Official Yale EA 2013 Hopeful Thread

the national merit semifinalist status…u cant discuss it until sept 10th.

I have a question. I’m planning on recording a couple of tracks to send along with my application to Yale. Although, I’ve just finished my first vocal course and I did perform with the choir at my school. Of course I can’t compare myself to great singers but I think I can give it a shot.
Taking all that into account, do you think I should implement the plan? If yes, what kind of music should I do?

“For the vast majority of our applicants, we evaluate the quality of extracurricular activities and talents through self-reported activity descriptions, essays, and comments made by recommenders. For a very small number of exceptionally talented artists, musicians, and researchers, we may find it useful to refer tapes/CDs, slides, and/or abstracts to the appropriate Yale academic department for evaluation.”

Do you fit in that group?

I think that unless you are an accomplished SATB operatic singer, you shouldn’t really send anything

Dude, that comment makes no sense. SATB operatic? You want him to be in the chorus at the Met? Choral singing and opera singing are two completely different forms of singing. SATB stands for soprano, alto, tenor, bass. Accomplished SATB operatic means pretty close to nothing. “SATB” isn’t an adjective. You wouldn’t call a physicist working at the LHC a Large Hadron physicist.

hmmm

i guess what i meant to say was unless you are an operatic singer and thus one who can be placed into a specific sub-category (namely soprano, mezzo soprano, contralto, etc), then there’s no point in sending in a recording.

i know that sometimes in amatuer choirs people have a very vague understanding of what type of singer they are and I also know that choir doesn’t necessarily = astounding voice.

soooo i hope that clears things up a bit.

well, taking everything into account, i am not submitting any extra stuff.

i visited Yale and I didn’t like it.

Granted I didn’t see the entire campus i was only in a certain part, but i wasn’t impressed. The buildings were pretty but they blended in with the rest of the city and inside the builds were old and paint was chipping.

The students there didn’t seem very impressive either, i thought they’d be more… intellectual

Am I crazy or was this just a bad first impression? Should I still apply?

^do us all a favor and apply to harvard instead

no need to be rude.

but i suppose we’re in agreement about the harvard thing

I rarely invoke my username, but are you serious? You just said you didn’t like it and then asked us if you should apply? I’m with eating food, do us a favor and don’t. You and your more …intellectual (whatever that means) friends can all go somewhere else. Seriously. Did you honestly just do that? Do you have any personality or judgement or anything?

how rude

i asked if maybe it was a bad first impression or if it was just unimpressive.

apparently the latter.

good day

hahaha ohhhh life

Add me to the list, I’m applying SCEA :D

I have a yale info session at a school near me next week…lol I’m coming face to face with my admissions officer! I’m scared.

^ ah! me too!

and me!! This is freaky, we’re actually applying now and now we get to meet the people that “control our future”?

ummm so now that i can officially talk about it:

yayay how many of us got national merit semi!?

oh my…everyone here is so amazing and hardcore. I really, really love yale…and NOT for the prestige factor like the normal applicant(and yes, I’d have heard of yale even if it wasn’t famous…I live 45 minutes away).

what kind of gpas do you all have…because when you say you’re unhappy with junior yr grades, is that one A- or 5 F’s?? I’m kind of insecure about my junior yr grades, because I got 1 B+ and one B…

2 B’s won’t keep you out of yale.

semi…yay
