CA: weird, weird essay relating reading rilke in German and Copmuter Science, I got really really different responses to this essay, so I hope they like it
Yale: about being the only girl in my CS class/programming team/networking club

CA: A phone call from a dead soldier’s brother I recieved (I donated to his charity)

Yale: How my grandfather told this story about how he used to shoot bears–it turned out he never did and how whether or not he did it didnt really matter

CA: basically a collections of examples that illustrate tenets of my personality and tie into the common theme of how I’m can’t be understood by “mere words”

Yale: how my love of reading storybooks as a child morphed into an eventual appreciation of real history

Common App: I took a risk here, or what I thought to be a risk, and I discussed my religion and how to has molded my values.

Yale: I wrote about the role confidence plays in my life and how it helps me to succeed.

do u guys think taking AP cal senoir year instead of junoir year can hurt your chances at getting accepted?

I was pretty sure most people took calc senior year, barring the absolute math geniuses (in fact, its the highest math my school offers). i guess it really depends on the school but I wouldnt worry about it too much.

AP calc is the highest math my school offers too, and only seniors take it. It depends on your school, I suppose.

I got a postcard saying that Yale received all the neccesary application documents required to review me today!!!:)

On the flip side, I was reading over my submitted application to Yale and I noticed several glaring errors like messing up the years I took certain AP tests(putting like 2005 instead of 2006) and messing up the dates for my non-American schooling(something to the effect of my app saying that I started schooling in another foreign country while alternately still living in another lol).

Yalies look smart though so hopefully they will be able to figure it out. Calming my nerves for 20 more days…that may be a more troublesome issue.:p

Whoo. Will they tell us if test scores are missing? My postcard was like “we’ve received all your materials… we’ll ASSUME test scores are being sent.” I don’t see how mine couldn’t’ve arrived (I sent them like… months ago) but still…

i mean my school only lets us take AP classes sr year. but we can take AP classes online jr year if we want. do u think i shud take them jr year or senoir year? how do u think yale will percieve this?

I think if you take them junior year it’ll show that you really wanted to challenge yourself. Look at what other smart, motivated kids at your school have done. That’s the kind of person you want Yale to see you are. Choose the classes that best reflect that.

For my essays:

Common App: I wrote about how I got over the fear that studying music theory too much would interfere with the creative aspects of songwriting, and then said that after crossing that line between the creative and theoretical and finding a balance, I applied that to other things in my life, such as science, and wanted to cross from the theoretical to the creative sides of science… from the learning part to the research part.

Yale Supplement: I wrote about what was going through my head when my dad was very sick at the end of my junior year, when nobody was sure if he was going to make it or not, and how I dealt with the possiblity of never having him there to guide me again.

CA: my experiences on an earthquake relief mission to Yogyakarta, Indonesia and how I shared their plight being of the same ethnic roots.

Yale: my identity issues revolving around being a minority race in my country Singapore, having recently converted out of the minority Muslim religion, and being gay person at the same time.

CA: A bunch of my friends and I were waiting to perform a concert in the city and so we just warmed up a cappella on the streets but then people started gathering and tipping us and stuff and it was fun…

Yale: How I grew up thinking my swimming instructors were incredibly cool and then realizing that as a swimming instructor this summer, the kids looked up to me in the same way and how it was really scary…

CA: How I have a random burning passion for entomology, and how I used to be really self-conscious about it because it’s out there, but how I came to not give a damn what anyone thinks of it because it’s what I enjoy.

Yale: How when I moved to China, I was this gossipy brat who was desperate to fit in and be considered ‘American,’ and how living in China changed my outlook and how I’m now willing to accept my full self as Chinese-Pakistani-Indian-Iranian-American. Not a very well-written essay overall, I must say.

Wow, I just had this random flash of total insecurity. Yikes :(

CA: What I have learned from my Golden Retriever

Y: How I think

Elegance in simplicity, eh?

wow your essay topics look so interesting…

CA: how I toured (dancing) and I tied this in with cultural/racial definition and how I think of myself as an Indian-American

Yale: how I determined I would become a physician – my passions, ecs, desires to help others, motivation, etc. — I dont know if I should have chosen this topic :

idk I feel so disheartened now… after looking at the “Official Yale EA Decisions - Class of 2010” thread, I am losing hope. So many amazing people were deferred or rejected.
There goes my optimism.

sry for being so blah. I am just so nervous. I feel so unqualified… i am no extraordinary applicant like koena and EAD. oh well.
but to make life happier: yay thanksgiving break was fun! shopping = love.
ok im done. end of story.

Wow, so koena are you a supporter of constitutional democracy(USA)/communism(China)/theocracy(Iran)/military dictatorship(Pakistan)/democratic republic(India)? Which country/culture do you most identify with?? Your life could function as a fascinating foreign policy case study IMHO(sorry I’m an IR nerd):p

CA: how/why i store every useless fact i come across and how that skill has helped me

Y: about my thought process (not good)
