Official USC 2015 Transfer Thread

USC Financial Aid is starting to make me mad :-L

My mom and I applied for FAFSA and the CSS Profile and paid the $25 fee. Then they asked for documents, I uploaded them.

Now they’re asking for my noncustodial parent to fill out the CSS Profile, submit another $25 fee, and submit documents. My parents are divorced (5 years) and I have no relationship with my father. I can’t get access to his taxes and information.

The deadline to accept our offer of admission is August 1st, and I don’t want to accept and pay a $300 non-refundable fee if I don’t even know if I can afford to attend USC. I surely do not $120K lying around.

It is possible to get a waiver for the non custodial profile but you will need a third party to verify details including that there is no relationship and he does not currently support you in anyway. I got one for my ex husband but he is mentally ill, an addict and living on the streets in another state. My sons guidance counselor wrote the letter.

No problem. I was just a regular transfer. You may take business calc also, but I would recommend taking regular calc since it transfers to more schools (in case USC doesn’t work out for whatever reason). If you have any more questions, feel free to message me about the process!

@genieforuboi

Is anyone else’s Degree Progress Report inaccurate? I’ve completed 90+ units at community college, and on my report it states I am freshman and only earned 28 units? :frowning:

@Ellie64 well USC lets you transfer 64 units from your previous institution, but only 28? Yeah I would call and check
because the only way you would have earned only 28 units is if the rest of your units were non transferrable. Which I highly doubt so call.

HI everyone I was wondering would it be possible to transfer to USC with a 2.5 GPA
with circulars and letters of recommendation? I want to apply to the Business school, and I know my gpa is low.
The reason why is my mother had breast cancer, 2 deaths in my family. I’m not asking for sympathy I just want to
know if I stand a chance transferring to USC. I am planning on transferring from a cc too.
Thanks, Feed back would be amazing!!

@furuh123 first off, I’m very sorry for your losses and your moms breast cancer. With that being said: how many units have you completed? If you’ve completed a ton, I would say you have an incredibly slim chance at getting in. If you are pretty new to school, you have a chance if you do some serious loading up on units and get all A’s to improve that GPA. I had a rough first semester of college (1.97), but it was only 9 units. I had straight A’s in over 50 units since that time and was able to earn admittance. So don’t give up, but have back up plans as well. I wouldn’t put all your eggs into the SC basket, nor would I focus on their GE program. Focus on the IGETC, and go from there. Hope this wasn’t too mean, but I just want to be honest.

Also, I would avoid focusing on those stories if you do choose to apply. USC wants to get to know you! Not hear about the amazing people in your life that have sadly passed on. You should mention it for sure and discuss how it molded you into someone that realized how short life is and that you can’t justify living a life where your dreams have gone unfulfilled, as opposed to trying to gain sympathy points. You can be certain they’ve heard some terribly horrific stories in their day with over 75k apps with transfers/freshman every year.

Best of luck!

@furuh123 Do you mean Marshall? I definitely recall somebody getting into Marshall with a 2.8ish GPA for Fall 2014! So while it may not have the best odds, it isn’t impossible. This person was from out of state even :stuck_out_tongue:

I would definitely try to raise your GPA, but it isn’t always everything. I had a 4.0GPA when I applied to USC in 2014 and was rejected, but I applied again with a B and W now tarnishing my transcript and I got in. I’m very sorry about your losses too :frowning: but I’ve heard that it isn’t the best to talk about such things for too much in your essays. For instance, maybe some people are sensitive to topics like suicide and cancer and they’ll be too affected to pay much attention to the rest of your application. You can and definitely should mention it, but try to keep it to just a couple of sentences and you don’t want to depress the counselor reading your essay. In my essay, I talked about how my late grandfather risked everything for us to have an education and how my cousins all either being dropouts or not having attended college makes me feel like I let him down. Probably a cheesy topic, but hey, it sorta worked.

Anyway, I do wish this raised your hopes a little! It’s not impossible, so why not try? Do have backups though. I was rejected from just about every single school I applied to in 2014 and that meant yet another year at CC for me.

Hey guys! just visiting this thread. Any admits getting ready to move in their dorms?

For those of you that were admitted as sophomore transfers to Marshall, may I ask what you did for extra curriculars? Does USC even place an emphasis on ec’s for transfers or should I focus 99% on grades and maybe join like one club.

@genieforuboi Imo I believe they are both looked heavily upon. You should definitely try joining a club related to your major, or better yet, try finding an internship. For me, I’m an accounting major and I was lucky enough to have scored an internship at an accounting firm during my freshmen year, which I believed had an huge impact of my acceptance. Doing extra curricular can help reveal a lot about you that your grades and test scores can’t.

@veip12 may I ask where you interned at?

@genieforuboi Cal Poly Pomona

@genieforuboi Oh haha, I misread that. I interned at a small firm near downtown LA.

Hi im a little late to this but I was wondering if I had a 3.77 GPA would I be able to have a good chance at transferring for computer science? Also I am worried about the personal statement, how important will it be regarding my application?

HI, if i have a 2.559 will i get in to USC? if I’m completing another semester and have outstanding major extra-circulars over 1300 hours in community service, part of student government at community college, and I have two youth groups I help manage, Sunday school tutor, tutoring for family friends and family. From Fresno, CA too. Plus, reason why i had such a low gpa because my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and also, I had two losses in my family. Still managed to finish school. I just need somebody to tell me there can be a slight chance.

Hey guys, I was wondering if I had a good chance in getting into usc. I’m currently a junior at chico state and transferred here from a CC last spring with a 3.15, I want to leave chico and finish my undergrad at USC so I can have a better chance getting into their PA program.
I’ll be around a 3.3 overall GPA after this spring semester at chico. I’ll be transferring as a senior and my question is will I be excused from some UD classes like ochem genetics ecology etc or am I screwed?
Is my GPA even competitive enough? I was trying to find average GPA of transfers by majors but had no luck :frowning:
Thanks!

Hey I’m currently at Syracuse University and I am also trying to transfer to USC. I would like to know when should I start the application for the fall of sophomore year? I do not have 30 credits yet, but after May I should have more than 30 credits. Also I am only taking gen ads not and I’m do fairly well in each class I should know my G.P.A at the end of the semester, but does USC only care about me obtaining a 3.7?

@collegegal122 Why? does a 3.7 guarantee admission or something?
