O'Hare to UofChicago transportation

I need some suggestions for safe and reliable transportation to and from O’Hare airport to U of Chicago…my daughter will be traveling alone to visit friends and they seem to think the train/el/ combo will be fine …I am absolutely against this as she will be arriving fairly late at night and I do not think it is safe (and she has almost no experience navigating public transportation). I would like to set up some type of pick up service for her (to ease my own mind if nothing else!)…any suggestions???
Thanks!

How late will your D arrive at ORD?

If it is before 10pm she could take an airport shuttle (eg. GO Airport Express Shuttle) to the Hyatt McCormick Place Hotel and have her friends meet her in the hotel lobby …. she/they can take the CTA down to Hyde Park or she can take a taxi from the hotel to Hyde Park.

She could take the airport shuttle to any down town hotel but the Hyatt McCormick Place is 20 or so blocks south of down town and that much closer to the Hyde Park ( U of C) area.

I have not personally used this company but I believe they also offer door to door service.

OP, I agree with you that navigating public transportation for a person new to a big city is never a good idea, even in the day time.

DS once took a local pubic transportation in another city directly from the airport to a school (which is located in an area nicer than southern Chicago). He said he did not feel very comfortable just because of the time he took it. He felt perfectly fine when he took the train from that school to the airport in the day time on his return trip.

Can she take an earlier flight? It is never a good idea to take a flight that arrives late for a trip to an unfamiliar city.

I agree that the airport shuttle is probably her best option at night. I would suggest a taxi from the hotel directly to her friends’ door. With the internet, it is relatively easy to figure out how to navigate public transportation in advance, but that doesn’t mean it is a good idea to take transit alone at night. My D lives in Chicago without a car, and she has no problem getting around on the el … but she takes a cab at night. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

The easiest thing is to just take a taxi. Here is what uchicago says

[Maps & Transportation | Visiting the University | The University of Chicago](http://visit.uchicago.edu/transportation.shtml)

The UChicago link to transportation lists the Omega Shuttle to take you to/from the airport.

Another service, Airport Express, can go all the way to the U of C.

It is pretty safe to take the L from O’Hare to Downtown. But, a newbie should NOT take it farther south. You get into some pretty rough neighborhoods. Best to catch a cab from downtown to the U of C. There are buses you can catch downtown to the U of C, but, don’t get off too early, or miss your stop (again, rough neighborhoods).

If you want a Cab all the way from O’hare to the U of C, then use a limo service, like A1 Limo:

If you want a Cab (from either the Airport or Downtown), then Flash Cab is the way to go.

As a former U of C grad student who WAS familiar with negotiating public transportation, I fully agree with the above: take some kind of shuttle/cab combo.

We have used flashcab and Airport express. The el is not convenient to u chicago

My D is in school in Chicago. I have priced the door to door shuttles and believe that Go Airport shuttle is the least expensive.
