Oh Good Grief - A "Jail and Bail" Event is Insensitive?

I’ve certainly been there, even if you have not.

In most cases, such as the satire of Mel Brooks or Monty Python, or some stand up comedy, satire is pretty evident, even if its a bad attempt. If the latter, I tend to chalk it up as a bad attempt, not a back-handed attempt to mock another group. Sometimes don’t you find yourself laughing out loud while thinking “I can’t believe I am laughing at this”?

Not that I can recall. It is usually pretty evident whether or not the person knows and respects what they are talking about. Half-assed satire usually reveals how little the person knows about the thing they are mocking, and that just usually makes it worse.

Well I found myself thinking that (“I can’t believe I am laughing”) when watching “Something about Mary” and “Book of Mormon”. Isnt really about “respect” unless you try and make it so, IMO. Apparently what humors one does not another. And so it goes.

While I live in a PC conscious area that ends up being more offensive (IMO) than if they weren’t so passive aggressive about it, I do admit that as a fairly sensitive sort, I didn’t even think Roadrunner was funny as a kid, let alone events that mock other groups or individuals.
I do think canceling a fundraiser if not mean spirited in nature, is overkill however.

Yes, EK, I agree about Roadrunner. I classify that in the " getting hurt isn’t funny" and having acme anvils fall on Wylie Coyote wasn’t funny.

Half-assed satire might simply mean the person is a lousy comedian, cosmicfish. Why jump to the assumption that it has some nefarious meaning about the person’s level of knowledge about the subject? Perhaps it might mean that, but don’t agree that it “usually reveals” their ignorance.

The Roadrunner cartoon is meant to satirize the Coyote’s many screwed up attempts to try capturing and eating the smaller and seemingly physically weaker Roadrunner.

It’s a variant of the seemingly small easy target turning the tables on a larger seemingly stronger aggressor. And unless my memory is faulty, Wile E. Coyote is the aggressor in these stories whether it’s with Roadrunner or Bugs Bunny when hubris is added for more comedic effect.

About to give a David and Goliath lecture??? Please don’t.

Bottom line, regardless of intent, it wasnt funny. And I dont consider it satire. JMO

Is “Catholic high school” really generally equivalent to “expensive private school”? Weird.

@cosmicfish‌

You need to keep things in context.

I said it was a Catholic school, located in Cummings Research Park, and that the parents are engineers, doctors, lawyers, etc. I also directly implied that at THIS particular school, affording $3 wouldn’t not be a problem. I was talking about a particular school.

I never said anything to suggest that Catholic schools = expensive private school.

Weird.

I’m actually more surprised you didn’t notice there was a strong David and Goliath theme running through the Roadrunner cartoons or those involving Wile E. Coyote and Bugs Bunny with the coyote being a particularly inept and overly proud Goliath…

One of my kids’ private schools did the pay-for-free-dress-day thing (including with the Tshirt sometimes), and I hate-hate-hated it because part of the reason I was paying for the school was to avoid free-dress issues, especially with my girls. This one school was an independent expensive-type private, and often kids would not participate in the free dress because either the kids simply forgot, or because it was almost a “thing” for uber-wealthy moms to appear to be too busy or preoccupied with whatever they do to take the time to attend to something that minor. I guess they needed to hire someone to monitor those type of fundraisers for them, or something.

In my teacher education program this semester, a guy in my cohort required his students to bring in an agenda book (costs $3!) so they could keep track of their homework. About half the class told him they had to wait until their parents got paid.

Never said a theme wasn’t apparent . Was just hoping to avoid yet another unnecessary history lecture. Please. No mas.

I wouldn’t be irritated by this particular situation if they just decided to change the theme, and continue on. They could have done that quietly, and nobody would notice, in fact they could have done that in the planning. Going public with a cancellation and all the PC talk is what is sickening.

By the way everyone, Merry Christmas. My husband is out there putting up Christmas lights, and we’re going to get a tree this weekend. And I’m an agnostic. What rebels we are, probably offending the entire community with our Christmas cheer.

Roadrunner was apparently patterned after Tom & Jerry, whose antics seemed much milder to me.
My favorite was probably Bugs Bunny, and I had a talking Bugs, that was almost as big as I was. :x
I can’t say I recall a specific cartoon featuring blackface, but I do have a vague memory of it, perhaps in Mickey Mouse?
<a href=“Is ‘Tom and Jerry’ Really Racist?”>http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/10/02/is-tom-and-jerry-really-racist.html</a></p>

I have never liked cartoons of any sort, so I’m offended and outraged that all of you have come on my thread to discuss them.

I am outraged that you are outraged. Not liking cartoons is like being against motherhood and apple pie. As snagglepuss of QuickDraw McGraw would say… “Exit, stage left”.

I’m almost afraid to post here, for fear of being mocked as “too sensitive.” I don’t actually think the “Jail and Bail” idea is a terrible idea, but the original post said that the prisoners would be dressed in orange prison garb. Yes that’s trendy, with OITNB everywhere, so the students would be doing a pretty corny fundraiser but with an edgy look.

I’m thinking of the photos of these events that appear everywhere on social media. There’s all kinds of ways that this well-intentioned event could be portrayed as a bunch of insensitive rich kids. The internet is flooded with images of sororities having “Mexican” parties, wearing “Illegal” tee shirts, sombreros and moustaches. There’s another gangsta party idea that I’ve seen around as well. I think those PRIVATE parties WERE shameful, but private, until the pics went up on the web.

So you’re doing something charitable, but you have to make it edgy ( heaven forbid you wear striped prisoner outfits, a la Monopoly or Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" at an extremely emotional time in this nation. Maybe you really don’t have to do that.

Well, as Porky Pig would say, "Uh duh dee uh duh dee uh duh dee… dat’s all folks!’ Sorry to be insensitive to cartoon haters. And of course, stutterers.

I guess the US is becoming liberally fundamentalist.
