Oh no not grade deflation again

I know I spend all my time on here trying to dispel the grade deflation notion…and now THIS

Don’t worry people, it isn’t that hard to get A’s at BU and the grade deflation reputation will give your GPA some credibility when you’re looking for jobs/applying to grad schools.

What is grade deflation? Is there a significant deflation at BU? Do they expect you to learn more or are the exams just harder?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/boston-university/911792-grade-deflation-bu.html

It’s a constant topic on here. Do some searches for it and you’ll come up with a lot of stuff. Some people say it exists, some say it doesn’t. But if BU’s got a rep for it, it can only help you. If grad schools or employers think BU has grade deflation, your grades will look better. That being said: THERE IS NO OFFICIAL GRADE DEFLATION POLICY at BU. Profs and departments decide their own grades. Eh, I could go on and on about this topic…but for me, I always felt like the grades I received were earned and not given. And that makes me proud.

As the creator of the thread BUBailey quoted, I think its my responsibility to tell you not to worry about grade deflation. After my first semester here I can honestly tell you that it is nowhere near as bad as I believed it to be. You will always get grades you deserve and an A is always given to those who know the material best.

I will say that after talking with my friends from high school, certain colleges tend to just give A’s so long as you attend the class and pay attention. Boston University isn’t the type of place where you can passively get A’s. It takes work to get a good gpa but it can absolutely be done. I can honestly tell you that I like the grading system they have here; you will feel good about the grades you get and BU will keep you on your toes.

Sometimes I’m jealous of those colleges like Brown or Tulane where the average gpa is always high: 3.5-3.8. As future employees and graduate schools do tend to look at your graduating gpa, its nice to be able to pull out a high number. But in BU, getting a 3.5 - 3.8 is considered quite impressive (the average gpa for CAS last year was 3.0). But like BUBailey and others have said, you will feel that you truly earned the gpa you received and that is something to be proud of.

Really, grade inflation at other schools is a bigger problem than grade deflation at BU will ever be.

I’ve known a lot of students who attended BU over the years and I always thought their grades had to do with the wide caliber of students they accepted, never considered grade deflation to be an issue at BU. I think an “A” student at Brown would be an “A” student at BU, but they would be at Brown not BU…

yay, GladKen, I’m glad you had a good experience!!! And ncmentor makes a good point too. It’s all relative, really. I just think it’s amusing that no one complains about grade deflation at law school or med school (where maybe 5 people in the class earn A’s). Work hard, go to office hours, study for your exams…you’ll get what’s coming to you.
