Ok, so I need some advice on what I should do about this situation I find myself in. This past summer I got a job working at a shoe store, and it was only meant to be a summer job, but I really enjoy working with my co-workers and I’ve grown to love the store.

I’ve done such a great job working there that my manager wanted to promote me to assistant manager, but I have Stanford to look forward to so there’s really no choice. Well, here’s the problem. My manager, the district manager, and even the owner of the company don’t want me to leave. They would really like for me to continue working-weekends only-during the school year.

I’ve been very hesitant about answering because I don’t want to miss out on the activities and experiences that may occur during college weekends. Also, I’m not sure how my parents will respond if I approach them with my new course of action. However, I do realize that due to the pay, I wouldn’t have to do workstudy, which would allow me more freetime during the week. Also, I could pay off my student contribution in a month and a half.

My job in Hayward, and I will be going to Stanford without a car so transportation might be an issue…but the idea of juggling classes and my weekend-only job seems feasible to me. I need some advice please!

Hmm… I think it may be doable. However, do you know how many hours per week you’d be expected to do for work-study and how many hours per week you’d be working at the shoe store? (I realize the shoe store will be weekends only, but 4 hours is a lot different from 16 hours.)

You probably won’t have activities every weekend, but there may be times when there’s something you want to do… how flexible will the shoe store be about times like these?

The transportation issue sounds like a serious one; I think that this logistical issue needs to be worked out if you are to even consider the job.

You might be able to have a car on campus if you have a job off-campus. What dorm are you in next year? Some of my friends who were in a dorm in Wilbur their freshman year just kept their cars in a neighborhood off-campus. Remember that work-study jobs on campus pay pretty well. I think most jobs start at at least $12/hour. What hours would you work each weekend? I don’t think it will be a big deal to miss out on being on campus during the day on weekends. Most of the fun usually happens in the evening anyway.

Thanks so much for replying back. I would be working the 8 hr. shift on Saturday - so either 9:30-6 or 1-9:30 and 11-7 on Sundays I presume. I’m going to have to look into that further. We go by a flat salary of $8/hr or 8% of one’s total sales, and all summer long I’ve been making my commission which is about $600 for the two week period.

The glitch in the situation is that I wont have a car on campus, but when I get back home I will…so it’s really just getting back into the city on Friday night.

Personally, I would recommend against having a job freshman year. But it depends a lot on your situation–specifically, how important the job is to you, your financial situation, and how flexible the job is.

How many hours a week would you need to work on campus to cover work study? Some campus jobs would allow you to get work done while on shift even. What do you see as the advantages and disadvantages of each option?

If you need to be there by 9:30 on Saturday, that will limit what your options are for Friday night. If you don’t get back until 10PM that might limit some options, although if partying is your thing most parties don’t start until about 10PM anyway. It also means that you wouldn’t be able to get work done Sunday, which is when a lot of students complete a good chunk of the studying they need to do for the week.
