[] IB (place score in parenthesis): Math SL (7), French B-SL (7)
[] Senior Year Course Load: full IB + 2 APs + orchestra
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): nothin really. Nat’l Merit Commended?
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Violin [7 years, tons of orchestras and ensembles, 1st Violin in my AllState Senior Orch], Piano [11 years], Class Secretary, NHS Treasurer
[] Job/Work Experience:noneee
[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteering at hospitals, labs, and the like. not very much when I think about it.
[] Summer Activities: CTY and a med camp at gtown
[] Essays: CommonApp: pretty good. may have been a bit too narrow, though. Yale Supplement: terrible, wrote it the day of the deadline and it was the worst thing I’ve ever written. big mistake.
[] Teacher Recommendation: average. I mean, they were the “amazing student blahblahblah” kind but I’m thinking that’s pretty average on CC.
[] Counselor Rec: No clue
[] Additional Rec: didn’t send one in. Does anyone think it would be a good idea to send one in now from a music teacher that’s known me for 10+ years?
[] Interview: fine. he said that I fit the mold perfectly for yale, which is good, I guess.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: No
[] Intended Major: Chemistry
[] State (if domestic applicant): 1 of the 50 :]

[] Income Bracket: 150k+
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I have an anti-hook. [see ethnicity]
[/ul]Reflection
[] Strengths: Dedication to music, GPA/rank, nothing really stands out too much though.
[] Weaknesses: Atrocious supplement essay, checking the wrong essay question on the common app, and SAT scores.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m just thankful not to be rejected…deferred because nothing really stands out besides music. Retaking SATS and crossing my fingers for the RD round, yale is still my #1…

[] IB (place score in parentheses): none
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Eng Lit, AP French Lang, AP CompSci, AP Calc BC, Honors Physics, Wind Ensemble, P.E., French Lit (independent study)
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NMSF? TASP?[/ul]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Lit Mag (Ed-in-Chief), Key Club Intl (Lt. Gov.), Book Club (President), creative writing
[] Job/Work Experience: none
[] Volunteer/Community service: library cataloging (w/ supplemental rec), Key Club
[] Summer Activities: TASP '09[/ul]

Writing (Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] Common App Main: Racism in multicultural communities. Previously a TASP essay and PubSpeak. 8.[/li][] EC Short Answer: TASP. 6.
[] Why Yale: Honest anecdote about how I started out irrationally hating the school, with reference to TASP and Directed Studies. 6.
[] Supplement: Leadership in a text-based MUD. 7.
[] Short Takes: 7.[/ul]
[li] Teacher Recommendation #1: AP Lang teacher, loves me; previously used for TASP. 8.[/li][] Teacher Recommendation #2: French teacher, who’s had me for 4 years and 5 classes. 7.
[] Counselor Rec: She’s probably annoyed with how many times I’ve met with her, but seems to like me a lot. 7.
[] Additional Rec: Library volunteering supervisor. Said that he would hire me if he could. 10 (not necessarily any impact on my app, but the rec could hardly be more positive).
[] Interview: Really weird. Alum interview that turned into a political debate. I kid you not. 5.
[] Art Supplement: none
Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: late Oct.
[] State: DE
[] School Type: competitive public charter
[] Ethnicity: Asian (Chinese)
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: 80k
[] Applied for FA: yes (permanent resident)
[] Intended Major: English/Computer Science
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): ORM, my anti-hook. I happen to be Chinese-Canadian, lived in NF, but that wasn’t emphasized on my app.[/ul]
[/li]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: TASP (to which I was initially WL’ed), essays (risky subject matter, but well-written), one-shot stats (no SAT retakes)
[] Weaknesses: course rigor (4 years of band + disinterest in math/sci at a math/sci school with heavy requirements in said area)
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Only 2 junior year AP scores, ORM female applying with a humanities major to the “humanities” Ivy.
[] What would you have done differently?: The CA short answer and Yale supplement essay (which I swapped at the last minute) could have used more polishing, I suppose. But I don’t regret the four years of All-State Band that caused my comparative lack of rigor.[/ul]

General Comments:
I’m honestly glad for the rejection, as it frees me to apply EDII to Swarthmore. Yale was kind of a first choice only due to FA. And a dear friend, high-stat URM, did get in–her options were basically HYPS or UGA, financially, so I’m ridiculously happy for her! Haven’t heard of any acceptances from my school yet; it’s about half-and-half deferrals/rejections.

I did my best, I organised every part of the application because noone at my school knew how to. All I can say is that admissions process is a mystery box, big black mysterious hole.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Multiple hooks, Yale was my top choice, extremely strong involvement in my extracurriculars (as in over 600 hours per year since freshman year for multiple activities)
[] Weaknesses: GPA (had one B), teacher recs from same subject
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think that I was able to convey my enthusiasm for Yale very well through the interview and the “Why Yale?” section. [/ul]
[/li]

I’m so over the moon right now.

It’s a deferral, not a rejection. If you get accepted RD at Yale and nowhere else, you’ll happily attend here. If you reread this post in two days you’ll be embarrassed at yourself for having written such a statement or conceived of such notions.
