[OFFICIAL] Waiting Room

I think MilwDad has said his opinion most honestly and clearly. Not redundant nor irritating. And I feel rather the same.:)

Take myself as an example. As I got more and more decisions, Rice has been moved on my list from 1st choice to 2nd, then to 3rd choice. Now it’s 4th choice. But I am still dying for a decision, even Rice’s not my first choice.

As anxiousmom mentioned earlier, if Rice was ready to release their acceptances, they probably would have released them. My s’s year they released after 5 pm (Houston time) on the Friday before the expected release date (his was ED). They are not stupid, and there must be a reason they release when they do. We just don’t know what that reason is. Anyone willing to call them up Monday and ask?

And if my mechanic told me that my car might be ready a day before he promised, but that he wanted to double check the brakes to be sure they worked to his expectations, I’d certainly let him hang onto the car the extra day and tolerate the brief inconvenience. He’d still get it back to me when promised.

Rice is legally okay to not announce before 1st April. Nobody, inluding Milwdad is questioning that.
Issue is can it not do better ?

Haven’t your children striven to be better than their peer group ? Or have they just gone by the minimum / published state or college standards ?
Please think of the logistics problems in attending Student days when decisions come out late ( compared to Peer group )…then multiply that by 5 times for International students( whose money all including Rice are eagerly waiting for ). Or shall we say ‘let them suffer if they want to come to America ?’

How do you react when your car is returned from service earlier than promised ? Do you say ‘oh well, i can wait for another 2 days’ ?. Don’t you feel happy with that service company ?

Nobody is doubting Rice’s quality. Interest in Rice does not mean one cannot expect better performance ( specially when others are doing it ). Stanford, yes Stanford ( and not a wannabee Ivy ) released 6 days ahead of schedule, saying they want to alleviate student-parental uncertainties. And they like scores of others maintain Admission blogs with updates …if i want to be another Ivy, i should better take their best & not hide behind legal interpretation of whats the minimum i ought to be doing.

Rice remains in our target list …right at the bottom now.

LOL!! Good catch! A new member of CC and this forum as of 10:02 this evening. Welcome to cc, “dad”.

I already deleted my post, jym626. I’m restraining myself. So, logging out for now. Good luck to the rest of you prospective students. If you’ve lost your enthusiasm for Rice due to their not sending you perky emails and admissions updates and such, I hope you regain it when you get those big acceptance folders and think about actually attending Rice.

Sorry… I don’t know. I do know that they try to send them out so they arrive about the time of the email acceptances… patience, my young friends, and good luck to all. :)

Oh, I see you deleted your previous post, anxiousmom, so now my reference (in # 304) to your previous post is a little unclear. But then again maybe only just a little…

I’m really sorry to those who are thinking poorly of Rice that they’re not releasing their decisions early. I remember a few years back when Emory released its ED decisions later than the stated date. I don’t recall students thinking that Emory was arrogant or acting inappropriately. I truly understand the anxiety at this time of year, and realize that it can manifest itself in strange ways, but I suggest you really try to put this in perspective. Rice, as an institution, is just as good as it was last week. It hasn’t changed. Your perspective and expectations are just a little skewed now. If you choose to count this against Rice, then it’s your loss, as Rice will have lots of others who will be thrilled to attend.

I told my son (a junior at Rice) of all the concern about the decisions not being released yet, and he was puzzled. His response was that it’s not supposed to be out until April 1st, isn’t it?

I think the reason that those of us with students already at Rice are having difficulty understanding the depth of emotion about this is because we’re already on the other side of it. Once you’ve matriculated at a school, you’ll look back at this and realize that a few days difference really isn’t worth all the angst.

I truly wish you all a good outcome. And a calm and relaxing weekend.

Exactly …if my car mechanic calls me up and tells me that he might require another day …that proves the value of ‘proactive communication’ as opposed to silence on the website or through lack of emails etc from College.

Just for example, University of Rochester. Its a good school ( lets not get into whether its better than Rice or X or Y ). An admission counselor named Mckolkin actually blogs in CC …responding with occasional updates / advice. I hate to characterize that as “perky” email … it did help my child with some knowledge he did not have.

The very fact that we are going down to level of tracking what happened when my sis or bro got in and when did Rice announce at that time proves there is ‘anxiety’ and room for improvement here.

Rice remains top-class …it will continue to attract top-class students and impart great education …but opportunities for improvement remain on the communication front.

Beautifully said, blackeyedsusan. Methinks others may protest too much.

Despite the Ivy covenant, there is no advantage in being the last school to be heard from. I got two nice acceptances today in the mail, so now those schools are on my mind exclusively while I wait for Rice and the Ivies I applied to to get me my answers. Who knows? I might make up my mind even before they decide (but I doubt it).

Do you guys think that Rice’s somewhat “late” response and closeness to the Ivy League responses will hurt its yield? Just a thought hmm

Thanks, Blackeyedsusan for the weekend wishes.
Yes, i am taking my child to have lunch at UC Berkeley …the offer came in 4 days back.
A lot of us don’t realize that while colleges make choices …so do the students and their parents …
Cheers

Jym636 I like the allusion to shakespeare, if that’s what you were going for of course :)

It’s a definite risk. Someone who gets into their top school (which some of the ivies are for a lot of Rice applicants) and also gets into Rice the same day will likely not consider Rice. If that person was accepted by Rice a week or two before their top school decision, then Rice will probably grow on them (this was the situation for me last year).

On the other hand, if they get rejected by all the ivies they applied to and get accepted to Rice (a definite possibility), then Rice may be seen as like a savior type thing. Or they could be really depressed and disregard their Rice acceptance.

dear everyone,
take a straw and suck it up.
love,
sarah

That was really not a helpful post.

I agree with @vitaminc22. We’re all nervous. If you want to go to other schools because you think Rice is arrogant, please do. Leave it open for those of us who dream about going to Rice. Good luck everyone! :)

none of these are. the decisions aren’t coming any faster if you complain about it.

@blackeyedsusan and @starsshortie37 I agree. Rice probably does its best to select students they believe will actually attend Rice. This thread is making me want Rice to be able to read it and know exactly which applicants are saying what. Here is where unbiased opinions come out. If you are bashing Rice right now, realize we’re all going through the same thing (Some of us are worse off with acceptances to colleges we’re really not that interested in). So please, let’s all be patient and pray for the best.

OK honestly guys, this is getting ridiculous. And funny. Relax. You’re reading soooo much into Rice not releasing their decisions right now. Just try to chill and hang on for a few more days. Rice isn’t being malicious or trying to send any type of message with their late release of decisions. Maybe they’re actually not done? Even if they are, they can do what they want. Students who are really interested in Rice won’t let something as silly as waiting a few days longer prevent them from attending a school they love, and it shouldn’t. Don’t judge a whole school by its admissions office.
