Official Vanderbilt University Fall 2014 Transfer Thread

Hi! I’m also planing on applying for Fall 2015. I was wondering if in-state residence had any advantage and also if the number of credit hours I had (freshman at a 4-year) affects admissions. Also how important are teacher recommendations in the grand scheme of transfer admissions? Thanks!

Hi, @resipsa338‌! If by in-state residency you mean Tennessee, I don’t think that will have much of an advantage. Statistically, more people from TN apply to Vanderbilt so there tend to be more TN residents here, but being from TN doesn’t help. Also, the number of credit hours, plus the difficulty of your classes and the grades you received, are hugely considered. I would strive for around 30+ credit hours and a 3.8 GPA average in those courses. And make sure that your recommendations from professors/high school teachers are from individuals you think can explain your strengths well. Recommendations are very, very important in the application process for both freshmen and transfers. Any more questions, feel free to ask.

Hello, this is my first post on CC.

I’ve seen this done so I figured I would give it an attempt.

I am applying to the College of Arts and Sciences for a double major in Communication Studies and Political Science at Vanderbilt University for 2015 as a transfer. I completed my application back in November for transferring. I currently attend a Community College in my hometown (I’ll explain later). Here are my stats:

Before HS: Chosen as a participant in the Duke University’s Talent Identification Program (Did independent coursework three summers in a row at Duke University)

HS GPA: 3.28 (Didn’t really apply myself, placed school as a low priority)
ACT: 28
Activities: Mascot, Pep club, Drama club, President of my class, Student Council, President of Future Business Leaders of America, Key Club (Volunteer based club), FCA
Tennessee Scholar

College GPA: 3.75, will graduate summa cum laude
I’ve made the Deans List several times
In the College Honors program
Student Ambassador / Phi Theta Kappa Member / Student Government Association Member
Really good friends with the President, she calls on me to speak on the colleges behalf frequently.
Ned McWherter Scholar (Prestigious program- less than 18 from my state were chosen)
Studied Abroad in Greece this past summer

Kicker: First Generation Student
Highly involved in the community:
I am the youngest employee of my local Chamber of Commerce
Youngest Diplomat for the Chamber
Youngest individual in my communities history to complete the Adult Leadership Class sponsored by our county
Nominated for the Emerging Leader Award (Other nominees in history have been 10+ years older than me)
Owner of a successful and profitable business for the past 5 years. Youngest individual in my communities history to obtain a business license (received it at 16).
Recipient of the Tennessee Small Businesses Development’s Business of the Year award for 2014.
I am the youngest individual to sit on my cities YMCA board.
About six months ago I became the Charter President of a Rotaract club in my city (A community serving organization)
I am the youngest Rotarian in my city’s history.

My letters of recommendation were completed by the President of my College, my local Mayor, and the CEO of my local Chamber (my current boss).

I have been worrying myself sick about this decision. I have a lot riding on this, which makes me nervous. Do you think I have a chance? If so how good are my chances?

Thanks in advance! The people in this thread have been helpful just based off reading their replies to others!

Hello everyone! Is the school of Arts and Sciences one of the harder schools to get into transferring?

No

So Arts and Sciences usually accepts more students than Peabody?
