably way out of league in terms of price if it had to be year long lease type of deal. I don’t mind sharing my aid info if that might help you out with my question. USC basically gave me enough aid that would cover all tuition and other fees with a small surplus of about $500. As well as an offer of 3.5K in various loans and 1.5K in work study. I tried to appeal to get that work study in the form of more loans since it said I could do that, but I don’t think it worked. I didn’t accept the temporary housing offer because it’s really not what I wanted at all, even if it might only be temporary. It had those community shower things and that’s just not for me. Since the estimate says housing is nearly 8K, I figure I may need a loan of 4K-5K in the worst case. I’m not really scared to take out any loans since I only took a rather small one to pay for classes when I didn’t get grant aid at first at my CC, but I really don’t know if USC would let me to do that or direct me to go to a bank or something since it’s more of a luxury expense to live on/near campus as all my education related fees are taken care of.

@zettasyntax I’m not sure if you remember me but I’m glad you decided to go with USC after all. I’m almost certain you will enjoy your time here as I did this past semester.

Just curious what your transfer gpa was when you applied? I am a freshman at a CC right now, applying to transfer next Fall as an business major. Also did you apply as a junior or sophmore?

Thanks for the help
