Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): Superscored: CR 690; M 750; W 780 (2220)
[] ACT:
[] SAT II: Maths II: 780; Chem: 730; Chinese: 610.
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): School does not calculate GPA.
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Approximately Top 10%. There are 101 of us.
[] AP (place score in parenthesis):
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): Chem HL, Physics HL, Maths HL, English A1 SL, Mandarin SL, History SL. Marks available from January.
[] Senior Year Course Load: As above. In my school, because the class size is so small, English SL students are required to go to all English HL classes. So, I essentially had the workload of 4HL. School does not allow extra certificates or college classes for IB students.
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): No major awards. A few hodge-podge awards: School colours, distinctions in school and in maths competitions, a short-story writing prize, a research science youth ambassador competition runner-up, etc. I’m on a scholarship at school.[/ul]
[/li]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Debating (School Debating Captain) and public speaking. Regional debating winner 2007, runner-up 2009; entered several public speaking competitions regional and state level and have been a finalist.
2 school Choirs plus extra choral stuff (Taught and Conducted a choral arrangement of “When you say nothing at all” for House Choir competition and we won!); active member of my school house (this means pitching in to swim, run, play tennis, play hockey, debate, sing etc. for house trophy.)
[] Job/Work Experience: Worked for 3 years in a small bookshop. Have since picked up a 2nd job in a fruit shop.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Community Visitors Scheme - I visit a little old lady in an aged care home, so she has a friend and someone to talk to. I’ve done it for 2 years and I love it. I am also a Youth Ambassador for a citywide charity that provides educational resources to underprivileged kids - this involves fundraising and awareness. I made my 18th birthday party in lieu of gifts to this charity; I also organised a socks-and-jocks day at school, where everyone brings in new socks or underwear to donate to underprivileged/homeless.
[] Summer Activities: Dec/Jan 2009: Work at bookshop; Volunteer; Holiday with family to Aspen & Hawaii. In previous summers I’ve also been on Habonim Dror federal camps, and have trained for rowing/been on rowing camps.
[] Essays: One about competing against my friend since kindergarten; one about learning to drive with Grandpa. I tried to make them as light and accessible as possible.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Waived - from Physics teacher and History teacher. Both have taught me for at least 2 years - I am very!! chatty in both classes.
[] Counselor Rec: Waived
[] Additional Rec: From my boss at the book shop - waived.
[li] Interview: Went fairly well, but it wasn’t brilliant.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: No
[] Intended Major: English literature. Hoping for DS in Freshman year.

[] Ethnicity:
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket:
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Strong initiative which has come through in my essays and interview and extra details in my application; I work; Singing (which fits Yale’s active A Cappella movement!); the novelty factor of a blonde Jewish girl who learns Chinese.
[] Weaknesses: Downward trend in grades in 1st semester senior year (due to boyfriend’s sister being diagnosed with major illness- I was a bit of a shoulder to lean on I guess; also due to nature of assessment), SAT scores particularly Chinese and Critical reading (though hopefully they will see I have absolutely no Chinese background and take that into consideration); No major awards; International pool very competitive.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: To be compared against the rest of the international pool, to see if my SAT scores improve, and so they can see my final IB mark in January, and maybe just to see if I do anything productive with my time now that I’ve graduated.
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments: I’m just THRILLED not to be rejected. I honestly thought I would be. As soon as I have finished my other 8 apps, this profile is going to get mightier. My bookshelf is stocked with SAT critical reading and vocab prep books, and I will have time on my hands for work and volunteering.

Decision: Deferred - posted stats on Yale Pledge Thread ^^
For those deferred/rejected, keep pushing forwards! As long as we keep moving on, we’re bound to find a great school for us ^^
